how many plants are you 'holding over' right now?? -- newbie hint
Comments (39)Too many. I had to remove plants from a large holding bed and don't have new beds to put them in as it has been too cool & wet or hot & wet here all summer to make new beds. And just where will I put a long bed for lilies, daylilies and mums/asters? More will be potted up when we redo the driveway this fall but those will go back into the same beds. Other plants are being removed as beds are reconfigured due to construction of a new deck late last fall. Visitors took home 6 plants today and I have more to give away or sell this fall....See MoreWhat do you know right now that you will plant next season?

I did exactly what you did, this past Sunday! Okay to be honest I don't put them in a binder but instead I sloppily throw them all into a large clear ziploc bag or two with the date 2013 very visible on both sides of the bag. I staple the appropriate tag to its receipt, for the more expensive perennials (and this year for the few pricey Japanese Maples I acquired). I decided to count these tags and I am shocked to say that there were almost 100! (I hope my partner does not find this particular post as I will never hear the end of it)...See MoreMoving shrubs this fall - how to prepare now?
Comments (1)Root cuts now are a good idea, unless they are flowering and you want to get fruit. if so, wait till after they develop fruit. Cutting them back with care is also a really good idea. Depending on whether individual species set buds early or late, you may lose next season's flowering/fruiting on a shrub or two. But it's the best way to make the things safe to move, and help them thrive afterwards....See MoreWould you build right now?
Comments (22)IF you can control the money so you're never risking much in case a builder or subcontractor goes under. IF you have a truly good builder who's financially sound. IF you can afford it without stretching yourself thin. IF you know enough about construction, contracts, law, etc to know whether you're being scammed or not (or know competent experts in these fields who are going to assist you). Then this could be a good time to build. I'd avoid the tract-type builders who have a well deserved reputation for cutting corners and steering buyers to their lender in what can be, shall we say, not the best arrangement for the buyer. IMO, don't build if you are thinking of the house as an investment--build only as a place to live, a place you'll really like and stay in for a long time. I think housing prices have a ways to fall before they're low enough for people to start buying/selling easily again, and if we're lucky this country will never repeat the inflated prices game again. A benefit to paying as you go in home construction is that when you're done you have little or no mortgage. Reducing the amount of money you risk by financing it would be a huge benefit right now, at a time when more and more mortgage fraud is being uncovered, including by 'big trusted companies.' IMO that's the only way I'd do it again, especially in this market, is if my risk was extremely minimal, and I didn't have to rely on much financing. Many builders are experiencing a slow down, so I suspect the really good ones will weather this economy because someone's always building, and the best builders will probably get what work there is. A lot of fly by night builders, as well as those who were big but not very trustworthy, may fall. They should. Unloading a building lot right now could be hard. I doubt there is a person in this country that's not going to suffer at least some pain due to the housing bubble and it's predictable pop, plus all the related economic issues. I feel the KEY here is to have a good builder. If you end up with a quality house you can enjoy for years that's going to put you way ahead of the people in shabby new houses that were artificially overpriced, any day. Good luck whatever you decide....See Morenemiractfairfieldcountyzn7a
