Would you buy a Toyota now?

DH is in the market for a new car. His car is old, but still doing okay, so no rush. He liked a Lexus that he saw, but isn't sure if he would want to buy a Toyota product right now? I'm not sure if I want to mess with them either. We've always been Honda customers but our townhouse garage is very short and an Accord won't fit in his side (ARGH!)

So with all the Toyota recalls right now, would you buy one? I've heard reports of people getting them fixed and still having the same gas pedal sticking problem!! I'd be scared of not trusting the "fix" everytime I drove?

We've also looked at the Volvo S40? or 60 whichever one is the smaller sedan. Anyone own one of those? Can't stand when car companies number instead of name their cars! I can't keep them straight!

I would definitely NOT trust a Toyota or Lexus, new or used. Models that had problems have not all been recalled. Cars that were supposedly fixed still have problems. Congressional hearings of Toyota are not pretty.

I have a Lexus GX 460 and I'm trading it in on a new one next month. I don't think Toyota is any worse than any other manufacturer.

I like the Alero. To me it looks like the new Dodge Avenger, which I also like. Try to find a four-cylinder, if you can. Not only will it get better gas mileage, but the four-cylinder in that car does not produce much less power than the V6, and it's a good engine. The V6 is not bad, but that series of GM engines has intermittent problems with intake gasket leaks, which is not an insanely expensive problem, but obviously you'd rather not have it. As for the other mechanical problems you have referred to, I am not sure what you mean. Most of the parts in the car went into a lot of other models; they are probably not the absolutely most reliable things you could get, but they're common. The car's powertrain is pretty solid, especially with the four-cylinder. The 4T40/45 series automatic transmission is one of the cheapest to replace, and it's one of the more reliable ones out there. I like Saabs, as well. They're different and just "quirky" enough that you're not driving something that's like everything else on the road. On the plus side, many have been owned by people who are relatively well off, including car enthusiasts who appreciate the car for what it is, and these types of people usually take good care of their cars. (This same factor, in reverse, probably accounts for a big percentage of the share of reported problems with less expensive cars, such as the Alero: People buy them as workhorses, treat them as such, and they have more problems.) One downside with the Saab is it has a turbo, which I am not fond of in older cars you want to keep a while, as it's an expensive thing to replace, tends to put the engine under more stress, and it makes oil changes crucial. (The heat of a turbocharger will turn oil into sludge very quickly if oil changes are let go.) So if you buy one, I'd want to see maintenance records showing frequent oil changes -- preferably more often than the minimum owner's manual requirement. One other thing about the Saab is make sure you have a dealer that's not too far away. Their dealer network is not that large, and some people who live in small towns might be 100 miles or more from a dealer. Everyone I've ever talked to who has owned a Saab says the dealers are great, they really know the cars, and that's ideally where you'd want to have it worked on. But if there's no dealer anywhere nearby, that could be a problem. In fact, if I were thinking of a used Saab, I'd probably take it to the dealer before buying it to have it inspected and use that as an opportunity to introduce myself to them and get a feel for whether you'd want to deal with them.

It's hard to deal with these questions in isolation. You have to know the affected person's financial situation, what their objectives are, how and when they plan to use their money, etc. Generally speaking, unless you have a long time horizon until you reach retirement age, say, at least 10 years, I think you should think in terms of "wealth preservation" rather than "wealth accumulation." That means don't expect any large increase in your nest egg. Try to hold on to what you have and to get the best use out of it. To return to the original question in this thread, I still think that buying I bonds right now is probably not a good idea. We bought some about 6 years ago, when their base rate was 2% plus the inflation part that is adjusted every 6 months. For quite a while, it paid a reasonable interest. Now the inflation part pays zero, but we still get 2% because the base part does not change. So we're keeping it because the interest will get adjusted upwards when inflation reappears. I hope it doesn't spike too high. Back in the early 1980s (or late 70s), to fight inflation that got out of control, the Fed raised interest rates sky high, so investing in CDs was a no-brainer. They paid better than any stocks. There were 20 year CDs that paid over 10%. Only time will tell if that happens again. I hope not.

marti8a- I have a Pfaff Quilt Expressions 2048. It sews beautifully, but only has a shorter throat & one light. The replacement was the Quilt Expressions 3.0 & more expensive 4.0 which has had some sort of computer problem, which I believe upgrades fix these earlier problems. I bought the 2048 at a tremendously discounted price because it was no longer the current model.I am very happy with it. Using a single hole needle plate improved the stitch quality, and takes care of the need to use leaders. The wide slot in the needle plate is what causes the fabric to jam in the beginning. The wide slot is required for the decorative stitches. I read your other post - you really cannot compare the low end $200-$300 range to the upper end machines. My Pfaff dealer and I talked about this last week. They are trying to capture the market share they are losing to the "Walmarts" by offering entry level machines that are made elsewhere to be competitive. I don't think you are comparing them, I just wanted to encourage you not to keep the cheaper machine you bought on impulse if it does not fit your needs. I guess I'm trying to say your buyers remorse is justified. Hard decision.

As I said in my original post, our Mannington Adura is glue-down. The flooring company we used refuses to do a click-lock on LVP installs. Period. If a customer insists upon click-lock they will sell them the flooring materials but will not do the install. They said they have had too many complaints with click lock installs and it just was not worth the trouble for them. If you read install instructions for almost any flooring, having a level floor is critical. All of the mfgs specify their tolerances for uneven subflooring and they're mostly all very tight (narrow) ranges. I think a lot of DIYers forget or don't pay much attention to that. We had to, our flooring joists are wildly uneven and no free-floating floor would have worked.

No - but I wouldn't have bought one before, either.

But, there isn't a car made that can't have problems -
parts come from all over - and, of course the man and machines that are building the
cars are far from perfect.

Unless we could get Henry Ford to come back and build
them one at a time for us. :)

Yes, I would buy a Toyota. Every car manufacturer has had recalls (Chevy Cobalt just last Tuesday), Toyota has had the least recalls of the bigger auto companies.

Like I said on the last thread, the right model for the right price when I needed a vehicle, of course I'd buy one.

All vehicles have recalls. Some SHOULD have been recalled and weren't, like the exploding Pintos, the exploding Ford school busses, what is it about Ford and exploding vehicles?

When you look at the numbers, this isn't a big thing. But there are paranoid people that won't buy it since it's in the headlines. I expect they're not going to fly either because a plane crashed one time or another. Except maybe Rainman's Quantas.

Say what you want about Toyota, but I've never heard another company bigwig actually apologize to their customers and essentially ensure additional lawsuits. I think that showed class.

My last 2 car purchases have been Toyota Corollas. Never had any problems with brakes, acceleration,etc. Of course, they were 2003 and 2004 models, not part of the recent recall.

Some say that they think that there's an extra big fuss being made in the U.S. (and Canada) these days partly due to the straits in which the domestic manufacturers are navigating ... can anyone say, "Government Motors"?

I've driven several brands over the years, and find that there are good ones and bad ones of differing varieties. I want to have whatever used vehicle that I'm considering checked over carefully by a skilled mechanic before I buy it.

Being happy with my 23-year-old Mazda ... I'd rather buy a Mazda, as they're a quality car ... and not nearly as expensive, especially used, as the more highly touted Ts and Hs have been.

Well, DH just might. He decided, to check them out. Both Toyota, and Honda.

He drives a mini van, without most seats. He/we use it mostly to haul our bicycles, including this long one. ;)

I had a 1998 Toyota Camry until it was totalled in 2007. I loved it, and it showed no signs of aging. When I had to replace it, I got a 2007 Honda Accord. It's okay. It's more sporty than I'm used to, but I've not had any major problems with it. If I had to do it over, I would get another Camry.

We are looking at a minivan for our next vehicle, and will probably go with the Toyota Sienna over the Honda Odessey.

But we are presently renting a Toyota Camry from Hertz.

I bought my first Toyota in October, and it is one of the cars that was recalled. No, I would not buy another one now, and no, I am not paranoid. I am getting on a plane on Saturday though.

No - I've had quite a few Toyotas but I really prefer Hondas which is what I have now. I would get another Honda of some sort.

Our newest car is a 2009 Prius and my husband thinks it's the best car we ever had. We haven't had American cars since the 70's . He's had one Mercedes and three Lexus before the Prius, and I have had Nissan Maximas. Love them but must say you can't beat the 45-50mpg the Prius gets and it's very comfortable. We've hauled big pine trees in it. It's in the recall and will soon go in the shop.

Yes---and I just did yesterday.

Mike and I own a Toyota Tacoma (2005) and we love it. We have no issues, no recalls on it, except the floor mat thing, but we had already put in all weather mats, so the issue was not one.

I had a 2005 Subaru Outback Limited and with the new baby coming, we found that car to be very tight.

I purchased a 2008 Toyota Highlander yesterday. It's a smoother ride than my Outback, tons of room, and even for a base model, it has tons of features (heated seats, sun roof, 3rd row seating).

My parents own a 1990 Celica with 150K miles on it. All they've ever had to do is an oil change.

With that being said, Toyota is offering tons of incentives on new cars right now, but I recommend buying a 2008 model if you want. Most of the body styles changed in 2008 and are still what they are making in the 2010 model.

Teresa---I'm coming to Lorton next Saturday if you want to check out our Highlander. It's perfect for a family of 4 (and our 2 big dogs). :)

I wouldn't buy a toyota and I also wouldn't buy a GMC or Chrysller. I always like GMs. Wouldn't buy one now. I see Ford is doing well. I wasn't ever that crazy about them, but if I bought a new one, would probably buy a Ford, but I wouldn't buy a new vehicle anyway.

Funny...right now I have a Dodge, my husband has a GM and my daughter has a Toyota. All have been excellent.

Would you buy a Toyota now?
