Special Goodie Delivery!

I was about to leave to run some errands when there was a knock on the door. It was the postman with a large package from Texas! One of the Wild Rice Lottery winners went way overboard with a package of thank you goodies. But as they say "they say everything bigger is Texas." Apparently that applies to thank you gifts also!

Trixietx (aka Karen) and her husband are farmers. One of their crops is peanuts. I opened the box to discover freshly roasted peanuts - which doubled as the "packing peanuts" for the other goodies! Also included in the box was a lovely bottle of Llano red wine from Lubbock, a bottle of Red Mud BBQ sauce from McLean, and a delicious looking bottle of creamy dressing from Quanah.

I left my camera at my Mom's house on Christmas. Otherwise I would be posting a photo of this delightful package of goodies.

Thank you Karen! I think I need to share some of these peanuts with Joshua who drew your name for the lottery. I have never tasted peanuts this good.

Cathy, the best part was seeing your face when I gave you teh gift bag. That was priceless. Here we were in our jammies talking about the swap when I mentioned that mine was being delivered that day! I also told Cathy that this was a tough one as she had been sucha good freind to me over the years, but I stuck to my kitchen favorites. The everyday pan is just that, you use it everyday. No more turning the pan to get the long handle out of the way, easy to put inthe sink to clean and in a pinch it can go right to the table like a paella pan. When my first cheapy one died, I had a new one ordered in 24 hours, I knew I could not be without one. And do we ever have enough spatulas? Or just the right platter for that certain something? Enjoy as I did choosing it for you.I hope my favorites become yours.

That bowl is so cool. Talk about the perfect thing to cook a chicken in. I'll buy one in a heartbeat if I ever see one. I had to laugh when I saw the magazines. My best friend in tech school when I was in the service was from Sandpoint. He and I had my only involuntary visit to a police station in Lake Village Arkansas in 1975. If your ever there don't flash your high beams at a Chicot County police officer. Very nice package Katie.

I have pared down my baking significantly as far as cookies and treats go. When the kids were home I made tins and trays of cookies for bus drivers, teachers' lounges, older folks in our neighborhood who no longer baked for themselves, etc.. My group of 6 close women friends looked so forward to them because they didn't bake. Then the kids grew up and moved, we moved from the old neighborhood and all my women friends started South Beach, WW, or Sugar Busters diets and I didn't want to undermine their efforts. A couple years ago when my Mom was diagnosed w/ breast cancer (her 2nd time) right after T-Giving I was overwhelmed w/ her care over the holidays and just didn't do the baking that year. The world did not come to an end, and I discovered that I could choose to keep the tradition - or not. These days I bake when I choose to, when I have guests and when asked to bring dessert to a gathering. Like someone above noted, it's not like in years past when people really seemed to treasure the homemade baked gift. The cost in time and ingredients seems greater than in the past. I'm delighted to bake for those I know enjoy it, but I don't dole out the homemade treats the way I used to.

How many people are coming?? I thought about bringing Coach's Oats cookies (lots of coconut, oatmeal, and nuts). I may bring almond chex mix ... crasins, cashews, almonds, and covered with a cooked sugar/karo/butter mixture - a friend from my book club calls it "legal crack" because it is so addicting! Sue

Teresa, I hope nothing was broken and that you will enjoy what I sent you because I know we will enjoy your MN rice.

We live in a rural area (population 2500) and I am always mailing peanuts, the post office expects it this time of year. When I went to the post office to get boxes and they asked me what size I told them something big enough for a bottle of wine, a bottle of BBQ sauce, salad dressing and peanuts (what a combination.) They all started laughing and I told them the reason why I was mailing this. I just know they are all jealous now!! They have never tasted real wild rice.

Nothing was broken except a couple of the packing peanuts. They did not go to waste though - I just had a snack of peanuts and a hot toddy to prepare me for shoveling off my deck. Enough of the snow melted over the last couple of days that is is now only 12" deep at the door and about 2 feet deep further out.

Thank you again Karen. I gave two baggies full of peanuts to Joshua and his brother. That along with Lou's chocolate crispies and some of the other treats that have come my way recently - I think I have a couple of life long friends in the boys!

A wonderful way to start a new year!

Actually, I have cooked brown rice with fresh peanuts. It works. I think it will work even better with wild rice.

Teresa, I used some of the rice today making your recipe for baked rice and it is delicious. It is being used very sparingly! I am going to have to look up where you said we could order it because I know I will need more.
