Stage 4 Sam Takes Pictures!!!!!!!!!!! (Pics)

Hello you guys!!!!! My Blc. Campobello 'Mendenhall' Bloomed on New Years Day! But wasnt Fully open till today. So these pics are Hot off The camera so to speak. I finnaly bloomed an orchid on my own!!! Later To day im going to make a photo diary and post it on the gallery so you all have got to take a look see okay! It will have photos from when bud development was first noticed till right now. it was amazing i just woke up and i had this feeling that today was the day and i went over and BAM there it was... Opening. All my friends are coming over to see it!!!! The fragance is Not detectable yet. I guess i have to wait for the flower to fully open and mature. just today it was fully open so i sniffed and its building the fragrance as we speak. so Enough with the monologing and Here are those pics!!!!!!!!! what i love about this forum is that its the only place i can go besides the nursurey and find people who love the plants just as much as i do!

its funny because under the flourescent lights they look green which they are but the true color is A soft yellow

Way to go Sam! Beautifull flower. I still remember the first bloom that I could take full credit for. It was a great feeling. Keep up the good work!

Well, I hope I am still welcome after my crabby "can't come" response before. I apologize...I know I was being short. I was just so frustrated with DH's response when I asked him about this and I guess I just let it out here. As he reminded me...we are suppose to take a week's vacation in late August and that would eat up funds (air fare, hotels, car rental, dog sitter, etc.) and thinking we might not be able to afford to do that and the IU4. Plus we have the wedding coming up with all the plans and expenses that come with it. Then there is DH taking time from work and finding a sitter for Scout is always a problem. In the past, my sister has stayed here with Scout & mom whenever we go away, but mom is getting so bad now. Paul reminded me what a wreck I was just being away for a long week-end, thinking of my mom. Frankly, I dont know if I can even take the week we are suppose to take. I know I will worry about mom the whole time IÂm gone. Anyway, he presented so many problems to me that I didn't see any way to make it work. I just donÂt feel comfortable with mom being home alone for any length of time anymore. I just had a call last week from the Red Cross saying mom pressed her emergency button and they couldnÂt reach her. I couldnÂt either. After I raced over there in a pair of old sweats, no socks,no underwear (LOL...maybe thatÂs too personal) no face wash, no teeth brushing and of course, forgetting my keys to her place. Heart pounding, head pounding. Ringing the doorbell over and over, pounding on the doors....thought I would have to have the police break down the door because it would take up too much time for me to race back home and get my keys and come back again. Finally, I thought to go to her bedroom window and pound on it and *relief* she finally came to the door. She was fine, she just didnÂt *hear* anything and didnÂt remember pressing her emergency button! I was a wreck, to say the least. She is starting to tell me things that make *no sense*! In my heart I know she probably would be better off if she were somewhere where she could be monitored 24/7, but IÂm just not ready to push mom in to giving up her freedom and my sister is in as much denial as I am. But I worry about her all the time when I am not with her and I canÂt be with her 24/7. Anyway, IÂm losing my train of thought. I was thinking (though a bit ashamed of myself for thinking it) that if DH stayed home, he could sit Scout and check on my mom and if I got this job at the library, maybe I could afford the extra trip. And, just wanted to say, *if* I can somehow work it out I hope you guys will forget my rash/rude answer here earlier. I know you guys are sweethearts and arenÂt going to say anything publicly to hurt or embarrass me, so you can always email me. I know things are a little strained with me...IÂm in a funk and a little stressed out (probably of my own making) and get the feeling that maybe others are too? Your house indeed is an architectural wonder be sure to enjoy it! My opinion? There is a movement in America that seems to be picking up steam when it comes to building houses that asks us to think beyond size and more towards the way we actually live. If five years from now you are having any doubts you might want to read one of Sarah Susanka's books which has inspired millions of new home builders and renovators. Your house is quite oversized for my taste, but again that's just my taste. I don't know a damned thing about you, your family or your lifestyle and it is not my place to judge. Personally though I wouldn't know what to do with all that space. I compliment you however on how well you and your architects still kept focus on all the details that truly make a house a home- regardless of size. In the day of starter castles, McMansions, and mini- Taj Mahal's its nice to know that some people understand that its the details that count not just quantity. If you could find a way to build a house that truly reflects the way YOU live and it requires 8000 sq feet of living space then more power to you! When I saw the title my answer was going to be the floor and then the backsplash. But reading the other posts I need to add the layout was tough and changed several times. I was doing this myself and then getting feedback from the GC eventually when we finally settled on one. Picking the GC was tough too since you are putting a lot of faith into that decision and a big part of how things go is in their hands. Honestly I don't think there is an easy stage during something like this. The easiest for me was the countertop. Once I saw the Cambria Canterbury I was in love. I tried to take it one step/one decision at a time. It was still hard and I don't want to make another decision of any significance for a long, long time. I was surprised the flooring was the hardest part but there are so many options between type of flooring and then the color/pattern on top of that. So far I am happy with everything. The tile for the backsplash is sitting waiting for the GC to install this - hopefully next week. I had the tile narrowed down to 2 because I couldn't take looking anymore. The designer where I got the Cambria came over to see how it turned out and I asked her opnion on the 2 tile options and went with her choice. Window treatment goes in today but counter stools are delayed until the 23rd. I'm drained!

Love the pictures! I would love to have a party for my Lhaso but she does not like other animals. Very jealous. She even tries to chase them when they are on television. A few years ago Wal-Mart had an actual dog birthday cake in the pet section. We got one for Sandy and she loved it. Can't find them anymore.

UHHHHH?!1?! Ill have to get back to you on that one Pat (Lol)!!!!!!!!!!!! the second bud turned backwards and got stuck while it tried to open last night while i was sleeping. Its so funny because it showed no signs of opening at all and then i look at it this morning and it was opening but it was stuck on the leaf, hahahha such a clumsy bud. so i pitched the bud upwards and taped it and it now i fully open. the second buds always open faster it seems.

Oh and its emiting fragrance now!!!!! its not one of those that you can smell far away but when you do smell it boy do you smell it! it is spicy sweet and somewhat like a mix between a gardenia and a rose with some citrus background! it is really good to me at least. the flower when it first opens is bright green and thats why they look so green under the lights. but its now more the color of the second pic. i saw some pics of this flower that didn't have the red patch but mine do and that is one of the traits that drew me to buying this plant. the flowers are about 4 1/2 inches across which is just shy of the said 5 inch spread. i am so happy that i just went crazy with pictures! get this i took at least 95 pics starting from when the sepals started to split till they opened. So look for the album at the gallery most likely 2 morrow. Thanks!!!!!!!

Congratulations and good growing Sam! Your bloom will continue to grow for another day or two so may reach the suggested 5" yet.

Did you ever track down your Chia Lin? Those blooms will scent your entire room and even your brother will be able to enjoy them (in the closet). LOL

Just beautiful, Sam. I can see why it has an award. It got to Stage 4 a lot faster than I expected, but you have good intuition, since you knew that it was about ready to open.

Very nice photographs, too. I especially like the sideways ones-- show the gracefulness of the flower.

Looking forward to seeing the photo album on opening over at the gallery. It will be a classic, I'm sure.

yeah i did At odoms And At kawamoto orchids ill be picking it up in spring!!!! i cannot wait!!!! ahh its nice to have success!!!!!

What an awesome flower. It's really beautiful-great job! Pretty cool when you can grow something this beautiful and your located in the Northern half of the country.

Did you have this plant outside over the summer?

Thanks Mehitabel!!!! Really!!!!a ton!!!!! T-bred ive been growing it for 2 years almost! it seems like just yesterday i got it in the mail. Uhh ive been growing it outside untill winter came,so its been overwintering on my dresser underlights, and i let it sit out there in a south window on my porch along with all my others. this blooming plant was actually A division of the original plant. the pot was so crowded that the plant started to decline. i was so scared to divide it but it all turned out amazing! this is the smaller portion of the division. as we speak its making roots. i just hope it does not exhaust itself. but it will have plenty of time to rest after. i like to give it a month or two rest when its done blooming like my book says to. so kepp your eyes out for that album im gathering the photos now. Calvin I love green orchids too!!!!!! there is just something about them that you just dont see everyday ao when you see it its like really they come in green toooo! (LoL) Im crazy about this plant!!!

Hey, Sam. Double, triple, quadruple good growing!

I am impressed that this plant is a division you made two years ago, and you've got it blooming.

Really good work there. Excellent. You should be very proud of yourself. I sure would be!

What book are you using to go by in taking care of your catts?

Thanks mehitabel it is um... Orthos All About Orchids! its a really great book. In fact its my first ever orchid book. it a real life saver!!!!! it breaks down beginner level orchids to intermediate level orchids to the advanced level orchids! this book is what got me hooked on cattleyas. i really love the book!!!! this plant was the last plant that i thought would bloom, out of the two divisions it is the smallest with 6 growths. the other which is the bigger of the two is on its way to becoming a small specimen plant with three leads. if anything i thought that would be the one to bloom. im so happy!!

Hey, Sam. I agree entirely. That's a very good books to work and study from.

And it took you from choosing your orchids to dividing, to getting the smallest division to bloom. Really good work.

Don't forget your promise to post your photos on the gallery. I'm looking forward to seeing them.
