I'm not reading.........I'm too busy buying reading glasses in various strengths, hoping to find one that will enable me to read comfortably. :-)

Test them out in the store! My eye doc told me to go to $ Tree and buy them for $1. a pair in 2.75 strength. I bet there are 30 pair around here.

I have not been reading much since I had company for a while but still working on Relentless right now.

alisande, why not just get your eyes examined and get the real thing that works. Reading glasses are just single vision and won't even cost that much, (more then $ tree) but then you will have a good pair. I have a pair for just the computer and they are great.

DH and I are reading (listening to) "The Replacement", by Brenna Yovanoff. Weird and yucky, about children being stolen from their beds and being replaced by "others".

I am actually reading, "Before You Know Kindness", by Chris Bohjalian.

Currently reading "Hell's Corner) by David Baldacci. Very good book; one of the "Camel Club" series.

Vannie, You Know When the Men are Gone was my choice for last month's book club meeting. I didn't really care for it and wasn't looking forward to hosting the meeting and the impending discussion. Since I was the hostess, I was out of the room for much of the discussion getting dinner ready, etc. but I could hear a very lively conversation going on which continued on during dinner, when normally the conversation turns to boss hate talk and upcoming vacations. At the end of the evening everyone agreed, it was one of their favorites. I still haven't figured out why. :-)

I'm not far enough into The Poisoner's Handbook to give an opinion. It's non-fiction which is not my favorite genre so am having a tough time picking it up. I'll give a report next month.

"Ahab's Wife or, The Star Gazer". I like it, halfway through, over 600 pages which is pretty long for me.

Since previously seeing here on the KT so many rave reviews of Lisa Gardner's books, I downloaded Alone to my Kindle. Loved it, so then I downloaded and read Hide, which was also really good. I've now read all five of the books in her "Detective D.D. Warren" series, and I'm on the last of the six in the "FBI Profiler" series - Say Goodbye.

Next on my list to finish reading is Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption by Laura Hillenbrand. It's on my Kindle and I've read the first four chapters.

Lindsey, I read Unbroken about a month ago and LOVED it. What an amazing story of amazing men.

I'm just starting Cutting for Stone, Abraham Verghese.

I recently purchased, The Story of Charlotte's Web, by Micheal Sims. It's the story of E.B. White and his writing of the classic.

I downloaded "The Hunger Games" to my Kindle this morning. There are two more books after it, I hope I like the first one.

Just finshed reading, "The Company She Keeps" by Georgia Durante. Supposed to be a true story about the author. Not sure how much of it is true, and how much of it is exageration. Oh, and she's very full of herself......

"You're Not Sick, You're Thirsty" by Dr. Batmanghelidj, M.D.. Interesting although it is somewhat technical. Made me add up how much I was drinking on a daily basis... way more than you could imagine.

Annie Barrows' delightful book Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. It is set on the island in (post?) WWII and is written as letters sent back and forth.

Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers.. love her books...

Just finished the Hunger Games trilogy. My daughter loved the first book. I can't say I loved it, but I had to keep reading to find out what would happen next. I am on the second in the Outlander series Dragonfly in Amber.

Just finished the audio book The Secret Holocaust Diaries by Nonna Bannister.

Next I will read Firefly Lane by Kristin Hannah.

I loved the Guernsey Literary.... and Major Pettigrew's Last Stand. I am just finishing Rennie Airth's River of Darkness. Set in post WWI England and the central character is on the trail of a serial killer.

Water for Elephants....a little late... I know...but I just bought it for a dollar off Craig's list.

I haven't been reading much lately but did read Major Pettigrew's Last
Stand when we were in Florida in March. I loved it and am glad to hear you're enjoying it, too. Think I will recommend it to my book club next time around.

Beeohio...I enjoyed Firefly Lane and hope you do too. I remember reading here that someone who read it didn't like it.

I also enjoyed Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. In fact, I was just thinking about it today. My daughter and I were talking about 64 Charing Cross (or is it 34?). I gave it to her for Christmas and she just read it and was saying how much she liked it. It was similar to Guernsey Lit in that it was a series of correspondence back and forth during WW !!.

I really must get back to reading but I need to get my house in order first.

This was published in 1948, and contains colorful articles about many places and happenings in our state. I'm enjoying it.

I just finished reading Water For Elephants. Excellent
Also just finished A Dog's Purpose for my book group. It was just OK for me. Found it too be a little too schmaltzy. But anthropomorphism isn't really my cup of tea. Easy read, don't understand the rave reviews.
I'm currently reading Brazen Virtue by Nora Roberts and Soul On Bikes by Tobie Gene Livingston who was the founder/president (and still is) of the East Bay Dragons motorcycle club in Oakland,Ca.

Thanks to those who made suggestions about reading glasses. I'm still adjusting to my post-cataract surgery vision, and that may take awhile longer. I haven't quite zeroed in yet as to what strength I need for reading....sewing....rug hooking, etc.

When I envisioned needing reading glasses, I imagined myself sitting in a chair, reaching for my book and glasses. It never occurred to me how many times during the day we need to read something--a label, an address, Caller ID, etc. Nor did I realize how many pairs of reading glasses I'd need! Live and learn.....

One good thing is that following the surgery I no longer need $400 glasses, so I guess I can afford a few pair from the drugstore or dollar store. I just ordered two pair from Amazon. We shall see (maybe). LOL

I would stay away from the dollar store. They use to be pretty good but are so flimsy now and break very easily. If you have a Tuesday Morning near you, I got two pair of Ellen Tracy glasses for something like $12.99. They're pretty, very sturdy and came with a nice case. Also bought some at Big Lots, (they're Foster Grant and usually sell for around $19 - $24 and they were $3 - $5) because like you said, you need them everywhere. I have a pair in the kitchen, a pair by my chair in the great room, a pair by my bedside, a pair in my car and a pair in my purse.

I'm reading Anne Tyler's Patchwork Planet. Hadn't read anything of hers for a while, and am enjoying it.

Thanks, Georgysmom. I'll follow your advice. Wish we had a Tuesday morning here, but not yet. I'll check out Big Lots, though, and I'm curious to see what the Amazon purchases will be like. One is from Dr. Dean Edell, and the other is from American Readers, or something like that.

Alisande, funny how you're elated you can now buy drugstore brand reading glasses, yet I'm elated I finally bought 'real' glasses that are bifocals. I only need reading glasses. But like you said, it's amazing how often we need to read something. I was so sick and tired of flipping my drugstore brand glasses off and on my face, forgetting where I left them, ripping the hair off my head every time I removed them from my hair, that I went to an actual store that sells 'real' glasses and got myself two pair of bifocal reading glasses. Now I can see distance no problem, and I can read no problem. I do still use cheap drugstore glasses when I'm at home on my laptop or reading my Kindle. The entire lens is made for reading which makes it easier. But when I'm out of the house, driving, at work, shopping, etc., I wear my 'real' glasses.
The trick to knowing which strength you'll need it to try them on at the store and read the chart that's attached to the display. Or grab a magazine from the magazine rack and see which strength makes the page the clearest. And stick with that one strength.

I just finished 2 non-ficton books.
" The invisible Wall: a barrier breaking love story" by Harry Bernstein. I read his obit. last week and this book sounded interesting. (It was) Mr. Bernstein began writing it when he was 91- finished it when he ws 96. It was published in 2007. Sort of an "Angela's Ashes" story, but better written. His memoir of growing up in a mill town in England before WW1. The "invisible wall" ran down the middle of his street, the Christians on one side and the Jews on the other.

The Rape of Nanking: the forgotten Holocaust of WW2" by Iris Chang. Very well written and documented. Easy to read, however NOT a light read!

I recently finished Jean Auel's "The Land of Painted Caves", the final book in the Earth's Children series. It was very good, I hated for it to end, knowing it was the last one ever.

Right now, I'm reading by "Damage Control" by J.A.Jance and Woody is reading "Dead Reckoning", the newest Sookie book by Charlaine Harris. We're both liking what we're reading.

Right now I am reading The Girl Who Played With Fire. I was slow to get to this series but, once I got into Dargon Tattoo, I was hooked.

Not enthralled with it but I'm reading Pete Hamill's "Tabloid". It's more interesting to anyone who ever worked for a newspaper. Can't remember which of these of his his I liked, but I think I read "North River" and "Forever". WHY don't I keep a log?

DH has brought home from our library the last season of "Mad Men", so we'll be watching that for our teatime matinee. Just finished a good Brit TV series "Identity" -- about a division in Scotland Yard that tackles stolen identity crime.

Janet Evanovich - I am on the 5th one in the series. I think # 17 comes out next week , so I am really behind !

The Potato Factory - Bryce Courtenay (been out a few years and just discovered in the library reject pile)

House of Spirits and Whispers - Annie Wilder . This is the true story of a haunted house. Is it scary...no, but as I love old houses and things that go bump in the night I liked it for a change of pace.

Alone in the classroom - Elizabeth Hay. Half way done and am liking it well enough but wonder about all the hype.
