Introduction... now that I've typed it it's long!

Wanted to make a first post to introduce myself and tell you all thanks for the inspiration that you've given me since I wandered over here to the Cooking Foum of GW a couple of weeks ago.

I found GW when looking for help with our master bathroom renovation and have been haunting the bathrooms forum and the kitchen forum (looking forward to doing some kitchen updates in the late spring), BUT cooking is a great love of mine and it is so nice to find a group that doesn't think you're weird for cooking from scratch or that every recipe needs canned soup!

So, I'm almost 52 (birthday in 5 days!!), married and live in LA. My claim to fame is being the proud mom of four sons (26, 24, 23 and 19) who are each so special and dear to me. I love animals (we've got horses, dogs, cats), gardening and reading also.

Thanks again to all of you for your photos and posts.... this is a great site!

Ann T you have been a special inspiration ....do you have a link to your Thibault's table recipes anywhere? I had thought that you might be a LA cajun with your French name, but see you're from Canada!

Canarybird, you are a gifted cook AND photographer! I'm not able to post photos since I lost my camera (ie had stolen) last week while on vacation : (

Dixiedog, I send you hugs and best wishes from a new friend.... you've had an awful week and I hope you get some to yourself to breathe deeply and just close your eyes for a bit each day..... I always find that helps me carry on when the going gets rough.

Amanda, you're not the only one. Shame on us, but as long as you aren't killing or damaging the plant, taking from someone elses yard without asking first, I don't see the harm in doing it. I've been doing it for years and don't feel bad about it either. Never damaged the plant etc. never taken from someone's home. Sure have "helped out home depot, walmart, kmart, lowes in pruning their plants, dead heading all kinds of plants. In july actually had someone in walmart thank me for cleaning up the "ugly plants" by dead heading them, right into about 10 different baggies. Looked the woman in the face, smiled and said, "my pleasure, anytime I can help, glad to do so." She kind of looked at me like a sprouted another head. Got caught collecting dianthis firewitch seeds from a local garden center and was told "you realize those seeds will take a couple of years to grow and bloom, don't you?" I smiled and said "that's ok I'm young and can wait." Got in the car and couldn't stop laughing long enough to drive. couple of years, ya right, mister. My WS dianthis firewitch where blooming in my yard when he said that, the WS ones I transplanted in June 2005. Oh yes, he thanked me for doing some of his work, deadheading the plants for him. sometimes you wonder about these places don't you. and in August I went to a nursery, wanted this beautiful huge coleus, new breed called black night. This one was in a huge 15 inch pot. Marked down to half price they wanted $20 for it. Spent lots of time talking to the guys there about it and they said it is for outside and will not survive the winter indoors. A coleus that won't grow in the house all winter. They kept saying it and I kept thinking "you guys are nuts." almost bought it, put it in the cart, figured I could get cuttings and all. then spotted the seed heads on tons of coreopsis sunray. You know the rest, while I was busy, my friend got very rough, nicely rough with that huge coleus. cleaned up the six small pieces that had the "poor accident", put the injured parties in her purse to "nurse back to health" and yes she's a nurse and returned the monster to it's rightfull place. We have 10 small plants well rooted, planted in pots and growing well. (Yes, she's a great nurse, isn't she?). They look nothing like the original plant, but in the spring out in full light, they should be right back to what they are supposed to look like. don't feel guilty, I don't see where we did or do anything wrong. I don't know how to find threads that have gone past the # pages here on the tomato forum. As stated above I have tomatoes and peppers in 5-6 gallon pots. Some of my friends and neighbors have done the same because of our short growing season. Though I fertilize 2-3 times a month with 1/2 strength box fertilizer and 2-3 times with fish or seaweed fertilizer and compost tea. We all have under nourished plants though we have all tried different approaches to keep them healthy. We have all added more potting soil as well as soil from our compost piles.I have also added worm compost as my girlfriend has a 'worm ranch'. I'd found a thread back in June after my first surgery that had a fertilizing plan for Tomatoes in 5-10 gallon pots. I thought I had bookmarked it to my gardening folder but I guess I didn't (could have been the strong pills they had me on back then). I have read almost every page here at the tomato forum looking for it in case it was an answer to a question. (GRRRRR! Pulls more hair from balding head.) HELP! James

Ah, moonie, we all knew it would happen! I know what you mean about feeling badly for the husband. Pets bring such joy into our lives, my house just doesn't feel like a home without a pet in it. And it is sooo great for kids to grow up with animals - it teaches them to appreciate them and care for creatures much smaller and fragile than themselves, and they learn the true meaning of friendship through growing up with a dog. You're a good woman - if it was me I would've advised him that spouses come and go but a pet's love is unconditional and forever! Seriously though, I think it's great that he continues to come over and see the dog - maybe you can even make arrangements so that he can come walk the dog during the day if you are at work (I don't even know if you work during the day, I'm just guessing) or even to take him for walks on the weekends. I recently heard on the radio that some company is advertising "Rent-a-dog" where you pay something like $40 for the chance to take the dog of your choice to the park and play fetch, or whatever you like, and then bring him back without having to worry about vet bills, food, poop, etc. Not that I'm suggesting you charge the poor guy, your story just reminded me of it.

(((((Rita))))) Losing animals sure does leave a hole in your heart. Lisa we kept one of our cats alive with kidney failure going for 3 years before he died. He was quite old at the time so he may have had another age related illness that took his life. Don't give up on hope.

Grace, welcome! I've been posting for a couple of months, and I've found this is a really nice group of folks who love food. I love animals, too. We have a dog and cat, but I could never quite understand why my parents would not let me keep a horse in our basement, LOL!

Welcome Grace..I'm the mom of 3 boys...16, 11 and 8. We've got a dog, a tortoise and some fishies in a big tank. I feed the birds in the backyard..In fact I need to go make some more humming bird sugar water..I've got two Anna's Hummers that live with me all year long, or so it seems, they are staying again this fall and winter..
This morning I had to chase a Flicker off the roof..he was "nailing" my metal chiminey..LOL scared the carp out of me.

I wanna hear more about some cajun recipes. I have a friend for New Orleans..and like to suprise her with a goodie when they come for Easter dinner every year...and my hubby is from NC and likes spicey rich foods.

So please share!

Hi, Grace. I like your name.

Like a number of people here I came to CF after renovating my kitchen. I got some great advice there. Now I am about to have my bathroom renovated, so we can hold hands through that ordeal.

I'm another former cook who hopes to be a cook once again when I have more time. That was supposed to be in 2.5 years, but who knows, now.

Grace, a warm welcome to you from Chicago. I can tell you that I have made some wonderful freindships here as well as received wonderful cooking advise and recipes.

I am single but have my "aging" father with me as well as a silly foo-foo dog, Dylan or Dilly as we call him, Bear the invisible white cat (he is very shy), about 12 koi and too many goldfish in the pond, one frog and just yesterday a toad.

Thanks to all of you for the warm welcome!!

I just finished cleaning up from dinner and am pooped out! My husband is having hip replacement surgery tomorrow, so I worked most of the day to fix some special foods today on his last day home for a while. I'm not sure if anyone could actually thrive on hospital food it is so awful!

I'm glad to know there are so many pet lovers here too! Now that our three older sons are out of the house and our youngest is away at college, we share our house with "Atta" (Attagirl)/ 2 year old German Shepherd, "Mr. Biggs"/12 year old Jack Russell, Noel/ 12 year old tabby cat and Smudge the (mostly) barn cat!

Welcome Grace! I have been lurking a lot lately as we are so busy at work, that I have little time to post...at least until after the holidays anyway. You are right...there are so many talented people here and I envy each and everyone of them.

I live in Las Vegas and have 2 grown boys. One of which is living at home again and has put on some weight since he came back. Wonder what that says about my cooking? LOL

I started out on the kitchen and bathroom forum and ended up here on the CF. If you need inspiration this gang has always come through for me.

Hi, Grace! You and I are close in age, but I'm a few months older than you. I, too, find this forum an inspiration. I love animals, too, and have 7 rescued cats. I'm looking forward to the day when i can expand the managerie, adding dogs and chickens to the family, but I don't have the space or time right now.

Glad to have another LOUISIANA resident among us! So far, all the (one) people I have met from LA have been very cool! heehee

Welcome, Grace, to the Cooking Forum. I'm another of those people who thought "Los Angeles" when you said LA then said you had horses and I thought "where"? LOL

I have two horses including my Morgan saddle horse, Copenhagen (named after the horse that General Wellington rode into battle when he defeated Napoleon at Waterloo), and Dad's half Belgian buggy horse, King. Sadly, my father passed away in August and I inherited his "half" of King. He always said I owned the front half which ate the hay and he owned the back half which produced garden fertilizer. Therefore, keeping him fed was my responsibility. (grin) My beloved WonderWeiner left me over a year ago and I have no desire to replace him.

I also love to cook from scratch and grow most of my own meat and vegetables, and can/freeze/preserve much of it. I don't cook as much as I used to since I'm alone much of the time, my husband lives 3 hours away, but I still cook for my two daughters (20 and 26) and my two grandkids.

I hope we see you here often.

So many moms of boys!! And yes, Louisiana NOT L.A.!!!!

I"m at the hospital while my husbands surgery is about to start (hip replacement). I'd send a photo of the cafeteria food that I'm about eat, but I'm afraid it isn't very pretty!
