Furniture Arrangement & Is This Chair Ugly? :)

Okay - I'm a rocker. I love to rock and desperately miss my rocking recliner. We banished it to the basement when we moved and purchased new furniture. Last night, I begged my husband to move it upstairs just to "see."

See?

What do you think? Does it stick out like a sore thumb? Too many greens? Too ugly overall? Should I move it somewhere else instead? And of course, please give me your opinions on ANYTHING else (seriously). I know I need something on *that* wall. But what?

To be honest, it really doesn't "go" with the room. BUT...I wouldn't give up a favorite snuggly chair for anything in the world. Especially when there's a little one in the room who looks like they might enjoy the rocker just as much as their Mama does. :o) Leave it where it is and keep on rockin'!

I don't think it looks bad and I agree with persnickety that I would never give up my comfy chair just for looks. What do you think about swapping the leather chair with the recliner and then maybe put a nice throw over it when you aren't sitting in it. That way, you would see the leather chair facing you when you first walk through the door?? Just a thought. I think it looks fine either way.

johnatemp, you're right, I don't want to move the tv. That alcove next to the fireplace is really too small for the tv. Besides, there are cables coming from all over the house that get wired to the stereo that is with the tv. I had thought many times that I would like to make the area where the eating area is move of a lounge area. There are really too many doors in that area to make it a very cozy area. I have another area next to the kitchen that I'm doing that instead (and bigger). I have thought about removing the leaf in the table to make it smaller to fit the space better. Most of the time there is only 4 of us eating. Chris, the rug is situated the same way it was in the old location. I have it setting back a bit so that the lamp cord can hide under it and remove the trip hazard. I like the idea of the sofa table under the window. That statue is over 50 lbs, so I need help with that one (and we were in a hurry to go furniture shopping). I got some pretty good ideas while I was out. I'm thinking instead of a sectional, maybe an oversized chair with a couch or love seat? Either way, I'll only have seating for about 4 people (the corner in a sectional is pretty lost). I did find a curved sectional I liked, but it still only seated 4. I'm going to work on the end where the chair and ottoman are along with the table and chairs to see if I can come up with some more room. I'll take some more pictures and post when I'm done to see what you think. Also, any light recommendations for the table where the recliners are? I'd like to have something that doesn't sit on the table, but still worked as task lighting. The guys do play chess there frequently, so I need something that doesn't sit on the table, but will still give hoof task light. You're also right, Chris. I'm trying to get away from the log or cabin feel, and more or a transitional feel and try to accessorize with our horse "stuff". Robbi

Is there a reason the chair has to be on that side of the bed? I understand from your other post that the bed must be on this wall. What it feels like right now, imo, is that you have lots of separate pieces there, with no relation between any of it. I wonder if you could use the table and desk chair to the left side of the bed, to act also as a night stand? I would stain it the color of the other nightstand, and use that one on the right side of the bed. Get matching lamps to help unify the look. Then put one of the chairs and the skirted table down where the desk/chair combo is in the current pix. Because of the allergy issues, I know you can't do drapery. What I think you don't need there is another single item above the bed, to create a line of three single thing marching across the wall (window, mirror, window). I would like to see a grouping of smaller things, perhaps framed art of various sizes or plates or a mixture of things, including some kind of wall pocket or vase holding some greenery, above the bed for some interest and texture. The other thing that I think could make a big visual impact would be to add another pair (or stack of two pairs) of shutters that remain closed below the windows, to give the illusion that the windows are much taller. Would love to see some color or pattern in the bedding, even just a throw and one accent pillow. I would like to see the tv mounted on a moveable arm, so that you could put it on the wall to the right of the bed, swing it out to watch and swing back. It would then also be visible easily from the desk and the chair/table combo at the other side of the room.

anele - I tried the sofa on the wall with a chair at each end of the sofa, facing each other, but the problem with that arrangement is that it leave the room feeling a little lopsided. Most all the furniture, except the piano and the small cabinet near the 1/2 wall, is on one side of the room. Having the two chairs in the window helps to balance everything better. I'm not sure the table I have between the chairs right now is the best for that space. It is taller than the arms of the chairs and does kind of get in the way of conversation. I'm going to be on the lookout for a better table for that area. I agree that the wall behind the sofa will be a challenge. hill - you are right about the sofa blocking too much of the window and your comment about open, inviting and balanced are exactly what I was hoping to achieve. Here is the room today with the furniture in place and the rug added back in. It is not the right size or can I get away with it anyway? It is centered on the window and the sofa. See how the chairs are on the rug, but the sofa isn't? Another view (ignore the desk and audio equipment on the left). I I know I need to add a table to the left of the sofa. Most likely the table that was here originally (now sitting between the chairs) will come back to this location. Now I need to work on placing lamps, pillows and other accessories. Thank you to everyone who helped me get to this point.

I’d pull the sofa off the wall a drop. Add two matching chairs A larger rug. Then the area with the shelves and the desk... organize and create a “moment” Can that be used as a reading nook? Homework station? Work desk? Shelves for show...? What works best for you?

I'll try that tonight. That was the original placement - leather chair in the corner. I just didn't know if the two greens (dark green recliner and light green chair) would clash too badly.

Looking at these pictures...ugh. I'm just really frustrated with how my house is turning out. It's *so* not what I was going for.

Well, I really like what I see! I love the nice big foyer area you have and the windows and french doors in your family room are beautiful! I think you just need to add a few accessories and some artwork here and there and you will be set. Have you thought about putting a small sitting area in your foyer or perhaps a large console table and mirror there with a lamp or two? I can't really tell how large of an area you have but it seems pretty significant. I wish mine was that large. It is two-story but it is not very wide.

BTW, on my monitor, your furniture does not appear green at all. Your sofa and matching chair look off-white/creme and the recliner looks to be very dark blue. I guess it must be like a hunter green? It looks fine together, IMO. Maybe you could get some throw pillows that have some of the darker green in them to put on the couch to help tie it all together??

I think you should leave the recliner in the corner. It adds height there, that would not work IMO if you switched chairs. But you can always try it out to see.

It takes some time to accumulate wall hangings that you really like and that enhance your space. So I wouldn't be in a huge hurry to just buy any old thing, but definitely keep your eyes open for appealing and affordable things.

You can make some quick fixes, as suggested earlier, if you'll add patterned pillows and throws on the furniture to tie in all the colors. You could start with some of the bolder colors in your valance to use on the pale leather furniture, and maybe some of the lighter colors to use on the darker chairs.

Try swinging the recliner and end table away from the corner some and then move the speakers away from the tv cabinet, that is, spread those components out a bit.

I favor lamps in a corner (not sure why!) and so I'd switch the table lamp and lime jar. I think it will add a bit of height and interest to the corner.

You have the start of a nice room.

I like the chair. If you want a little color, a small quilted throw would be pretty on in.

We just bought a new rocker recliner, dh can't live without one, and I like it because I can put my feet on the floor and rock. I commented the night we got it how I couldn't wait until I rocked my new grandbaby in it. He came over the next day, was quite fussy & no one could get him to sleep, until granny took him and rocked him in the new chair. I knew then it was a keeper!

I also keep a small quilt on the back for both decor and to use if it's chilly.
