Dining room wall color to go w/this red & black rug????

I posted advice about this same rug recently, but I'm still needing more advice-- I'm just really struggling with what color (or even color family) to use on the walls to go with this rug. We are in the process of building a new home and I would like to put this rug in our dining room. We will have to buy all new furniture (waaa-waaaa... yes, I'm so heartbroken about that-ha!), and I'm thinking of maybe going with an antique black hutch. Our floor will be hardwood, probably with a golden tint. Other than that, I'll need lots of help! The entryway adjacent to the dining room will be a light gray-green-khaki neutral. The other room adjacent to the entryway (on the other side) will be probably a cool neutral, like a light blue-green (maybe SW "Comfort Gray"). So I want the blue-green room and the dining room to balance with the lighter gray-green-khaki neutral entryway. Hope that makes sense.

I really like the idea of doing a grayish-brown, but when I look at swatches none really look good! Someone mentioned a silvery color, but I just don't know. Help, please! Any advice or ideas are greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

A closer-look at the rug.. pardon my daughter's feet. She's "helping" me vaccuum with her kiddie-vaccuum.

OR I could go with this rug for the dining room.. does anyone think this would look better in the dining room?

I LOVE Comfort Gray. It's really easy on the eys and very rich and elegant looking.

Is it possible that the color a shade darker than Comfort Gray (Oyster Bay) would blend with the rug? I see a bit of grayish green in the carpet with your daughter's legs, but it might be my monitor.

The rug will be such a gorgeous and interesting focal point, maybe a bright color on the walls would compete with it.

I don't see a brown blending with the rug either.

Maybe you could print out a picture of your rug and take it with you. I'm leaning towards the gray in the center medallion or the greenish gray that was pointed out above.

Consider not having a rug-it you keep felt on your chair legs you will not absolutely have to have one. I really like the curtains. Also, if you do really want a rug I think you should wait until the floor is down- it will look very different with the new floor. You will want felt on the chair legs anyway for the event they get onto the wood. We have a greatroom/dining totally open and have no rug under the table-not problems.

After we painted, we found the original paint can, but I gave it away since it no longer matched. It was a Berh paint, but it may or may not have been a Berh color -- it was painted nearly 10 years ago. Sorry. Now, I do have the BM can with the "custom" paint. I am not sure the label is accurate. There was one point where it went too purple, but for Regal Select Matte, it says one gallon is W1 4x 3.5000 M1 0x 23.5000 B1 4x 20.2500 O1 2x 16.2500 Looking at the BM colors online, it looks like it would be most similar to Admiral Blue or Midnight Navy, but not quite either. The earlier color was similar to Oxford Grey, but maybe a bit deeper and a bit more blue (it looks different online than on the card I have).

Well anything could be changed out if you don't like something about it. But is it mainly the wall color you don't like? Easiest IMHO to change that. Go with something less contrasty with the other colors in the room. More beige. I had the same problem many years ago when I moved into my first house. I took a lot of time carefully choosing what I thought was the ideal wall color. My dad was visiting helping me get the house ready. He painted the whole room while I was at work. I came home to the "pepto bismol" room. And I could not really repaint after all that work my dad did for me. That's actually when I first started hanging out on this forum, trying to figure out how to make it less of a problem. So if you can't or really don't want to repaint, the other approach is to fill the room with some accents and more colors similar to the wall color. Something gold or yellowish. You have a lot of blue, which is the contrasting color, which only serves to highlight the wall color. Since your art has an oriental vibe, ever thought about shoji screens for the smaller windows? I wouldn't sweat the proportion of things, that can often appear off on the standard quick photo shot folks take for advice on here. Same can be said for the color of the walls. But you mention quite a bit about not liking it. Overall I LOVE your room!

Why not add a rug or two to your space and let the colors from it (them) lead your upholstery choice? Measure carefully. If you plan to hang a chandelier above the dining table, take that into consideration to determine what floor space you have for rugs.

Would you consider a soft peach/apricot paint? That color might play well off the cool colors in your other rooms.

Mona, thanks for the advice, but I honestly don't think I could do any shade of peach or apricot. That's probably my least favorite color, even if it looked great with the rug. I appreciate your advice, though!!!

And yes, Randita, I think the Oyster Bay just might work!!

I love Farrow & Ball's grey/brown tones. For subtle shades, they really have a wonderful selection

I like London Stone, which is pretty much my favorite paper bag brown. Get the swatch chart, and have your local paint store match it in whatever base you like.

Having said that, I think that a dining room is the least interesting place for a great rug. You don't look at it while you're in the room, chairs and feet scrape back and forth on it, and it's a pain to move everything to vacuum all the dropped crumbs.
