Best Foam to use for dining room chairs

I plan to recover my dining room chairs and need to find some quality foam to use. These are "traditional" wood chairs with an upholstered seat. I've used the green high-density foam from Joann's in the past and it did not hold up very well. My kitchen is too small for a table, so we use the dining room chairs all the time, and just not for eating - homework, paperwork, newspaper reading, etc.

Where could I find some better foam? Another store told me that they had something much better but the snotty salesperson said to me: "But we couldn't just let YOU carry it out of the store, I can't let you buy it, you could only have it if WE did them custom". (You'd think a place called Calico Corners would be a little less pretentious).

I always use the blue HD foam and I get it from a local upholstery/fabric shop.

You can get outdoor fabrics (like Sunbrella) in a lot more patterns than you might think. I was impressed with our local fabric store's selection last time I was there. You might check that out. We have a window seat/banquette in our kitchen and the seat cushion is covered in a dark red/green blend chenille, and although I guess we haven't had any major spills, the seat is about 5 years old and still looks good as new. I thought we'd need to recover it every couple of years, and I'm actually disappointed that it looks so good because I'd love an excuse for a change! ;)

Blubird - Yes, the big difference between a mushroom and a box cushion is how tight you pull the liner BEFORE you staple on the decor fabric. You will need a staple gun and a helper. Do the center of each side, then work out to the corners by adding two staples towards the corners on each of the 4 sides. Keep the number of staples per side equal and keep checking the grain to keep it straight. You can also cut a small bevel out of the edges of the foam to make the rounding a bit easier.

Beautiful room! I love the combination seating you have but if you decide to not use the bench for some reason then I would suggest 2 more black Windsor side chairs and just use the parsons at the head and foot of the table. I have white upholstered chairs at the head and foot of my RH salvaged pine trestle table and wood side chairs with slips only on the seats. I love this look - the linen slips are a nice, soft contrast to the rustic table. I was also considering black Windsor side chairs for my table but wasn't sure and then found my chairs on sale at Shabby Chic. I fell in love with them because they're so pretty but DH is not a fan due to comfort. He would have preferred the Windsor chairs. Looking at your photos, I can see they would have looked great! Can you share where you found your sign and clock hanging on the walls? I need to find some interesting wall decor!

For comfortable flow around the dining set while in use there should be 48 inches from the table to the wall.

this may sound crazy but-
when I needed a cushion made for my daughter's window seat the seamstress that made the cushion cover recommended that I get the foam cut and made by a company that makes cushions for boats. It is 6 years later and although she uses the seat daily it is still great.

Thanks for the replies. I am wondering if the blue foam is better than the green? What is it called?

Nanny, thanks for the link. Do people usually buy a big piece and cut it to the correct size?

I suppose I want 2" thick?
