only slightly OT eBay question

I saw a listed item on eBay yesterday and made a mental note of it. Then I asked the seller a question. He responded. When I checked the auction again, it had changed from "Buy It Now" to a regular auction, and the price had gone up $200. It's possible that I confused the item with another auction but I don't think so.

There were no bids on the item, so under eBay rules, can the seller just revise the auction? Is there a way to check the history of the item?

Also, the seller's response encouraged me to look at his website. When I did, I found that same auction item at $100 less than the newly-revised eBay listing. Shouldn't I just buy it from his website?
