Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Wishing you, your family and friends a very Happy Thanksgiving. I feel very thankful for everything that I have, including all of you as my friends. I thank you so much for the many recipes that you have taken time to post, that I have enjoyed making throughout the 7 months that I've been a Cfer.

We will go to our DD's tomorrow as she has a much bigger house than I do. I made Annie's Honey Wheat Bread, Linda C's Cranberry Jezebel, Sweet Potatoes with caramelized onions and Scalloped Sweet Potatoes(not sure whose recipes those are.) I was going to make Lou's braided bread but didn't have his correct recipe. Everyone is bringing something and my DD's DH is frying a turkey and also baking one. There will be about 20 people as she invites both sides of the family. One of our sons will not be with us as he and his wife have traveled to South Carolina to be with her family.

For the first time in years I am not cooking! Having been unemployed for 19 months, I am temping for my former employer and if I don't work I don't get paid. In years past I would take Wednesday off and start the preparation. This year two other sisters are stepping in, taking today off to prep and others are contributing side dishes. I just need to bake the bread tomorrow and show up!

Yay - I am glad to have a job! Best to all of you for this holiday. I hope you all have much to be thankful for!

Teresa, It's wonderful that you have a job. 19 months is a long time to be unemployed (if you don't want to be.) My DH and I retired 1 year ago and I can't imagine having a job now. However, I did work for 40 years. That's long enough.

Thanks for the greeting Belle. Hope your day was yummy and cozy. We had a really nice time together and lots of yummy food too. Even slipped on our sweaters and took a walk afterwards--kinda chilly in So. Calif. I was really tired yesterday, not used to being on my feet so much and being so busy anymore! I still need to stash a few platters and bowls in the big cabinet above the fridge--wasn't feeling like climbing up on the step stool yesterday. Tollpeggy, I'm planning on doing my turkey soup today, that's my favorite way to use up the leftover turkey too. Also need to gather up all my fall decorations and get them stashed in their bins and back in the shed. Then it will be time to pull out all the Christmas bins--didn't I just do that???? Seems like the years roll by faster and faster! I've got lots of projects earmarked to paint, will need to get busy and "git r done". Sure wish I had a painting buddy to sit and chat with while I paint, that would make it even more fun. Guess I'll have to settle for putting on the Christmas cd's won't I? Enjoy your weekend. Luvs

Josh, they are similar sauces I suppose, I make the burnt caramel by starting with just white sugar in a heavy bottom wide pan and letting it melt, swirl/tilt pan (don't stir!) until it smokes for a half minute or so, it's really a read the color type thing after you've made it a few times. Then carefully whisk in heavy cream and then butter. I often add a split vanilla bean, and on occasion bourbon. Always have an ice water bowl within reach, it's very dangerous at around 350F!!! I knew someone that accidentally dipped his fingers in making a croquembouche. I enjoy deviled eggs too, they sound amazing with your homemade smoked paprika! Ohh you add lemon juice, brilliant! I'm going to try that sometime this week, I have plenty of eggs on hand (cheesecakes take a lot!) and newly opened jar of mayonnaise. Besides setting a timer for hard boiled eggs, I use one of those silicon color changing egg thermometer gadgets, love it. That's awesome you found someone, you sound very happy :) She's a lucky gal, as it's great when the guy can cook well and grow their own veggies!! ___ Bob, fantastic holiday decor. I love that massive store fireplace! Wow! That's my cup of tea, I would live in a stone castle, medieval style or Victorian style home over all this cookie cutter crap that they build nowadays. Ohh and great looking steak n' shrimp! This weekend I had that but much smaller at a Vietnamese restaurant in a bowl of Bún (rice vermicelli with homemade fish sauce). ____ Mike, it's so dark out! Think I may cave and buy 1 or 2 lights for the racks. Yep, Xmas will be here too soon, I keep it pretty simple and minimalist. How much stuff do people that already have stuff really need? I got my dad two used CD's from Savers, a Jackson Browne and Johnny Cash. That reminds me, I should make sure they play with out skipping. I got myself an old Celine Dion album too. I don't want to put up and decorate the Xmas tree. I can just see my crazy little kitty climbing through it with all those wires and then knocking it over. Really it is just more stress for me. ____ Jenny, I will look for your thread later, the red lime is intriguing and tempting! John, you sure have an eclectic group there. I hope your Pescatarian and Mike did manage to create some sparks, and I'm sure everything was delicious although I had to pause at the brie cheese gelato, and I'm still thinking about that. I suppose it was good, because many times brie is served with sweet, like that brie and fruit in crust thing... Dcarch, I hope you enjoyed your dinner and are still around to talk about it, romaine is sure getting some bad press lately. Brad, your dinner sounds perfectly festive, although I do like turkey and I'd rather have sweet potatoes than the traditional mashed white ones. I also LOVE creamed onions, yum. Although your group was small, it's always nice to have family together. Momj47, I'd forgotten about that picture, and it still made me smile. Happy Thanksgiving! gardengal, I hope you get your Yorkshire puddings soon. And just think, you really can eat them all yourself. (grin) Makes it all worthwhile.... sleevendog, it was cold here too, didn't make record cold, which is 7F, but it made it down to 12F. We spent about an hour outside setting hay and repairing a hay feeder and coaxing the very cold tractor to start, and that was enough. I don't blame you for skipping the parade, a week outside is more than sufficient in this weather. Because our family dinner will be on Saturday we had chickpea flour waffles and a venison stirfry, definitely not the traditional Thanksgiving Day meal but still better than I had anticipated. Happy Thanksgiving to all my American friends. Our T-Day was 6 weeks ago so I am eating turkey dinner vicariously through all of you.

Have a wonderful day, enjoy each other and I just know that all the birds whether high heat, low heat, brined, grilled, smoked, deep fried or store bought will be just perfect becasue they are shared with those you love.

Happy Thanksgiving to all!

I am going to DD's and taking Cornbread Dressing, Giblet Gravy, some Ham, Cranberry Jezebel and Spinach Madeleine. Others will be making other things and bringing. DD will cook the turkey, Bread Pudding with Jack Daniels Sauce and and I don't know what else and there are two more adults to bring everything else. Sounds like a feast to be thankful for to me!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Most of us are under winter weather advisories and the news said to leave tonight if you're going away for Thanksgiving. Drive safe and eat hearty!

On the menu at our place:
Roast duck and chicken
Stuffing
Mashed potatoes
Corn
Noodles
Pumpkin pie

Here's a beverage that mom's been serving since I can remember: Hawaiian Punch mixed with Squirt soda! They used to make a Ruby Red Squirt but I haven't seen it in years. Anyone ever try it? It's refreshing!

Mom and I aren't feeling too well (We talked to my sister on the phone,and she said there's something going around) but we'll pull through. It'll be a small gathering at least three of us (mom, dad and I) and maybe my uncle if the weather's good enough (a small possibility) but still I look forward to the meal!

I am not cooking the main meal this year either for the first time in a long, long time. We'll go to my Sis-in-laws's around 3:00 or so. Dinner is "scheduled" for 4:00 so we'll probably eat around 5:00. LOL

I'll have a nice, relaxing morning in the kitchen, maybe a nap before we go. Ahhhhh....
Four days off work is nice too. I'll cook my own turkey on Friday or Saturday just for DH and I.....and the freezer. It's a 25 pounder!

I am bringing a broccoli salad, margiene's Spicery Rolls, cranberry orange sauce, Pumpkin pie and Habanero Gold with cream cheese and crackers for snackin'.

I am truly thankful to have such bounty to share and loved ones to share it with.

Just the two of us, but we still make a feast. We'll get up late and cook during the afternoon and eat around seven. Turkey, plain sage bread stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, white sweet potatoes, brussel sprouts, creamed carrots, dinner rolls [I don't eat them with my meal but Christy does and I like a sandwich on them], MY favorite jellied cranberry sauce, olives, pumpkin pie and chocolate pie. That should take care of us for a while. LOL. The brussel sprouts have been my choice of veg for the day since I was a kid and our family always made creamed carrots on Thanksgiving and Christy loves them so I'll make a few. It's fun to have a little of a lot of things. I think that's partly what makes Thanksgiving so much fun as a meal. We like to use several small plates. One for the 'gravy stuff', the turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy. Then a veggie plate and finally a small plate with the the condiments: cranberry sauce and green and black olives. Eat some of the gravy plate, then to the condiments for some cranberry, then to the veggies...lol.. Fun. That's what a feast is all about.

Brad, Christy loves Hawaiian Punch and I get it for her once in a while. I remember squirt but not a ruby red one. Bet it was good!

Hope the day finds everyone happy and healthy, and full of love. Be careful driving, if the weather is iffy.

For the ones not doing the cooking/hosting this year, relax, put your feet up and revel in watching the others do the work!

All this talk about turkey this week has made be want one. Like Chase mentioned, ours is in October. Think I'll roast a chicken this weekend. Unless anyone would like to send me some of their leftovers?

Make some wild rice with that chicken!

Good thing my family does not eat till 4:00. The first rolls I baked are not quite perfect!

Happy Thanksgiving all!!!!

We'll be going to SIL for a meal around 2:30 (early so the men can go deer hunting).

By request, I'm taking green beans and dressing. Just to prove I can cook other things (smile), I'm also taking Katiec's sweet potato and caramelized onion casserole, a cranberry walnut relish from MasterCoo... has orange marmalade in it, and ice cream pie with strawberries.

Years ago when I used to play cards with a group,at one of my friends houses, she served the ice cream pie and we all went ga-ga over it. Crust is 2 1/2 T. butter, melted and 1/2 C chopped pecans. Mix and spread in pie dish to form the crust. Bake 12 minutes at 350 degrees. Chill and fill with 1 pt. of softened vanilla ice cream. Freeze until a few minutes before you serve. Top slices with fresh or frozen strawberries when ready to serve.

Again, a happy Thanksgiving to all as we gather to count our many blessings.

I'm grateful for all the good advice I've received here and for the wonderful sense of community and friendship that exists in the CF. I hope to lurk less and participate more in the coming year.

This will be the coldest Thanksgiving Minnesota has had in more than 20 years. I ran out to the mailbox to get my paper and my lungs hurt. Fifteen days ago it was 75 degrees and I was canoeing. The windchill is MINUS 8 today with the sun shining. I am glad I did not sign up to run the Thanksgiving Day 5K in downtown Minneapolis. I need more time to adjust to these cold temps!

No Lou - I don't feel guilty for just baking the bread. I am enjoying this day, lounging around, baking bread and finishing a website. Especially because in years past I would use a vacation day on Friday to recover from the two days of cooking. There are no vacation days when you are a temp!

I shared the snow with Alexa. I was so surprised to look out the window and see snow flurries! That's the first I can ever remember snow in Philadelphia on Thanksgiving. It's gone now but the weather is unusually cold.

I will be heading over to Mom's soon. My brother (and his two cockatoos) are here from CA and my niece, her husband and two sons are coming up from NC. My younger son lives nearby so he will be there, too, so that's eight total. We used to have a much bigger crowd but as the kids grew up and had families of their own, not everyone ends up in the same place at the same time. We always eat at regular supper time.

Sometimes I forget that Thanksgiving is only an American holiday! Funny.

Happy Thanksgiving to all. I'm also glad to be enjoying Thanksgiving virtually with all of you. Max went to our DIL's parents home, two hours away, bearing cranberry relish, cranberries baked with port, the best roast veggies we've ever made (loads of fennel, red onion, Brussels sprouts and carrots dressed with olive oil, dijon, balsamic vinegar, a little honey and some herbs)and two bottles of wine. Max did a most of the work, I washed my hands a lot and tried to help.

I'm at home coughing and sneezing uncontrollably - really rotten timing - but I'm glad he went. He'll come home with turkey and sides for me for tomorrow and we have a four day weekend. Then only four more workdays and he retires, we are both happy about that.

Pies: Pecan, Bob Andy and Pumpkin

Thanks to all who have given advise on making the pie crust. The crust just get better every year!
To me the best part of the meal is the pecan pie!

Happy Thanksgiving y'all! I just got back from a walk at the beach, with a stop at a very packed Starbucks for a chai. Absolutely gorgeous California weather today (sorry Theresa!)

stuffed turkey is in the oven and smells heavenly. I should make turkey more often, it's too easy and I love it.
