I just started "Lance Armstrong Its Not About The Bike". I've read about 35 pages and think it's going to be good. Supposed to be very inspirational. It's our book club book for April.

Just finished "Ghost Dancer" by John Case.....he's written 6 and this is the 5th one I've read. It was boring for the first half but glad I stuck with it because the 2nd half was good. I'll have to get his other one next (I say "he" but it's actually a pseudonym for a husband-wife writing team).

Before that I read "The Little Giant of Aberdeen County", I enjoyed it.

I also read "This Much is True" by a local author (not to be confused with "I Know This Much is True" by Wally Lamb). It was horrible, I don't know how it got published.

I've got 2 from the library to read now, "Shanghai Girls" and "The Help". I've heard that they are both good.

I'm reading "The Story of Edgar Sawtelle." It's a very good book. Dog-lovers especially would enjoy it, but it's not just about dogs. Longish, but the story carries you along quite well.

I want to read both of those, Casey--The Help and Shanghai Girls.

I'm a dog lover but wan't that crazy about The Story of Edgar Sawtelle. Thought it was just okay but I know lots of people loved it. Did like Shanghai Girls and Devil in the White City. Our Book Club is reviewing Olive Kitteridge on Monday. I read it about six months ago...hope I can remember it. I do know I enjoyed it. Also read Sarah's Key...very, very good.

I just returned to the library "Devil in the White City", "The Bell Jar," and "Wish You Well." I am almost finished with "The Likeness." I checked out "Atonement",
"Enduring Love", "The Time Traveler's Wife" and "Alex Cross's Trial." Y'all read any of those? The concept of time travel has never piqued my interest, but this was highly recommended and I'm going to give it a try.

I'm just finishing up Plum Spooky by Evanovich...couldn't get the start of her other Stephanie Plum series so I thought this would give me an idea of what to expect...it's been a great read!! I've also got a "Michael Bennett" book "Run for your life" by Patterson and Sunday's At Tiffany's...

I'm trying to get through "Inside of a Dog".

Someone recommended the author Elizabeth Berg, so I started reading something she published in 2009, "Home Safe". Gah! Back to the library with this. I pushed on to Chapter Eight and knew exactly where it would go. (Skipped along through the end and was proven correct.)

Is this a singular clunker? (An author can have a bad book once in a while.) This reads like "Ladies' Home Journal" fiction from the 1950's.

I finally finished all 1474 pages of "A Suitable Boy" by Vikram Seth, "The Girl With the Dragon Tatoo" & "The Girl Who Played With Fire" by Stieg Larsson, "House Rules" by Jodi Picoult, "The Ruins" by Scott Smith, "The Shadow of Your Smile" by Mary Higgins Clark, "Big Jack" by J.D. Robb. Since I've been on bed rest with my back I know I've read a lot more, just can't remember them right now!

Vannie, good luck with Atonement. I tried reading it several times but was unsuccessful. I found it very confusing and very dark. After seeing the movie I felt vindicated. You had to pay close attention to following the movie also. I did enjoy McEwans Saturday. I would enjoy reading your take on Atonement.

I just finished "Cameo Lake" by Susan Wilson, I really enjoyed it. And... "Water for Elephants" That was good also.

"The Help" can be read in one day. I could not put it down.

I am half way through Run by Ann Patchett and I am really enjoying it. She also wrote Bel Canto, which I hope to read next.
Between novels I am reading Great Bridge, an epic story of the building of the Brooklyn Bridge by David McCullouch.
It is extremely interesting but not easy reading.
We are going to NYC in July so I find it particularly interesting. Love the engineering side and the political side, too.

I'm reading Spooner by Pete Dexter. It is about a little boy growing up in the South. Love it so far.

Georgysmom, I tried reading Atonement when it was on the best seller list and didn't get too far. I'm going to give it another try, but I'm not going too far into it if I can't get interested. I read half of "Fine Balance" and half of "Wolf Hall" and thought they were both awful and couldn't understand why they had been on the best seller list so long. So, I'll be approaching "Atonement" half heartedly. I think a lot of books would be just great condensed.

Vannie, More power to you. Atonement was probably the only book I've ever started and didn't finish no matter how bad it was. I just didn't have the patience and decided there are too many other books that are really good, to bother struggling through reading this one. I understood my confusion once I saw the movie because he kept bouncing back and forth between the now and the past .

I couldn't read Atonement either. Just couldn't get into it.

Finished my paperback of "Taken" which is really a synopsis of the TV Series which has been playing on the SciFi channel at 2 am my time. Two more episodes to go . loved that series when it was on a couple of years ago
A gal on another board is rereading Alas Bablylon so I got my copy out and will join her.

This is not a book that I am currently reading, but one of my all time favorites. And it is an older book too.

It is an awesome book, if you get a chance, read it. It is a tear jerker, and really takes a hard look at someone battling cancer.

Just finished The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin. Story of her search for more happiness in her life in one year's time. She divided the year into certain sections to concentrate on certain things. It was pretty good.

Interestingly enough she chose to declutter her house and her life as the first task to make her more content and then ready to change other factors more readily.

I've got The Help coming from Paperback Swap.

Just finished The Help...wish it had been longer....to see where some of the other characters ended up...But enjoyed it...anyone else who read it feel that way?...Mary

This present darkness and Piercing the darkness, by Frank Peretti. Excellent Christian fiction. Riveting!

I've heard good things about "The Help"!

I put aside the latest biography of Ayn Rand and also Joan Didion's Miami in order to read some fiction.

So I am reading The First Man in Rome, by Colleen Mccullough. It's the first book of her Masters of Rome series. I love it! Not only is her research fantastic, but she is also witty. She describes major events in this period of Roman history but basically this is historical fiction. Since these books are l-o-n-g, and I am not a fast reader, I'll still be reporting on them next year...

momof6, I too wish The Help gets a sequel of some kind, I became attached to the characters, this was my best book of last year. It spoiled me in finding other books to read, nothing else grips me.

I'm almost at the end of House Rules and enjoyed it immensely though. Jodi Picoult has a lot of depth when she's dealing with odd diseases and conditions.

Just finished The Art of Racing in the Rain and Sarah's Key.

Am currently reading One Thousand White Women.

I loved "The Help" and I also could not read "Atonement" (I thought the movie was far better). I'm reading "The Girl that played with Fire" and it's okay, but I also have "Half Broke Horses" by Jeannette Walls (waiting in my stack) who wrote "The Glass Castle" (one of my favorites). I'll wait until I read the first 100 pages first. That's my rule, I have to read at least 100 pages and if the book doesn't move me or grab me by that time I can go on to another or skip it altogether. lol

There are so many great books on the spring/summer horizon!! Amazon sends me emails on the latest books being released and they sure look good!

Have read several of the books mentioned here. Love Mystery and/or Detective Novels. Right now am reading "Murder Shoots the Bull" by Anne George. It's a "Southern Sisters Mystery" I swear you'd think these two were regulars here at the KT!! The two sisters are in their 60's and are a real hoot!!

I finished The Help a couple of weeks ago for our April book club meeting and last week read The Glass Castle which is our May book club selection. I've also read Half Broke Horses which is the second novel of the author of The Glass Castle, Jeannette Walls. Of the two books, I enjoyed Half Broke Horses more. I hated that it ended. Another book that I read in between and is non-fiction was Escape (I can't remember the authors name) but it's a very haunting and upsetting true story to me but I won't get into the main subject here for fear of dicing someone else's culture or life.

Aunt Audrey, I've read all of Anne George's books and throughly enjoyed each one. They're very entertaining and great light reading. She was from Birmingham and sadly she passed away a few years ago during heart surgery. Many of the places that she mentioned in her books, I recognized, so I felt a real connection.

I've been trying to find enought time to read anything at all. I would love to find the time to get into the Louise Erdrich books...starting with Love Medicine. I read a few pages and put it right back down...so much other stuff going on.

I recently finished The Help. I loved it. I do wish it was a bit longer. I wish she would have told us a little more about what happened next in the characters' lives. Otherwise, it is the best book I've read in quite awhile.

I also read Saving CeeCee Honeycutt recently. It was very good.... it's also a southern novel, with a few elements similar to The Help.

I'm currently reading Shakespeare's Landlord by Charlaine Harris.
