Happy Hannukah!

To all those who are celebrating, or keeping those of us who do, company in kind. The festival (not holiday) begins tonight - bring on the Latkes!

Hannukah 101

but it will be gone after today

We're having a small party on Friday, I'll make my weekly challah, latkes w/apple sauce and sour cream, carrot souffle, and other folks will bring a salad and jelly donuts. Maybe I'll make a sweet/sour cabbage dish to offset the oily foods, heh heh

This is our family Hannukiah, it could have easily been my mother's family when they got to Ellis Island. She was born in Romania en route to the USA from Russia, a babe in arms. My grandfather was fleeing the czar. I'm grateful he made it over!

I saw a "fail proof" recipe for latkes in my email box this morning and thought of you. I think I might make some for supper.

Merry Christmas, Natalie! I am a sucker for holiday traditions. Baking was a big tradition with my Mum and I. I honour that by sharing homemade goodies with friends now. Also that time-honoured tradition of making something by hand. Have to say that is one of my favourites!! Nancy.

A good time was had by all!! Three are napping, one is packing, one is visiting friends, one is listening to music and I've taken a minute to turn on the computer and look at the news before tackling the mountain of dishes. I truly enjoyed cooking for the family this year and wanted to thank all of you for the pleasure that being part of the CF has brought me the past few months. Cooking is one way I've always had to show my family that I love them and it has been fun to find likeminded friends here. Peace and love to you all.... Grace

Wednesday was the second candle. I screwed up and read the wrong calendar and invited my small family for Wednesday but we had a great time. My grandson's first latkes and he was so happy to have them, like several of his friends. And he measured the baking powder and pepper and mixed the Simply Potatoes with the flour and cracked the eggs. Me and dil fried. She's wonderful. Delicious. Easy menu, kind of around the world. We had greek seasoned lamb kebobs, sour cream/cucumbers, tomatoes, meat loaf, apple sauce, home baked challah and artisan bread, fresh pineapple(we said Hawaii), Plate of lettuces, used for wraps. I forgot a lot of stuff. Except for the meat it was kind of milchicky(dairy). That's like, except for that, Mrs. Lincoln, how did you enjoy the play?) I have done better in earler years, gelt, dreidle, and songs and lots more preparation, but this was what I did this year and we had fun. DD graced our presence for periods of time(between shopping forays) aint no shopping in Missoula. Are there any latkes left??? We saved you some lovely lotkes. She was not too thrilled wit

Jessy, I think of you fondly every year when I serve my latkes on the beautiful tray you sent me in a swap. Love it!

Tonight we are having a simple roasted chicken, potato latkes, squash and salad. I'll probably roast some carrots along with the potato since I like to have 3 veg dishes at dinner. For dessert, cookies! I'm saving the doughnut making for this Sunday when I make them with the group of special needs kids. They are so delicious, I can't resist them, so I have to limit the production to once a year for my own sake!

Jessy, I love your Chanukiah! That could be my grandma's family, too.

We'll have latkes tonight, along with baked swordfish, acorn squash, and a green veggie.

What a beautiful chanukiah and a lovely latke dish. Good wishes to all. Does a bagel sandwich count as festival fare? Nah, I guess not.

Wow, Hanukkah sure came around fast this year. Jessy, I love your menorah and it surely could represent a lot of our American ancestors (except mine who got here before anyone thought of Ellis Island).

Now go spin that dreidel! Happy Hanukkah!

Happy Chanukka....Cooked for a funeral lunch all day....and I mean ALL day.
I wish someone would fry up some latkes for me....got to be better than the lunch leftovers I plan on eating....
Maybe I'll get down the Chanukai and light a couple of candles...Miracles are always a good thing to delebrate.

I hope everyone is having a Happy Chanukkah! Jessy I just love your menora. Totally cool! Years ago I found a real old plastic electric menorah and bought it. Now I put blue lights in it and light it in camaraderie with my Jewish friends.

Another one who loves latkes. I don't know anyone who makes cheese blintzes for this holiday but, they're fried so I think they should be included. Love me some blintzes..lol..

The Dreidel says, "A Great Miracle Happened There" (or here). Each side has the first letter of one part of the saying. I think that pretty well explains it. Google it. As for me, the great miracle was that I managed to make latkes without setting the kitchen on fire as usual.

But the miracle happened before people played dreidel.
Why the letters comemorating the miracle on a top?
Your latkes look yummy? Applesauce? Sour cream? or both?

Here ya go Linda. Don't get lost in the numerology part of it, I think the closest explanation in this article is that the Jews kept one on the table when they were studying the Torah (Bible, five books of Moses) as a distraction/alibi when approached by investigating Greek/Roman troops.
