I don't have the book but have tried a number of recipes from the show. I did see the show last Friday and Daphne Oz made some sauteed whole carrots in olive with garlic, fresh ginger, orange zest. Then they were braised in gingerale and topped with toasted hazelnuts. They were delicious. I think I will be making them once a week I liked them so much.

I think the important thing is that The Chew is the medium that made your son take an interest in cooking. Everyone starts somewhere!

If the recipes in the book are what they cook on the show, from what I've seen and tried the book should be good.

That's so funny...The Chew...I don't have tv but watch some things online. I thought it was a talk show..kind of a take-off on The View! Who knew it was a cooking show :)

I don't catch it very often, but I think it's fun. I'm a Michael Symon and Mario Batalli fan so....

When is it on and what channel? Never heard of it.

I've watched it a few times. It's on around here at noon central time on ABC.

I like the bald guy, the rest are too wrapped up in themselves, especially Battalia or whatever his name is. I wonder is he isn't Joe Bastianich's long lost twin brother. Just as arrogant, just as repulsive IMO.

I just love this show. So does my Mom. They have the best raport. This is the first cooking show I have seen where Mario has found a balance that works with his personality. They play well off each other and they are all very talented. It is on at 1pm here so I have to tape it.

Back to the book. This question just reminded me that I got the book in the mail about a month ago. The week of my move. I forgot I even had it. I just pulled it out and thumbed through the first half of the book. Get it! For sure. It looks like it will be a lot of fun to read. Make sure when you give it to him that you teach him that cookbooks are meant to be read cover to cover and then you just go back to the recipes when you need to. I learned that on this forum. It is really well done. He will enjoy it.

Bonus! I found the new Ina Garten book with it, Foolproof. That looks great too. I will have to plan a day on vacation after the holidays to go trough them both.

I'm excited to report that I just got confirmation for four audience tickets to The Chew in the latter part of May. Three of my friends and I will be going and making a food-filled day of it.

I like Michael Symon, a Midwestern boy with that goofy laugh, you can't help but laugh along. I think I've seen the show twice, maybe. It's not as offensive as some, but I don't remember to turn it on when I'm somewhere that has television so I'm not overly excited about it either.

They have a book? Wow, I am out of touch...

I love The Chew! I record it. Can't imagine anyone finding anyone on this show offensive. They seem to have a great time together.

I would love the cookbook, too. They each have their own style so should be interesting.

Maggie, I didn't mean offensive in that they were profane or crude. I meant offensive in that cooking shows don't seem to do a whole lot of cooking any more. You turn it on and get fashion or a competition or a commercial, but very little cooking.

At least they do SOME cooking on The Chew, or at least they did when I watched it, along with the obligatory celebrity guests, some foot ball players that I don't remember.

There are so many cooking shows on and they all have their own twist I suppose to set them apart from the others.
For instance, yesterday, The Chew celebrated Earth Day with some cooking and some environmentally friendly tips. Sometimes they have a guest that cooks, sometimes not. Recently they had Gwyneth Paltrow making a dish from her cookbook.

If a cooking show format is not to my liking I don't get offended - I just change the channel. Most of the time I don't notice as I am usually cleaning or some other form of multi-tasking while the TV is on.
The Chew is one show I do like. And I have made several things I've watched them make.

Good for you Ruthanna! Let us know what you will be wearing so we can pick you out of the audience!

Teresa, I do get offended by what I see as false advertising. If it's called a cooking show and I spend half an hour of my time waiting for them to cook something that never happens or turns out to be a commercial for crackers with cream cheese or something similar, then I've wasted half an hour waiting for something I've been promised that never gets delivered.

It's one of the reasons I stopped watching the Food Network, I got lots of cake competitions but never any instructions as to how to do it myself.

So, if it's called a cooking show, I expect cooking. Otherwise it's a talk show or a variety show or an advertisement. Just tell me, sheesh, and don't waste my time with misleading and inaccurate advertising. That's offensive, it's like not labeling food. Just tell me what it is and let me decide instead of lying to make me try it and hoping I'll like it and stay.

Obviously "The Chew" is a take off of "The View" a multi-hosts talk show from the same channel.

Perhaps "Chew" is a reference to "Chew the fat"?

Because of work, I only managed to watch it a few times. Sometimes it is interesting, sometimes it is boring, like any other talk format shows.

Ruthanna, make sure you ask a few questions so that the camera will be on you.

I hear ya, Annie. I was reacting to cynic thinking Michael Simon is arrogant. Don't see that at all! All good. Def more an entertainment show but always get good tips and recipes.

I think the definition of "cooking show" has expanded in the past ten years as the audience has expanded. During the day time hours there seem to be more shows with a person demonstrating cooking some type of food. During prime time, cooking shows are more entertainment oriented drawing in a wider audience including both cooks and non-cooks. Since the start of reality shows competition TV has become quite popular among men, woman, and kids. My 4 oldest grandkids all love Chopped and Cupcake Wars, for instance. One even had their B-day party centered around Cupcake Wars. IMO, it's all good if it gets people interested in cooking. Actually, I've learned quite a bit about unfamiliar ingredients from watching Chopped. I watched it tonight and learned I can make dessert from cherry toms, ginger snaps, coco nibs, and tofu. Who knew? lol I don't watch Cupcake Wars - don't like the host.

I haven't seen The Chew but with Ruthanna in the audience - I'll have to start watching.

I wold love to go to that show. I am watching it right now with the ipad in my lap. It is one of my favorite shows. It is meant to be more like the view but with a food and nutrition and fashion focus. And let's not forget crafting. You get Clinton's Craft Corner. Watching a couple of iron chefs play with glitter and glue guns cracks me up.

And sadly, here I sit in April and I still haven't read the book yet. It is on the top of the pile. I rescued a puppy in Dec and my life has never been the same.

I like the show but I never saw it as a cooking show. Yes, they cook, but others topics are covered also. I have seen decorating, crafts, health topic there.

Annie, I don't think there is any false advertising on the show, you may have misunderstood. While Batali and Symons are chefs, the other hosts are not. Give it another try.

I think you are right tricia - the definition of "cooking show" has changed since the days when Julia Child ruled. You still have Lidia, Giada, and a few others. But for the most part none of the rest bill themselves as cooking shows. As I said above they all have their own little twist trying to capture their own segment of the market. They rely heavily on personalities to make their show stand out. I think they have a good mix of people on The Chew.

And the competition shows are just that - contests. They aren't there for instruction - but rather to provide drama, stress and a winner.

I'd have to get television again to watch it. I've seen it a couple of times at Amanda's. I'd never get to watch it at Mother's, she hates Mario Batali, says he needs to "grow into some long pants". (grin)

When Elery sells his house, I know we'll have to get cable or satellite or something, he'll go crazy without TV. As it is we do have Netflix and some computer streaming thing, he was watching "The Hunger Games" the other night and I had to go sit in the kitchen with cookbooks just so I didn't have to see it or hear it.

I won't watch the competition cooking shows, they are too much like "reality" TV, a way to put on a show without actually paying a real actor to entertain me. And "drama" is right. My stepson is friends with "Courtney", who was on the cake competitions more than once, she has a place in Ann Arbor. They were all scripted, she was told what to do and when to do it, to add to the "drama". So it's not really much of a competition at all.

As for "The Chew", it didn't really bill itself as a cooking show, which is why I said it was less offensive than many others. I've never seen "The View", so I couldn't compare.

Love this show. I went to a live taping last year with my husband and MIL. After the show taped we spent the night in NY and went on a foodie trip to all the markets.

I have some pictures somewhere that I can post from the show taping. Will have to look for them.

I've seen the show a couple of times, and have enjoyed it. For some reason, we get Friday's show on Monday. Monday's the only day I'm home to see it, so that's when I watch it. I already tape too many shows to start taping a daily show, though. If you let us know what day or week your show will be airing, I'll set it up to tape that one. How fun!

I actually like Batali, and Symon, and especially Carla, who is a chef, too, by the way. I have no idea who the Oz lady is. I enjoy the other host, too. I've never noticed Batali being arrogant. Maybe I'm either naive or easy to please. I used to enjoy the show he had on the Food Network.

I've never made it more than 5 minutes through The View. Can't stand it. The Chew is much, much better.

*Update - Well, the four of us did make it to The Chew on Tuesday and the show they were taping will be shown in most of the country on Friday, May 24th. It was very interesting to see how they shot the segments so out of sequence of the finished product. The tasters were filmed tasting the food before the hosts even began to prepare it.

We completed a fun day with a visit to the American Folk Art Museum, late lunch at an Irish pub, a stop at Zabar's and some general roaming around. We took advantage of a new senior rate at one of the local bus companies for $21.50 round trip, which was a great savings. The only downside was that the show gave us these huge insulated tote bags filled with product placement samples, including a microplane zester, boxes of pasta, and large glass jars of Hellman's mayo. I like to travel light and didn't plan on toting all that around.

All five co-hosts were there and interacted with the audience in between takes. Carla Hall is my favorite.

We couldn't take photos during the shooting but I took one just before it started.

I am truly blessed to have friends with adventuresome spirits.

Annie, I wore my favorite bright pumpkin jacket and a medium blue shirt. We weren't in the section behind the food tasters. Those tickets went to sponsors - just in the middle of the middle audience section (with a great view of all the proceedings).

I am glad that you squeeze in American Folk Art Museum. interesting place. There is also Museum of Modern Art next door.

Isn't Zabar's a great food store? I enjoy going there to get food, walk across to Central Park to have lunch then stroll to the Museum of Natural History.

I have been to a few talk shows. Often they do two shows using the same audience. The host just change his/hers outfit and pretend it's a different show on a different day. They save money that way.

To get your face on camera, you have to think of a question to ask. They generally need to know what you are going to ask before the show.

For some reason, we get Friday's show on Monday. I'll tape it both days to be sure to get it. It's weird for them to talk about "Value Friday" when I'm watching it on Monday.

It sounds like it was great fun. Carla is a hoot. Jerry brought her cookbook home from the library. I've made one thing out of it, but can't really judge it completely because I had to substitute ingredients - not because they were hard to find, but because idiot me didn't read the recipe carefully and forgot to buy the right ingredients. It still turned out good. I'd love to try it as written, though. It was the Mushroom Tart.
