Okay, I'm game. What is a "cake ball" recipe?

It's Chef from South Park and his 'Chocolate Salty Balls'!!!!!

Way to sweet for me. I didn't make them but several gals I know made them last year, and I have seen mention again recently. Basic directions. 1 box of cake mix, your choice. Bake as directed and then break into small pieces while still warm. Stir in a can of frosting mix. Melt chocolate in a small bowl. Make cake balls by rolling walnut size balls. Dip in melted chocolate.Lots of recipes I am sure can be found, by googling. This is a mix and match kind of thing with the flavors you want.

Easier alternative that goes over well:
Oreo Truffles
Crush a lb of oreos in a food processor until just crumbs. Add a package of cream cheese (8 oz) and a tsp of vanilla. Mix until completely blended with no traces of white.
roll into balls and dip into almond bark. Drizzle with melted white chocolate.
I make these and everyone clamors for them. Personally, I don't like them. I think it is a texture thing. The texture is like a raw dough ball.
But everytime I make them several people ask for the recipe. I think they should be named PMS balls.

One of my neighbors made cake balls last year, and I thought they were too sweet too. THe Oreo truffles really are a huge hit with most - I don't care for the mouth feel of the creamy filling in Oreos, so I can't really get past that. However, I still make them and there are lots of people that love them. BTW - I often add a little orange extract and Gran Marnier to the balls - that choco-orange flavor is quite nice.

I don't care for canned frosting at all, but maybe made with homemade they would be beter? And I'd love to try those Oreo truffles made with some Trader Joe's JoJo's. Hmmmm.....I may have a new addition to my Christmas candy list.

Tracey, I have made them with the JoJo's..both chocolate/vanilla and vanilla/vanilla....I did them for #3's 2nd grade class last year..they were gobbled by the kids and the adults that were at the party...people couldn't believe that they were basically sandwich cookies and cream cheese. LOL

I've never cared for Oreo cookies, so the Oreo Truffles don't appeal to me.

Truffles - Crisp Chocolate Truffles

1 jar 7 oz marshmallow cream

2 T butter

1 C semi sweet chocolate chips

2 C Rice Krispies

14 oz bittersweet chocolate
2 Tablespoons vegetable shortening

white chocolate chips.

In heavy saucepan combine marshmallow creme, butter and chocolate
chips. Cook over low heat until chocolate is melted and mixture is
smooth, stirring constantly. Remove from heat.

Stir rice Krispies into hot mixture, mixing until thoroughly combined.
Drop mixture by rounded measuring teaspoons onto waxed paper lined
cookie sheet. Shape into round balls and Refrigerate about 1 hour or
until firm.

Melt bittersweet chocolate with shortening and dip each chocolate ball
in melted chocolate and place on waxed paper-lined cookie sheet. Melt
white chocolate and place in zip lock bag. Cut tiny hole in corner of
bag and drizzle white chocolate over truffles. Refrigerate until firm.

Place in small candy paper cups.

Ann, I really like the idea of those crispy truffles. I'm going to make them for sure for the employee goodie bags. I made caramels today and these will be something quite different.

Never heard of cake balls, but I have a feeling I wouldn't like them if people are saying they're too sweet.

Not a fan of oreos, either, and I don't do marshmallow cream because it's not vegetarian. Those look good though, Ann.

Give me good old fashioned truffles made with cream and chocolate. MMMmmmmm. I'm hoping to make some soon for Christmas and such. Easy and delicious.

Sally, what is it in the Marshmallow cream that makes it non-vegetarian? Is it the Egg whites? Or the Xanthan Gum?

I'm looking at the label on a jar and the ingredients are Corn Syrup, Sugar, Water, Dried Egg Whites, Artifical Flavour, Cream of Tartar and Xanthan Gum.

Vegan or Not additives.

Cream Cheese Brandy Cherry Balls.

1/2 Cup marshino cherries, quartered
2 Tablespoons Brandy
1 cup semi sweet chocolate chips
1 cup butterscotch chips
1 8 ounce package cream cheese
2 cups mini marshmallows
1/2 cup chopped walnuts
2 Cups flaked coconut

Marinate cherries at least 4 hours or overnite in brandy Melt Chocolate
chips and butterscotch chips and add cream cheese. Stir in cherries,
marshmallows and walnuts and refrigerate until cold enough to roll into
balls. Roll in coconut. Refrigerate. The longer the better. The
flavours intensify.

I'm guessing it's egg whites that make it non-vegetarian. I have to admit none of these appeal to me, but they look pretty.

I had to snicker at the reactions to the cake balls. If they're made with a good, but not cloyingly-sweet icing, they're not bad.
In any event, cake balls were originally created by cake decorators as a way to use up cake trimmings from cake sculpturing and such; the cupcake version is a new and equally delicious fad.

Although, my gang will normally line up for plain cake scraps, and I'm okay with that.

I was facinated by the whole cake ball thing so I have experimented with them lately. I still need alot of practice. :) Sol is so right, why use canned frosting, I use a real butter frosting with a bit of cream cheese, 10x sugar, and whipping cream. They are not overly sweet. The turkey ones are just dipped cake balls. The other ones are made like on the Bakerella website, using candy molds as the bottom

Vegetarian marshmallow: nope, not the egg whites, that would be vegan. My bet is Sally is referring to the gelatin. Sally, just keep your eye out for kosher marshallow products. Look for a 'U' inside a circle indicating rabbinical oversight by the Union of Orthodox rabbis - but I bet you know that already.

Ann: yup, Kraft's brand is kosher, certified by a different agency than the OU folks. You can see the 'hechsher' or certification under the capital 'M' on the amazon page linked below. My guess is less and less manufacturers are using gelatin, but I wouldn't know since I don't much buy it. My kosher friends do....

I had a lot of chocolate cake scraps so I moistened them with brandy, rolled into balls and dipped in chocolate... they were very popular with the family :-)

I made these with the original boxed cake/ canned frosting and dipped them in Ghiradelli chocolate for the Swim Team Dessert table tonight.

I was almost mugged for the recipe! The kids were skeptical about them the parents were OLD PEOPLE GONE WILD! They were a HUGE hit!

SO I have been charged with making then exactly as written in the original recipe for EVERY SWIM MEET THIS SEASON!

Oh, Alexa, your post is such a crack up! So glad I *bumped* this thread and you benefited from it (ummmm, maybe "benefited" is not the right word, if you have to make them every single swim meet this season!). You must have been the most popular person at the meet!

I did the same thing. The first time, I followed the box/can recipe. The second time I made them, I tried to glam them up, I guess, by making scratch cake/homemade frosting. Same crowd of eaters, basically. Honest-to-goodness, I think the box/can was a bigger hit!! LOL!

Oh well! Given how labor intensive these are, relatively speaking, I guess the box/can saves some time! I love the fact that I can make hundreds of them when I make them and freeze what I don't use. I do love these things, though!!
