Input requested on dd's new bed.

We are replacing our 9 year old's bedroom set. Right now she has a full size white sleigh bed. We would like to get her a twin size with a trundle so she has more room. In your opinion what is more versatile a white day bed, a white canopy, iron like bed, or even a bunk bed? She likes them all. I would like to keep this into her teen years if possible so am wondering which style will grow with her. She does like girly things mixed with fun accessories.

Hmmm, this is tough because before you know it she'll be a pre-teen, then a teenager, and her taste will radically change from whatever it is now. On the one hand those loft bunk beds might be exciting now and would be cool later too. And they're space efficient - you can put another bed or a desk on the bottom. But maybe by 16 or 17 she'd outgrow that, I'm not sure. My daughter is 16 1/2 and doesn't seem to care much about her room at all anymore. Her years of trying to create a special space for herself there are over. I've even offered to get her a more comfortable bed and, surprisingly, she says "no, I'll be in college in a year and a half, it doesn't matter." The one thing she does need is ample storage, otherwise everything lives on the floor.

I just asked my daughter if she thinks they're "too young" for someone her age and she said she doesn't think so, and "they're fun".

Just my opinion as the mom of three teens 14, 16 and 18, and speaking from our own experience. By the time our kids were about 12, they had all outgrown their twin beds. My kids are not overweight, in fact they are thin. I know space is at a premium in kids' rooms, but I just wanted you to think about this before you make this investment. Of course, then they all go to college and sleep in a tiny twin dorm room bed!

You're off to a good start. The assessment of what you need, coupled with your plan, will probably get you a good result the first time instead of the the third reconstruction. I have only a few comments. Looking at your plan my mind was having difficulty reconciling the plan with the stated yard dimensions of 60 ft by 40 to the backdoor, 29 to the bedroom. It's a minor thing that would probably only bother me. But after superimposing a grid on the plan it can be seen there is a small error of scale (the red dash lines match the dimensions for the yard and house walls). Keep this in mind as you develop plant spacing. Also, you make no mention of the slope of the property. One important consideration of every landscape is water movement and drainage. If your yard is flat, even small changes in grade or hardscape can cause a problem. I suggest you use one copy of your plan to map all water movement; roof water, any water entering from another property, where the excess water leaves your property, and flow direction throughout the yard. One of the items you mention is shade for the patio. No wonder, Dallas is hot. The placement of just the right tree in the right spot is needed to accomplish the goal. As the seasons change, so does the sun's location. You should consider what weeks of the year shade is most important along with what time of day the patio will be in use. Plant a tree that shades the patio at 6 pm in March and in June you may find that the patio is in shade at 4 pm while at 6 pm it's back in sun. Crown shape and height are important factors to consider, a greater height allowing for a greater distance, patio to tree. You might want to plant a fast growing tree close to the patio for shade over the next 5 years while a more substantial tree grows to a greater height further back in the landscape. All of this can be planed but first the true orientation of the yard must be known. This can be found by noting the time of day along with the date of observation that the sun aligns with the side fence. (example 5:38 on May 15).

Val, I thought you'd like that bedroom. This friend is very talented in doing childrens room. She has a son too. Actually everything I've seen that she's done is magnificent. She really should blog, but she's quite busy redoing an old home they just purchased. Now let me tell you first, that I'm pretty much the last person that would normally tell you to do this as I happen to be a wood lover. Love the grain, the varying wood tones and just hate the thought of painting good wood. Deep breath. When looking at the furniture you have for your daughter I would think very hard about painting this before buying something else to paint. The chest of drawers would be so darling painted aqua with glass knobs and pulls to replace the current hardware. All you'd have to do was sand it or use a liquid sander to dull the finish, prime and paint. The bed could be painted the same way maybe using glass door knobs as finials on the bed posts. You can find them online if you search discount glass doorknobs for a very reasonable price. The desk would be harder to give the look you are going for since it's a bit MCM in styling so I'd replace that, but maybe look for a pretty dressing table like the one my friend used that could serve as a desk with the mirror down and later as a dressing table. And again, the bookcase you have now, more likely a combination of cabinet quality oak plywood and solid oak, with a little added crown molding along with a decorative base would look great painted too. Annaglypta wallpaper for the back of the shelves would add a cute touch too. Talk to hubby, tell him a wood grain nut that was given the salutation of "ack don't paint that!" by friends who know her well, thinks it's not a bad thing to paint these items. If you were going to keep them for use elsewhere in your home it would be a different story, but since you'll be selling them anyway to someone else that might paint them, why go to the trouble of buying something old from someone else just to paint it and then have to turn around and hopefully make what you spent on the old stuff in selling your stuff. I hope that made sense. I should be in bed.

If that were my garden, I'd do the following. Well, at least the following would be my first draft. Then I'd rethink it eighteen more times. I should note that my own "plant plants with like needs together" rule tends to be mainly about water, because that's the limiting factor in my climate. My fertilizing tends to be a one-size-fits-all for every bed. So others with opinions about plant nutrition should usually be assumed to know more than me. :) Going clockwise starting with the top left bed: - I'd plant kale and chard in an 8-foot-long line down the center of the 8 X 3.5 half-sun bed. If I were going to let them get big, I'd plant a single row eighteen inches apart. If I were going to cut them young and let them resprout a couple of times, a double row eight to twelve inches apart in both directions. Then I'd run a row of cabbage down one side of them, and a row of bok choy down the other, at whatever spacing the seed packet wants. - I'd make the 3X3 bed (it's a half-sun bed, yes?) all salad greens, mostly lettuce. I wouldn't divide it into permanent squares. Instead, I'd buy lettuce starts and plant them one foot apart in both directions (starting six inches from the "wall" of the bed). Then I'd run quarter-inch soaker hose between the lettuces (so the soaker hose is running six inches from lettuce in each direction), I'd presprout lettuce seeds, and I'd plant them right next to the soaker hose so they get plenty of moisture to get started with. That would give me the first two rounds of lettuce. Then I'd probably be bored and would start playing with salad spinach, mache, pea sprouts, and so on. (If the little bed were in full sun, I would instead have devoted it entirely to carrots, so that I could cater to their prima donna carroty demands without distraction from other plants.) - I'd put a trellis down the center of both 8 X 4 full-sun beds, and grow peas up both sides of that trellis. In one bed, I'd plant leeks and onions and green garlic in a strip nearest the edges of the bed. In the other, I'd plant beets and radishes and carrots the same way. When the root crops come out, the peas may be taking up all the space. When the peas are done, it may or may not be a good time to plant fava beans in the whole bed. Continuing the "strip down the middle" theme, I'd plant three brussels sprout plants down the center of the 7 X 3.5 bed. I find young cabbage-family plants to be a little fragile, so I'd probably really plant groups of two or three, at the proper location, about three inches apart from one another, and then nip out all but one when it becomes fairly clear that one will survive. Then I'd plant spinach and arugula on the edges.

I'm a bit stymied. Dh asked dd what kind of bed she wants (sigh). She really wants a platform bed because it would be lower to the ground. She did fall out of bed while asleep a month or so ago and I'm sure that was startling/scary. Depsite the concerns about metal headboards not being as comfortable, that's what seems to work best in terms of not wanting white and wanting something that is flexible for future updates. So that would be my preference. And I'd rather not have a footboard for ease of making (and potential sleeping comfort in case taller people end up sleeping in the bed). This combination doesn't seem to exist. I have found metal platform beds, but they come with footboards. I can find metal headboards, but I can't tell from the descriptions whether they work with platform beds? Any thoughts? thanks!

My daughter had a captain's bed, that's a raised bed with drawers and shelves under it. We had a trundle bed growing up, which is a raised bed with another bed hidden under it. So, out of the choices you gave, I would choose a day bed with a trundle, although not necessarily a white one.

I slept in a twin bed until I got married when I was 27. And I'm 5'6 and at that time (and i wish again) about 140 lbs. So I think you'll be fine with a twin bed. I moved out and bought a three bedroom house and took with me my twin bed. A trundle would be nice when friends sleep over. But growing up my sister had a trundle and somehow it never got pushed back under the bed and would always become a huge mess, a dumping ground. Piled with school books, clothes, you name it! My 9 year old has a loft bed which I also hate because it's so hard to change the sheets. I can't wait for the day when he'll let me get him a regular twin bed for his room.

My dd is almost 13, and had a bunkbed (twin on the top, douible futon on the bottom) from the time she was three until she was about 11 - then she wanted rid of the bunkbed! Her room has a queen size bed in it because the room is large enough for it (and it is handy to have a n extra queen bed for company). In your case, I would go with the daybed + trundle, providing there is enough space to pull out the trundle.

I had a twin day bed from Sears (white iron with hearts, oh yeah) from when I was 10 until I was 27. I wanted a canopy but I remember when I got into high school I was glad I had the day bed. It also wasn't a big deal when I took it with me after college. I went to a king just before I got married, that was a nice change from the twin. It isn't bad to think ahead to high school and beyond unless you are planning on getting her something else at that time.

My girls had twin beds and couldn't wait to get out of them when they hit their later teens. My boys had bunks, first two twins, then a full/twin combo. They hated bunkbeds, but had to share a room. When they were able to have their own rooms, one kept the bunk, but only used the full, and the other boy started with a twin, but moved to a full later. Eventually they all moved to queensized.

I think that a trundle bed would be good. She can use it for sleep overs. So a day bed would work best. In my humble O, I would try to keep the bed neutral...say a simple wood framed bed rather than metal. Kids tastes change a lot over the years, and it's easier to change linens than it is to change the hardware.

Oh, one thing...both my girls confessed they'd always wanted a canopy bed when they were small (what girl didn't?) but when they grew up, the couldn't stand them.
