TGIF late 11-1-13

This weekend it's shopping for Deer Camp--stock up with fresh herbs/spices, worchestshire sauce, horseradish--pick up 50#s of potatoes & 25 # bag of onions, 1/2 bushel of apples, canned milk, canned tuna, canned Hormel Sausage hash-- already have a string of garlic bulbs, 6 # coffee, tea bags, sugar, picnic sets of S & P, canned corn beef, 5 #s bacon frozen & the cookies I'll bake before Doc heads out.-- everything else that's needed fresh will be picked up as needed using the "kitty" the 12 members contribute to when they get in.

And it's time for our monthly trip to Sauders --and we'll stop someplace for lunch-- a real treat as we've both been trying to drop some pounds-- Doc's lost 13.4 # & I've lost 8.2 in the last 2 wks.

No huge cooking plans. But on Sunday I might show daughter-San how to make sushi rolls. She is getting into sushi, quite a development since she used to hate fish. I only know how to make basic rolls and hand rolls, but that should be enough to start with.

Congrats on the weight loss, Diane! I have had such a sweet tooth lately I don't understand it. I typically do not care all that much for sweets. Maybe my juju is mis-aligned in the universe....I dunno.

No huge plans for the weekend. Time to make sure the snow plow is in tip-top shape (That's Tim's job this weekend)

The summer furniture and accessories are all put away, the gardens are all cut back, the warmer blankets are on all the beds. Sounds like it's time for Linda to take a break! Hmmmm....what shall I do with all this new found time?

Well, it's not SO cold here, about 18F, a high of 12F for tomorrow and Sunday, lows below zero. Snow today, tomorrow, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, LOL, welcome to Michigan! Good thing I love it. (grin) Woodie, I might bake some oatmeal cookies myself and take some to Dad. Yes, I take leftovers to Amanda and to Dad, LOL. Stacie, hug that new baby for me. At least your brother can call you! Pixiestix, you're colder than we are. Better bake something. Work on your next contest, or something.... Nancy, put on those sweats. Mine are Carhartts, nice and warm. Fashionable for Michigan too, LOL. Lori, I'll cheer for the Patriots, just for you. So, how much stuff do you have to cook to feed all those boys? Michael, you need a break, you're starting to sound a bit strained. Take care of yourself, will you? Diane, robins? Maybe they can wear some of those old sweaters. (grin) Pam, let's not talk about Christmas decorations, OK? I finally got the lights off the front porch and just realized this morning that I still have a Santa doormat in front of the door. Sigh. I'll be finding stuff until Easter. Maggie, better you than me on those blinds. I completely lack the decorator gene, I just paint everything white! Stacy, that's a good idea, check out camping cabins and think about summer. I love seeing those eagles, we have a pair that nest near the farm but they're elusive. Gina, Florida has better beaches? So I don't need to bring a swimsuit when I come to California? chase, I hope you only get snowed in with people you'd like to be snowed in with! Lee, you're right. Gina needs to post a foot shot... Linda, pile on the wood, it's going to be cold for a while. A bridal shower? You're getting married again? LOL I'm intending to use tomorrow as a cooking day. I want to make some meatballs for Amanda's freezer. (ground beef out of my freezer and into hers, and voila!! I might have some freezer space again) Orange marmalade is on the agenda too, peaches are 99 cents a pound at the grocery store, if they taste good, maybe some sugar free peach syrup for Dad's pancakes. Sunday is the farm and it'll be cold, so nothing will have been done. I'll need to bundle up to fill tanks and hay feeders, feed chickens, fill bird feeders. Monday I'm off work, it's one of those "government holidays". Amanda has Old Navy gift cards and there are 75% off sales right now, so I'm taking her shopping, then hitting Marshall's for dish shopping (like I need any) and then Chuck E. Cheese for lunch. Tuesday I'm still off work. Dad's having surgery on his "good leg", they're going to try to open up some veins to improve his circulation. He's got some diabetic ulcers that won't heal and he's having problems with the artificial knee in that leg. Sigh. He has to be in Grand Rapids at 5:30 a.m. and wants me to drive him, so I have to be at his house at 4 a.m. elery is taking a vacation day from work to come along and keep me company (and keep my sister and stepmom from driving me insane, LOL). So, clink to everyone here, and think some good thoughts for Dad, if you will be so kind. Annie

Happy Friday Friends! May, great movie! I know you and the boys will love it. Sharon, OMG you have a TON of tomatoes! Are you making chile sauce from all of them or will some be canned in other manners? I can;t even imagine making so many batches of chile sauce in a row..... Mom - Many thanks to your DS and to you for raising such a great kid. We are all in debt. Duane - good luck. It sounds like the attack of the killer tomatoes! Jessy - good luck indeed! I helped with the food for the combines 18th B-day/graduation party earlier this summer.. OMG what an ordeal! Claire - good luck with the staining David! Water balloons! OMG Now I knwo what will be the perfect ending to our first annual "smokefest" this Labor Day weekend. I am going to bombard the entire party with water balloons! That is BRILLIANT!!!!! Everyone else have a great weekend... you deserve it! We have another action packed weekend - today was lunch with a GF and her kids, that turned into afternoon cocktails at my house while we watched our 11-12 yo Little League Team destroy another team in the semis to move into the Mid-Atlantic finals to be held on Monday night (on ESPN2 against Toms River, NJ who we beat by 1 in the regular season) It was so great to see our boys win by 10 in the 4th inning (Mercy rule) and move on to the finals. Tomorrow is another friends Family Olympics - basically an afternoon of Minute to Win It type challenges with gag gifts for prizes. In actuality, an excuse to eat and drink too much while watching other make complete fools of themselves. I chose wisely and will be an "official judge" this year so I can be pretty sure there will be no incriminating evidence on Youtube. Sunday is our towns first annual Musicfest. There will be 15 live bands, food vendors, beer & wine, crafts and other stuff on this big farm outside of town..... we"ll see how that goes. Hope everyone has a wonderful and safe weekend! Alexa

This TGIF thread is a new thing for me. Maybe I wasn't here when it was done before. Saturday I have to get up at 5 am and drive to Salem to judge at a high school Speech & Debate tournament all day, then drive a carful of kids including my daughter, back to the school. DD is really into S&D so we have to be driver, judge and sometimes chaperone for several weekends a year, and I'm just "lucky" this was my turn. Sunday I haven't figured out. I will probably take a bike ride in the morning. The leaves are turning here, and it is pretty in our urban parks. There is a local park, rather grandly named "Mount" Tabor, that is covered with big trees, grassy fields, scenic slopes, and a road that spirals to the top of the "mountain" (shhh, it is really just a hill). My usual choice for a quick Sunday ride is to cycle over to Tabor, ride from the bottom to the top, zoom to the bottom, then repeat, over and over. This is called "hill laps" and is sort of like doing reps in a gym, but a beautiful green foresty gym with sweet fresh air. I will be done by mid-morning and then go home and do some cooking. If I feel like more riding and less cooking, I might cycle over to Forest Park which is the largest urban park in the country. This is miles and miles of dense northern rainforest, trails and dirt roads twisting among ferns and mossy old trees. This would be incredible mountain bike terrain, except that bikes are restricted to the dirt roads, but those are reasonably fun too. A friend lives by there, maybe he'll ride with me and then we can have a coffee at the best French bakery in town, St Honores. Or, there is a mountain biking area I haven't been to yet, a not-too-long drive from my house, and now that my van is finally running, I might take the mountain bike out there to check it out. This weekend will be one of the last nice ones in Portland, so mustn't let it go to waste. The next time I take a Sunday ride, it'll be with a rain jacket and neoprene gloves. I did one of those a couple weeks ago, when it rained two inches that weekend. Just a few laps on Tabor felt suspiciously like self-harm, so I high tailed it for home where it took an hour in a blanket by the fire to take the chill off. Toolbelt ( neat handle!!) I can't speak for the States but in Canada the homeless are almost always mentally ill or addicts. They resist any type of shelter provided to them. Even temporary shelter when it is bitter cold. They are paranoid and distrustful. Another large segment are runaway children that have left incredibly abusive homes. These kids are a bit easier to get to and persuade to take the help that is available. Many years ago the laws were changed so that no person could be held in any type of facility against their will. The hospitals for the mentally disabled were shut down with little or now support put in it's place. It's truly a tragic situation. Part of me says these people should be sheltered for their own well being and another part says they are entitles to live as they "choose" Anyhow, this is a real twist and turn for TGIF but perhaps a good one in that we all need to open our eyes to the unfortunate circumstances of others,

Diane, I was wondering where you were when I didn't find a TGIF thread. It sounds like you've had enough to do, though, and some days I just forget which day it really is anyway.

John, good luck on the sushi lesson. I finally learned to make some passable sushi, after much practice, I could have used a tutor. I keep thinking how much Aunt Amy/Yoshiko could have taught me, if I'd only had sense to pay attention while she was alive.

Here we're having a birthday party for Bud and Makayla, so I spent the day baking and decorating "camo" birthday cakes. The party is tomorrow, on Amanda's birthday, so I made her a vegetable pizza with "Happy Birthday Amanda" spelled out in red peppers. It'll be her favorite birthday "cake" ever, I think.

We had 40 MPH winds yesterday and last night, poor trick or treaters, so Sunday I'll have to check the fence for downed trees and I'm sure that slightly loose piece of tin over the hay shed is now very loose, or maybe gone. That'll have to be repaired.

Clinking with a Diet Coke....

Congrats indeed Diane! I think I have gained 7 of the lbs you lost :-( Definitely time for me to get back into a walking/running routine. This darn work thing keeps getting in the way of doing important stuff.

Linda, good for you for having all the gardens tucked in for the winter... I still need to do a lot of clean-up, maybe tomorrow.

Annie - sending Happy Birthday wishes to all - sounds like a lot of fun celebrating this weekend!

John - good luck with the sushi lessons!

It is Breeder's Cup weekend, and I think younger son and I will go to the track to watch a couple of live races and a few simulcast ones on Saturday.

Sunday a local celeb/jazz guitarist is back from his long summer tour so we may go listen to some kicking jazz/blues at a local restaurant/pub. Or we may just stay home and watch football - I am fine with either!

Not a lot planned in the way of cooking this weekend, I have some apples that need to be used, thinking of trying my hand at pie.... again. Other than that - figuring out what to do with 20+lbs of Halloween Candy.

The kids are off school on Monday and Tuesday so it is truly a long weekend for the boys.

Not late...it's a one-day weekend for me. It's windy, rainy, thundering and supposed to snow. Studded tires are on, garden's put to bed...bring it on, lol.

Tomorrow will be a good day to hole up and putter. I need to do something with the last of the tomatoes and a box of beets and leeks that I totally forgot about. There's a few tomatillos and peppers left. I think I'll make a pot of posole.
