Can you train a cat to stop yowling?

She is making the house miserable. She starts this in the morning and often wakes the toddler, who then has a lousy day because she's tired, and the whole household is miserable. This cat will even go seek out the crib and yowl next to it, as if she wants to wake the baby. She is the kind of cat that craves attention- yowling by the crib is a sure way to get it and I think she's learned that.

She is hyperthyroid, but is controlled with meds. She also has kidney disease, but that is also well controlled. She has always had an intense personality and seeks out attention, but it has gotten much worse lately. She goes to the vet tomorrow for a routine evaluation, but if everything looks well controlled from a health standpoint, how do I deal with the yowling? She is honestly driving me nuts at this point. I think we have encouraged the behavior by trying to feed her, or letting her outside, or picking her up- all positive attention- in our efforts to keep her quiet (and let the baby sleep). I'm not sure how to go about breaking the habit that we apparently helped start.

Any ideas before we all go insane?

Did it start when she became hyper-t? You are right in that she actually trained you to respond to her yowling. As far as she is concerned, her commands worked, so why stop?

The obvious answer is to un-train her by not responding to her vocalization, even if it means isolating her at night in an area where your toddler can't hear her,if possible. Can you close the door to the baby's room?

From what I've read, cats generally do not advertise that they feel chronic discomfort, but be sure (of course) to ask your vet if she may be dehydrated from her kidney problem...could be thirst. Do you give her sub-q fluids?

Your cat is howling for a reason, probably a medical reason. It is possible that you have encouraged even more howling by rewarding the behavior, but the howling itself is almost certainly based in something medical. This comes from Tanya's Chronic Renal Failure Information website linked below, "Howling (Particularly at Night)
This is sometimes the result of toxin levels in the blood. However, it may also have other causes such as deafness, hyperactive thyroid, high blood pressure or occasionally just old age and possibly cognitive dysfunction (senility). Certain medications such as periactin (Cyproheptadine), an appetite stimulant, or anabolic steroids, such as stanazole (Winstrol), can make a cat become vocal."

You can't "train" a medical symptom out of a cat. You might want to consider closing your toddler's door and using a baby monitor to check on her.

A shallow grave was not uncommon when hand dug by one individual on private property, especially in winter. Vaults were not common either. There are cemeteries in southern Illinois containing graves without vaults. Sometimes this is evidenced by a significant depression over the grave. For example, I had a grade school friend who was hired to mow a cemetery one summer in the 1940s. He was merrily making his way across the landscape with the mower when he and the mower sunk into a grave. Now, this young man was on the superstitious side and he thought for sure that the dead was about to grab him. He scrambled from the hole and ran from the cemetery. It is only in the last 60 years that some of these communities have passsed ordinances requiring burial vaults. Before that, it was the family's choice. A number of families short of funds buried without vaults; Some did it for personal belief reasons: There is a passage in the bible when paraphrased reads: You are made from dust and to dust you shall return. The reasoning is: Why prolong something that is going to happen anyway. Without vaults, wood caskets eventually decay and collaspe. Sometimes, a collasped grave makes a void under the surface and is not apparent until someone steps on it. It is dangerous to the grounds keeper and to anyone strolling the cmemtery. A vault requirement has become commonplace to protect from this hazard. Your theory of murder of Dear Addy is very plausible, but consider other possibilities: 1. Addy keeled over from heart attack. The shocked husband did not know what to do and buried her just as she fell. He surmised that he would be under suspicion. She would have been fully clothed and with shoes. Embalming is not necessary if the body is buried within 3 days after death. In early America, embalming was a luxury and not commonly done. It became popular during the Civil War because it was necessary to preserve the body for a week or more to allow time to ship the body and for relatives to gather for the funeral. Many soldiers were buried on or neaby the battlefield where they fell - some in mass graves. These bodies were not emblamed. 2. Addy died by an accident. 3. Addy committed suicide. Such an event would have been hush-hush. The 6 yr old: I know it was possible to put a 6 yr old on the train and semd her from Denver to Chicago. I myself would have not done this. I would have required an adult escort. I guessing she was put in charge of the Conductor who would have seen to it that she got off at the right stop and to answer her questions. Passenger service was much more personal in those days. But if i had been that little girl, I'd been very afraid. I would not have sent her alone on such a trip. There are too many things that could go wrong. Maybe her birthdate is in error and she was older than 6. An Aside: In my family search, I found an ancestor who died during a harsh winter. The ground was frozen deeply and the cemetery crew was not able to dig a proper grave on time. (They did not have bull dozers, back hoes, or nimble tractors back then. In frozen ground, graves were dug by pick and shovel.) A wake and funeral was celebrated on scheduled. The casket and body was put outside to freeze. The "stiff" was left frozen until the grave could be deepened. He was interred about 2 weeks after the funeral.

4 indoor/outdoor cats in this house. The only place food is available is INSIDE. And a human has to open the door to access it. I know it's not going to make your lives easier, but I'd keep the flap "buttoned up" when you're not there to monitor who is "chowing down". I've read some pretty funny stories about wildlife that has shown up a the feed trough at odd hours. My own experience has been that they've brought in live prey items... lol, I found a fully viable Chippie on a pile of laundry some weeks ago, have also dealt with a Blue Jay, a snake, and a vole. Took me 2 hrs. to convince Chippie to go back outdoors. We feed in the morning, and let them out if they want to go out. When I get home about 2PM they have the option of another snack but rarely avail themselves of it. By 5-7PM they're hungry. When they come in for dinner, they're in for the night. Generally speaking, you can predict their return. Cats are smart and you can train them. The only thing that is sort of tough here is the changing the clocks... but within a day, they're on to the next schedule. I don't mind being a "doorman". In the long term, it's just easier.

Did your vet check for giardia? It's known for foul-smelling wind (and extremely toxic runny poo). I'll add my vote for a little yoghurt from time to time. But please make sure that it is not one of the varieties that is thickened artificially with corn gluten, corn starch, or other plant based starches. Those using gelatine as a thickener are acceptable. I always have plain Greek yoghurt on hand. It is made of milk and culture with no grain thickeners nor gelatine (the very thought of gelatine makes me cringe) and is very good. I eat a spoonful, one of the cats gets a spoonful, I eat another spoonful, another cat gets a spoonful, and so forth until all cats have had their spoonful. You can also purchase probiotics at the market, most are acidophilus although others exist. A quarter to half probiotic tablet once or twice weekly should do the trick. IF this works but you find that you need to feed the probiotics forever and ever, you might wish to find out why the cat's flora are always off. You may also need to consider getting your cat off of grain-based foods. Cats did not evolve to eat grains, which feeding can lead to serious chronic health issues later. Spend a little more to get your cat onto grain-free foods. I did this with my youngest male Fionn, whose emanations would make the angels faint, they were so bad and far-reaching. He still had the gusty wind, even with the grain-free dry food. So I stopped feeding him dry food altogether. He's no longer windy. None of my other cats are flatulent after eating dry foods so this was a surprise. I no longer feed dry, but do keep Natural Balance Limited Ingredient Duck & Pea on hand. It makes a much healthier treat than do commercial cat treats (which are made up of corn, wheat and soy with a little animal fat added for flavour). The Natural Balance tinned foods are good-I feed only the Limited Ingredient tinned. Your Science Diet is a grain based food. Reading labels helps. They're too tiny to easily read while at market, so check the below referenced link-it's a commercial pet food and supply company, but they have label information on all the foods they carry and it's much easier to read them on the pc monitor. Oh, and cats can gulp air while eating too. Slowing their eating helps. Some say to put a tennis ball on the food so your cat must work out each piece from under the ball. When I tried that the cat just pipped the ball out with its paw and hoovered up his food, business as usual. Feeding wet food slows the eating too. You can also mix water with your cat's food so he must lap it up instead of inhaling it in. Sorry this is so verbose. I'm throwing a lot of ideas out in case one might be helpful. Wow I think you're doing great if at 3 weeks they are integrated and if the fights are small! 3 weeks is not so long in the cat universe. Somethings I learned from my own trouble maker cat - after he went missing for 6 wks after I got him back Ive been totally showering him with affection and also never ever yelling at him (even if I step in cat puke) - its turned around the situation completely. I couldn't be happier. I know it can be hard sometimes to love the instigator but be sure you're not transmitting any subtle or not so subtle hostility or anger and you might want to take him in a separate room to give him some affection if he seems like hes too nervous around the other cats to relax and enjoy being petted. Cats do a certain amount of challenging and competing with each other in the wild and even in the backyard among other domestic cats - since youre the food source its only logical theyd be competing over you and your affection. Also the time out is not intended to be punishment but just redirecting and send a message "youre going too far." Do you noticeif his heart is pounding like crazy, does he seem agitated? Is he actually biting? If so the time out is for him to chill out and calm down, that's all. With some cats play chasing and wrestling can turn serious - if you start to notice him get a crazy look in his eyes you could separate before he progresses into biting or serious attack. Actually - Im not really clear from your description that it is turning serious - how do the other cats react? The one is hiding under the bed, but is he/she OK under there? Do they feel safe to come out after a few minutes or are they cringing in fear hours/days at a time? If the former that's a good sign that they'll be OK once they get to know each other and how they operate. If they are eating together nicely that too is a good sign. Sleeping/sitting together? Even better! Editted to add; recently Ive noticed Figgy (former trouble maker) more and more just totally backing down and walking away if Orange hisses at him and doesn't want to play. Not always but its been a huge improvement! Some cats esp those taken away from the litter too early just never learn to moderate their biting and rough-housing - its like they have to be taught. I think part of Figgy's problem was he wasn't really understanding that he was hurting Orange (or me for that matter - he used to claw and bite quite hard when playing.)

How old is your cat? When my cat turned 17 (or so) she started some fairly strange behaviors - including howling - for no particular reason. Vet chalked it up to old age at first, but it turned out she had some other very serious medical conditions.

All I can say is - you poor thing. I had a cat that yowled when she was unhappy. I think it was just that she was a siamese mix. This was back before the civilized flea treatments we have today, so we'd take her to be bathed and dipped as needed. I'd go to pick her up and the moment I walked in the door to pay the bill I could hear her back in the back, yowling her head off. I was mortified at how loud it was and how everybody in the whole office had had to hear that all day.

If I tried to bathe her myself she could actually scream the word NOOOOOOOOOOOO!! That's also when I'd notice what an extraordinary reach she had with her front legs, making it extremely difficult to push her body down into the sink.

That's only funny if it's on Funniest Home Videos - it's just exhausting in person.

Thanks everybody. I've been trying to ignore her when she gets to yowling, and am working on feeding her (and other things) on my schedule instead of hers. I do think it helps.

Right now I'm waiting for a return call from the vet about her tests. The vet said her kidney values are all normal as of her last test 2 months ago (she does get sub-q's, but the vet is questioning if she even needs those at this point- I'm confused as this is a new vet we are dealing with. Same practice, but they set me up with a different vet for some reason). The question is going to be about the thryoid and whether that's adequately controlled at this point. The vet even went so far as to talk about possibly doing surgery to remove the thyroid tumor. I'm open to the idea (if meds can't adequately control it), but not eager to do surgery at her age and with her kidney history- which the new vet seems to be disregarding as a byproduct of the thyroid condition. Again, I'm feeling very confused today- sorry, I'm a bit off topic.

This cat is 14 years old and we've had her since she was a little kitten. She has always been a very intense, attention seeking, in-your-face kind of cat. Vocalizations have never been unusual for her, but with a kid who is barely sleeping at all these days, they are getting to the point of driving me nuts.

"Is she spayed?" Oh yes, long, long ago when she was just a wee thing.

She has seemed to tone it down a little in the past couple of days with my ignoring her and also a slight downward adjustment to her meds.

She is a tortie and has the intense personality that apparently goes with being a tortie.
