Design Plan Input Requested

Hi all,

I would love to get some input from you guys on my backyard design plan. This is the first time I've actually tried to plan out a design before going out and buying plants.

We just bought a new house and the backyard is almost a clean slate so I thought I'd do it right.

The following is some pertinent info:

Yard usage:

1. Outdoor cooking, playing with dogs, entertaining friends

2. Support growing select vegetable and herbs, either in pots or inter-planted in landscape

3. Compost  small self-contained barrel unit

Deficiencies:

1. Patio too small. Activities on larger patio: eating, separate seating area, small fire pit

2. Almost no existing landscaping

3. Need shade from west sun

Principles:

1. Native and adapted species to support bird, butterfly, and other wildlife

2. No pesticides

3. Low water requirements

Design Info:

Yard dimensions: 60Â w x 29Â deep from west fence to master bedroom wall and 40Â deep from west fence to back door

6Â board on board fence surrounds yard

Yard is currently all turf except where EXISTING is noted on the plan

West - Greenbelt - no rear houses. Full sun from noon  sundown.

East  Balance of 2-story house - shades majority of backyard until 11am.

Flower Colors:

Purple, pink, red w/pink undertones (current design). Plan to add blue and pastel yellow accents in flower colors.

Comment: red berries will be on many plants in winter but all flowers will be gone so no clash

I have the bones in place (Trees, shrubs and hardscape). I'd love to get some feedback on the design before continuing on and putting in the perennials.

Thanks for your input!

Lisa
