Now I've lost my loveable Jazz too........

I can't believe I'm typing these words. I don't know if anyone will remember, I lost my sweet boy, Rex not even 3 months ago, and now, my Jazz is gone too.

He survived having renal failure for 8 years. He was the most loveable cat I have ever known. I think it's partly because we have had him since he was just tiny.

He seemed to really start going down after Rex died, and it makes me feel a little better, knowing that maybe he just wanted to be with his brother, he missed him so much.

The house seems so quite and empty right now. I feel like I don't know what to do with myself, so much of my time was dedicated to them.

RIP my Rex and Jazz..... I miss you more than I can say, and my love for you is bigger than the sky you now call home.

Oh, that is so hard to bear, and so close together. Losing one's pets never gets easy. May you find a couple more that need a loving home.....not to take their place, but to share the love you can give.

I remember going to our local pound with a friend in the spring one year and was amazed at all the beautiful, grown pure bred dogs in their pens. I asked one of the volunteers about that, and she said their shelter fills up every year just before Christmas when people turn over their family pets to them so that they can buy a new puppy for Christmas. It broke my heart. Go find one of those deserving, abandoned pets at your local animal shelter. You can bring love to one or two of those bewildered former pets.

I'm the guy from SC pnbrown was referring to. In 2002, my father and I built a road worthy vacuum from an old 2-horse trailer and an 8HP Agri-Fab vacuum. I attached 6 feet or so of PVC pipe to the end of the flexible hose as a nozzle that I could hold. I soon found that it was easier to lay the nozzle on the ground and rake to it instead of moving it around because it would get jammed pretty easily if it was overwhelmed. I used it for a few years and then moved to another place where they bag their leaves, so I quit using it. I still have it. It should still work with a little tinkering. I'm in the process of upgrading, though. I have found that I have a tendency to bring home plastic bags and dump them whole and then they turn into a mess in the spring that I don't want to clean up. I do dump a lot when I get them home, but when I haul 200 at a time and head back out for more, I can't dump them all on the spot. I got over 1000 one year a few years ago. i still have plastic bag pieces all over the place when I till in certain areas. The upgrade... Same vacuum mounted on the rear of a 16 foot flat bed trailer with 6 foot sides and a conduit top covered with a heavy tarp. That's the plan anyway. I calculated it and with 4 foot sides, capacity would only be double what I had in the horse trailer. Maximum possible, that is. Not that I ever filled it that full, but it did come close on occasion. I have acquired the trailer frame and need service on the electic brakes and other wiring. And safety chains and a jack. And a tray welded on the rear for the vacuum to mount on. Once I get that done, I can add the bed of 2x6's and build the sides. There are stake pockets on the front and sides. I'll use metal roof pieces to make the sides solid. Then I'll cover it and give it a go. I drive a F-450 with an 8x12 dump bed on the back. So it's not great on fuel. Having a larger trailer means more collection per trip. More efficient (yeah, right). I have a couple of sub-divisions close enough that don't bag their leaves that make it worthwhile enough for me to visit. I live in Pendleton (Anderson county) about 2 miles from the county line (Pickens) where they vacuum all leaves in the city of Clemson. They will deliver vacuum truck loads of leaves to folks in the Clemson area if they are in Pickens county. Otherwise, I think they haul them 20 miles to the landfill site where they are composted. They will not deliver them to me even though I have offered to pay something for them. A vacuum truck load of leaves is worth paying for. So if they won't bring them to me, I'll take them. I got the funny looks from folks when I'd pull up with the horse trailer and start sucking. But quite a few folks would come out and talk to me about it. I can't wait to unveil the new and improved version. Probably next fall. I'm already popular with the baggers in Pendleton. They see me coming and some actually help load them. One old guy was complaining about how expensive the bags are, so I brought him a bunch back one time. Nice ones like he was using. What I really want is for some of the folks that are putting out bunches of bags at a time to quit using them altogether and let me suck them up. They'll like not having to bag them and I'll like getting clean leaves. Often pre-shredded and mixed with grass clippings! I love leaves! My most recent Vintage order is being shipped today and I am going to do yet another......One thing that encouraged me is that a friend and I went to the wonderful Naconiche Gardens in a town near me.....they have the most marvelous display gardens and every unusual plant you could imagine. It was a paradise - the people were knowledgable, friendly - and the display gardens you could walk around in and drool over for hours. Well......we drove up and the signs were taken down, the nursery closed, the stock sold and the beautiful display gardens neglected. I wanted to cry. I went to another local nursery that I like and found out they closed 2 months ago [2 hurricanes and a couple of horse shows kept me from going]. Everything went for half price. Another nursery closed in the same town. Vintage Gardens is a pearl without price. I cant imagine what rose lovers would do without this nursery. I am spending my rose money with them, building a garden just for Vintage bands. I am so happy to hear others are buying from them, hopefully it will be enough to keep them open. Who knows what will happen to the economy, but I dont know of another nursery that offers what Vintage does. Thanks to all who have stepped up to the plate and ordered. Judith

Hi PG! I don't feel so bad now. I just paid $35 & $20 for two carnosas, both were in 15 in hanging buckets, the larger was over 4 ft long I incorporated them both into the same pot with a rebar trellis it turned out really nice looking. He was asking $50 for the smaller and $65 for the larger. I told him the larger was worth easilly $100. Anyone want some carnosa cuttings off of a really old plant? I had to take quite a bit off to get them on the trellis and in the pot I wanted them in. Pictures coming soon :) With those deals I felt like I got took when I payed $20 for a hindu rope with one branch 3 ft long and two about 8 inches, and $10 for a 6 in pot of KP. I choked down $10 each for a rooted foot long stem of Rhipsalis edwaldiana and about a 4 in rooted stem of variegated hindu rope. I thought $95 was a good price for all.

Seriously, though... I've lost a few items. Back maybe 25-30 years ago, I lost the top and pants that I was wearing when we took family photos for my parent's 45th wedding anniversary. I don't know if they went home in someone else's bag, or what ever happened to them. And more recently, I lot a pretty blue t-shirt. Most of my t-shirts are man styled, but this was a pretty scoop necked, short sleaved t-shirt and I absolutely loved it. Wore it with jeans all the time when I wanted to dress them up a little. This shirt along with a pretty necklace would do it. We have a house in Michigan and at the time had one in Minnesota. I always figured I hauled it to MN with me, but next time I was there, the shirt wasn't! That's been over a year ago. We've since emptied everything out of the MN house and rented it out and I never did find that t-shirt! You wonder, where in the world can things GO to disappear like that!

I'm so sorry. Losing any pet is awful but 2 in 3 months-unreal! I'm so sorry. I have to admit, it brings me a lot of comfort to read you had Rex for another 8 years after having kidney failure. That's quite a bonus-remember that! One of our cats has kidney failure and we give him fluids twice a day. He is not 'old' but apparently his kidneys are in bad shape. He was only diagnosed 6 months ago and sometimes I get so sad thinking he probably won't be around long, although he seems to feel great. Hopefully he can be like Rex and beat the odds for quite a while! Your house must seem so empty. I can tell how much you loved your cats. I'm sure, in their honor, you will rescue another when the time is right. Stoney is right-at least they are together.

I am so sorry to hear this. After you grieve awhile, find two siblings to replace your beloved pets in your house, not ever in your heart.

I'm sorry to hear this, too. You clearly have a lot of love to give, and I hope you'll find another couple of cats or kittens who need a home (you won't have to look far), and bring them into yours.

Rita, I know this is very hard for you. I have been in a similar situation.

Please take good care of yourself. I know that Rex and Jazz would want you to bring another kitty into your home to keep you company, at a time when you are ready. My thoughts are with you.

Hi everyone,
thanks for the nice words. I should mention that we still have one cat, Gizmo. We've had 3 for so long, it just seems weird.
Rex and Jazz were both strays (as well as Gizmo), and we were all lucky to have found each other.
I really don't see us getting another baby, at least for a long time. The last 8 years have been a roller coaster ride, and we need a break.

Lisa, Actually Rex had CRF for about 7 years, Jazz was 8.
They were both 17 when they passed. Just remeber, the vets aren't always right....they told us that we would have our boys for about a year. Just never give up.

Rita I am so sorry that you have had this tragedy strike you twice in such a short time.
You must have taken such good care of your animals to have a feline go 8 years in renal failure.
I will tell my Rexy, and Abbie to be on the lookout for a new kitty crossing.

(((((Rita))))) Losing animals sure does leave a hole in your heart.

Lisa we kept one of our cats alive with kidney failure going for 3 years before he died. He was quite old at the time so he may have had another age related illness that took his life. Don't give up on hope.

Seven years in renal failure.... I'm impressed. I've had four with CRF doing the sub-q route and never done as well. Sorry for your loss.
