IMO, I would say definately not but the wall does need more than one picture . Your picture is too small for that wall. I have one of those walls in my guest bedroom that I am struggling to find something to fit as well. IMO I think that wall needs 2 large vertical canvas art type pictures, no frame as you have enough wood there already. I am not liking the horizontal shape of the picture on the wall. The vertical art pieces would echo your hutch and compliment the roundness of your area rug. I do like the picture itself just not in that spot..sorry.

They are too small to flank the picture and stacking on one side would feel unbalanced. If you had six of those plates, you could do it.

Have you considered a shelf under the picture? I'm envisioning not just a shelf but something that hangs on the wall and has small drawers.

Left over from the previous owner of my house, I have such a shelf in my bathroom - about 36 inches across, 5 inches high and with drawers. You would need something even wider so that it extends beyond the picture.

That's a big wall to fill.

I would wait until you can put a more substantial mirror or a larger framed print,
I can't see those trays as adding anything else than filling space.

The trays are very nice, but I agree with others. I'd leave the wall alone until you can add something with a more vertical feel, and more size.

Your chairs are very pretty! I think, with the others, that the picture looks lonely and a little dark on that wall. If it were my room, I would stand a really big floor mirror against that wall to break a big hole in it. If you want to spend zillions of dollars, Restoration Hardware has some, but they are not really in line with your scheme. Ballard Designs also has some that are very nice for such a spot (link below), but they are spendy as well.
Alternatively, if you like the idea, you can assemble a big floor mirror from stock beveled mirrors from the home center. I've done them with a piece of plywood or masonite cut just enough larger than the assembled bits, and trimmed the edges with stock picture frame molding, which can be painted or stained to suit you.
OR (I seem to be rolling along on this subject!) if you have an architectural salvage place nearby, you can replace panes of glass in an interesting old door with mirror.
The trick is to take a deep breath and make it big enough.
then I would take that lovely picture and hang it in the space to the right of the mirror, and I'd hang the tole plates one over the other to the left of your china cabinet.
Such a scheme would enliven and fully furnish your room, I think.

New morning! Looking again I agree the plates aren't going to fix my problem.

I was originally going to use a large mirror because I have a hard time committing to art. After we held one up we're not going to because it will reflect my neighbors yard and my refrigerator. :(

I agree the current picture looks sad all alone. I'll have be patient and keep searching.

Graywings - I'm having a hard time picturing this. Would you put anything else on the shelf? I have three 3' shelves I bought for the hall that I'm not using. DH was maybe going to use them in his man room. The shelf idea came up before but I'm afraid of having things look to cluttered. I also have a DH that likes wall space so of course he things this looks fab. as it, ha.

Bronwynsmom - Thanks! I have seen some chipped up architectural windows and odd ball stuff that was salvaged before that I was trying to think of how to use on this wall. The local thrift store usually has stuff like that.

Pal (I believe it was him) mentioned adding a chair rail to the wall to help break up the space. That was still something I'd like to do but isn't on the top of the to do list.

I also should add even though I say dining room this is our eat in kitchen area. Kitchen is beside this. I don't have a formal DR.

I think adding something like these would look pretty and fill in the space along with the fruit pic and tole plates. But I have a fondness for ferns...

These are 18" x 36". I could get 2. Listing describes them as antique iron. ? Have no idea how I'd attach them to the wall. Ha, I can just hear my DH asking why on earth I'm hanging windows on the wall!

To use the fruit picture in that spot and give it height and importance add an applique above it. Van Dykes have a nice selection.

The windows might work but I think they bring a very different look to the space. Not a classic look like your art, table, chairs and light fixture are.

Here's a long shot idea: do you like ironstone? It's so cheap to pick up a plate here and there at Goodwill, etc. and you could put a bunch of them on the wall around the picture. Ironstone wouldn't compete w/ the picture and would cheaply fill the space even if it were just temporary. That is if you like that style.

Personally I like Bronwyns mock up. Your tole trays are really pretty.

I like your idea about the vertical iron, but not those in particular. I think this look would look great. If you have a HomeSense or a HomeGoods near you I am sure you could find something alot less expensive that this site, but it gives you the idea I am thinking of.

Ttodd - I do like ironstone. You don't think the white would be too stark for the space? There is white in the picture but it's muted. You like Squirrels mock up with the black and white plates? I only have two of those at the moment. :(

Roseabbey - I like the idea of the verticals. We don't have a HomeGoods around here and the other places don't seem to have a good variety of iron stuff. It might be a stretch to find something vertical and matching. I did buy iron sconces at a yard sale last year but they're pretty skimmy and small looking beside the picture.

I liked these Pottery Barn candle holders but I don't think that would fill out the wall very well either. Plus, I don't really want to spend that much. I can't right now anyhow. Actually after looking I don't think they have the same ones anymore...

After thinking some more... I do have a few other places I could move that picture in the kitchen. It might be easier to move that to a better suited wall and think with a clean slate.

Today I like the idea of some type of trellis or lare iron gate. I'm trying to avoid running to Kirklands and grabbing something to put there and still not be satisfied with it.

Help.

The pic is fine, you just need to fill in the space around it! On either side of the pic hang two hurricane candle sconces,easily found at pier one, kirklands, marshalls etc. Adds nice ambiance during dinner! Above the pic, hang an iron scroll. Finally, add the transfereware plates above the candle sconces.

Here is my dining area where I used a tole tray as well as some other pictures. Thought this might help you get an idea how your pretty trays would look in a grouping. I think the iron decor would look nice as well.

Nancyr - Thanks for posting your photo. Very nice room! I have to ask...where did you get that fruit bowl? I've been looking and looking for something similar. That one looks to be of a good size too.

I vote for the six plates -- following the idea laid out by Squirrel's virtual plan -- BUT in simple, strong and plain black.

Plain black plates would not compete with the lovely artwork -- but would accent the main color -- and Squirrel's arrangement would visually enlarge the area.

You could even look for plain black platters for each side of the artwork -- and then add two plain black plates.

You could then add a black bowl with fruit on the table -- just to spread the visual "weight" of that color around the space.

I like the plate and sconce idea too. But that being said- I love the floor mirror idea- and can see it in the room. It wouldn't be hard to make at all.

For the sconces, something simple, like in the link, but smaller. Those seem a little large in the room views. But you can find them much cheaper at other places if you look around.

It seems like a casual room, so why not let the arrangement grow a little organically? The picture is a bit small, so you add some plates: still not enough, find another picture later on, and so on. Some of the best walls I have seen just got added to incrementally and imperfectly, over time---and some of the worst I have seen are a rigid static arrangement that is technically fine but just lacks something nonetheless. Allow it to *not be perfect and final from day one.

Like Palimpsest stated I don't think that it's the type of space that is so formal that it has to be 'done'. I guess my thought w/ the ironstone was that it was something that could grow to accommodate the space inexpensively and then when you find that perfect 'WOW' piece you can hang it there and group the ironstone elsewhere as it's own thing somewhere. Some of your older ironstone is much more creamy than the stark white that you see so often. I just bought a piece off of my mom last weekend that's almost brown around the edges and super creamy towards the middle. I'm not an ironstone expert though. I also like how the varying shades of white combine to create a really nice visual flow. I thought that since the the ironstone would be one color it wouldn't compete w/ your very pretty picture.
