Kneading Bread with the KA Question

I'm reading a recipe for an Italian Country Bread.

It instructs mixing the dough on low speed for 2 minutes, then increasing to medium speed for 6-8 minutes.

I'm not sure that dough should be kneaded at a speed higher than Low on the mixer. I sure don't want to burn the motor out.

What do you awesome bakers think?
