Need help choosing a bathroom paint color

I am working on my kids' new bathroom. They want to do a surfboard theme. They chose this shower curtain http://www.pbteen.com/products/hana-floral-shower-curtain/

It is periwinkle blue. The trim in the room will be white. The bathroom is divided- front room has the vanity and the back room has the tub and toilet. Any ideas for paint colors would be appreciated. Thanks for your help!

Surfboard theme, periwinkle blue -- you have a broad range of chooices. Here are just a few.

I like the greens on the top row, especially the darker one on the left. Don't like the peachy? paints on the bottom row.

In an inlaw apt we built last year, we used Hanstone's "Victorian Sands" quartz (lots of beige, black, white, some coppery tones) for the countertop with a white undermount porcelain sink & white toilet. Walls are painted in a sandy color w/white trim and looks nice. Flooring is tiled in a light cinnamon color (picks up the glaze on the vanity) with subtle gray and white streaks which relate to the white toilet. Cabinetry is a creamy beige. I used a brick red toile but could easily use a black toile in there.

nosoccermom, I have considered it, I saw your posts about it and yours looks great! I ordered the samples though and none really looked good in my rooms. The colors that company has are too busy and/or dark for these bathrooms, especially with the existing floor. However I did find some patterned vinyl contact papers I am considering - they have some other granite patterns and terrazzo and marble, too! Check these out: Terrazzo marble brown marble I just am having hard time envisioning an overall color scheme for some reason, I don't want to decide on the countertop without considering the floor and how the wall color will tie it together.

My DD used Daltile's Florentine Carrara for her tub surround and on her floor. She used the matte finish for both. She does not have a separate shower. That tile does come in a 2x4 mosaic. If you used that in the matte finish on the shower floor, it shouldn't be slippery. I do also think it would be fine to use the same tile on both the shower floor and bathroom floor. My DD used white grout and it actually looks a little to yellow next to the tiles. She wishes she had done a grey. Take a look at Custom Building Products Platinum or Rolling Fog colors. It looks to me like either of those might work.

Don't be afraid to go dark in small places. Dark works amazingly well in small places-imagine huge room that you use all the time painted dark..not for the weak nerves. While in smaller places, especially ones where you spend just so and so amount of time, dark is enveloping, cozy and calming actually-or elegant and striking, depending on the direction you take. Don't be afraid of contrast with white fixtures. Dark loves some white, and light touches, shiny surfaces like in your mirrors or lighting fixtures, metal (fixtures yet again, and picture frames for example)..it can become easily one of your favorite places in the house if you treat it like a little room. Go with one of the colors in your tile(it already has many, so I'd keep to one of them)...if your ceiling is standard-tint it with a wall color, in proportion more then usual, so it won't feel like a box with a white lid (usual proportion is around 5-10%..that' what good painters do when painting rooms. In rooms with standard ceilings and dark walls you might want to go as high as 50%..check it all of course beforehand, play with the proportion. every room has its own light thus its own rules. it won't make a room darker; it will create the illusion of a higher ceiling though, and prevent the white lid effect). If the ceiling is higher, then you have less to worry. But I'd tint the ceiling some anyway. Also, crown molding helps a lot in these cases..the line where walls and ceilings meet seems softer and somehow more pleasing to the eye. If you leave your paint semi gloss-it will also create the illusion of a room less dark, because the sheen is so reflective. Add art you love, and generally have fun with it-a rug in a richer tome/interesting pattern, a shower curtain that picks up the color, even just in a tiny detail, a little plant, an interesting mug instead of a regular toothbrush holder..you won't pay attention to the tiles you're not a fan of, because the bathroom will have other things you love, in abundance. Boys, girls, both and what ages? Do you want the same color in both areas? What else will bring in the surfboard theme? What is the floor? The tub surround? Vanity counter?

A lot of questions, I know, but boy or girl would make a difference in the colors I would use. Also, if you have white tile and counters, I might stay with a crisp white and add lots of bright colors in towels, a rug, and other accessories -- maybe use a blue paint to match the curtain the vanity area. I don't see those pastels -- I see fairly saturated brights, and a crisp white to set them off.

Wow...thanks for the photoshop pics! I have such a hard time with this because I tend to love everything!
To answer questions, we have an 11 yr old boy and a 7 yr old girl. We were hoping to find or make a surf board towel rack, but have no definite ideas for other decor. The tub surround is white, as is the toilet. The floor is getting put in next week- it is a mix of white and tans (almost looks like sand). The countertop is also white. I would be fine with one color or two different. Thanks for the help / ideas!

Well, I think you need this rug I spotted on Amazon to go by the tub...

Something like this (or paint them yourself) to go on the wall

When you look at those you will see links to beach signs, flip flop light string, outlet and switch plate covers, vinyl surfboard wall art and more. I'd pick a few of those, get bright beach color towels and accessories. Bathrooms are fun because it doesn't take too much to create a theme, but you can also go all out.

I also like the idea of using a matching blue paint around the vanity area, keeping the tub area white ad accessorizing with the blue and then using blue and white towels or other brights. I like crisp blue and white, but not everyone does, and with a boy and a girl, I think they'd most likely like a lot of colors to make it fun and not too feminine or masculine.

Thank you so much for the cute ideas! The kids love the surfboard rug and the signs for the bathroom. They are torn on color. Our daughter likes more color, while our son is leaning towards white.
