How high are the ceilings?

I think the color looks good. Is it kind of a bronzy gold? Hard to tell in the photos. You say it's really pretty in real life....trust your instinct.

The ceilings are 9 ft. The walls are what I think is a pretty color and it is sort of a bronzy gold, but the medallion is a gold-gold. The medallion actually matches the sconces on the wall (b/c the lighting person lost one of the orignal sconces that went with the chandellier, they were since then discontinued, so I had to spraypaint replacements....grrr.) I guess my biggest worry is that the plate from the chandelier is so obviously a different tone from the medallion.

This is what I would do:
I would take out my articulated ladder, grab some tape, pick a color and get up there and paint it, and re-paint it until I was happy with it.

If you do not have an articulated ladder, you need to consider purchasing one. It will be a much better use of your money, IMHO.

I think it looks great, by the way - but I don't have to live with it.

By the way, I'm only 5' tall and have painted quite a few ceilings and around ceiling medallions and fans.

Seems like the chandelier is hung very high for a dining room - is it 30 inches from the top of the table? The sconces seem very high as well.

As for the medallion, why do you have to take anything down? I would get some craft paint in a bronzey-gold that is closer to the chandelier color and sponge it on or dry-brush it on to add a bronzey-gold highlight.

You know that you can put a large trash bag over the fixture (make sure the light is off and stays off) and tape it closed to the chain. Tape off any other exposed areas around the medallion.

It works well for painting a medallion in place, plus no spots on the light fixture.

Whoa! I just went back up to look for the sconces that Les mentioned. They look way too high, the chandelier as well.

If I didn't like it, I'd get up there on a ladder and turn it the color(s) I like, being intensely careful not to get any paint on the ceiling. You can mask off areas you don't want to paint.

Yes, the sconces ARE very high, sadly, but by the time it was done...well, that ship has sailed. I was wondering the same thing....why can't they put some plastic lining around the chandelier, tape it up, and then paint it??? But they're saying they are going to spray it with paint for a more finished look and therefore it must come down. Nonetheless, if we were to go back an paint it, what color? I don't know how we could possibly get it to match with the chandelier!

The only place that it would bug me is where the cap meets the medallion.

Have you considered painting the inside, it looks fluted from your pics, but it is hard to tell, with your trim color and leave the outside ring the golden color?

I would get up there and handpaint that myself with an artist's paintbrush. I would cover the chandelier with plastic and with a metallic paint that matches the chandelier I would just paint the inside of the flutes the bronze color as paint_chips suggested. That way you have created more depth, more interest and certainly, more individuality. Good luck!

I know you didn't ask about the height of the chandelier but I would not be bothered by the color of the medallion as much as how high the chandelier is hanging. I know it is too late to bring the sconces down but can't an electrician add back some of the chain and pull the wires down on the chandelier?

The paint is Kelly Moore: Walls  Gold Promise, Ceiling  Star of the Garden

Our builder uses Kelly Moore, which I know isn't well known, so I was trying to find something similar to BM Gingersnap (walls) and SW Believable Buff (ceiling).

First of all.........the electrician is giving you a load of c%*p with talk about taking out large screws in order to remove the chandelier. Yes, it would be a pain to take down the chandelier, and I'm sure the medallion is screwed in, but it won't be any less stable to take down and remount.

Having said that, I wouldn't pay someone to take it down, but would climb up there and play with some paints. Start with at least 2-3 colors (acrylics from Michael's) until you find a combo that works, and personally, I'd paint the cap of the chandelier, along with the medallion.

BTW, you'll get a better match doing it by hand than they will ever get with spray. For a smoother effect, use a sponge brush and don't be afraid to thin with water to get the right look.

If you're not physically able to do this (and it will tire your neck!) then tell them to take it down and you'll call them for reinstall when you're happy with the paint color. Just remember to also paint any exposed screw heads!
