Don't care for those colors. Why don't you let your son decide what he wants and let him decorate his own room? He is 16.

It's probably too obvious, but how about the Hunter-Green in the plaid?!??

Either on one wall, or the whole thing! It would be a nice masculine color/room.
* If you "go green", I'd use a gray-primer, & then 2-FULL coats of green about 6 hrs. apart.
* It's only paint...not like you're movin' walls...;-)
* Maybe a two-tone wall?? Hunter-Green on the lower-half, & a Khaki on the top? One wall could MAYBE be a Red too! DEFINATELY gray-primer under a Red!
* Add a chair-rail moulding to separate the colors?!?!
* I would've LOVED that kind of color-scheme when I was 16....just a "couple" years ago.... !

if he wants red, i'd go red.

you could always paint the 3 stripes like on the comforter or pillow shams , along the walls.

I actually like both of those colors. What if you painted just the wall behind his bed red and the other three in one of the tan colors?

well, I don't see hunter green on my computer screen...to me it looks more navy or black.. I personally think I'd go with the other beige color, it looks more like a taupe on my screen. The expresso furniture would look awesome against it. You could also do the red behind the bed

Thanks everyone for your input! Faron, sorry, there is no green. It is black. But I appreciate your ideas. I wasn't ruling out red, but just considering other ideas that we hadn't thought of. I had considered painting the wall behind his bed red but what would you choose for the other walls? Nice to get other's input. AND there are a ton of reds out there! He did choose the comforter set and furniture himself and it looks awesome! As I said, nice to get other people's perspective using fresh eyes! Thanks! :)

I like a wall of red (a close match to the red on the linens...maybe a tad darker), and then, as sweeterthanhoney said, I'd use a taupe color to match the other tan in the comforter for the other walls. I'm not crazy about the one on the wall right now, that matches the smaller areas of oranger tan.

Your ds has great taste in bed linens, and I'd let him have the final say. My 18 yo ds is currently painting his whole room a bright burgundy. He's such a quiet, stoic guy, it's fun to see him be daring with his environment.

I guess it seems to be coming across that I am not letting HIM make the choices. Not true at all. He has picked out the linens and furniture himself and has had fun with it. But, he is just as stumped as I though on color. LOL!He now sees why I take so long in what seems like an easy decision. Neither of us have found the color or combination! I thought it would be fun to turn to you guys and get a different perspective.

It did seem like you were making the decisions and not your son. When I saw the photo of the bedding, it didn't seem to be bedding that a 16 year old would pick out. It looked to me like "mommy decorated room". With so much tan/beige in the bedding, unless you can exactly match the shade, I would not paint the walls tan/beige. It looks like you are trying to match the color of the bedding and didn't match it. Since this has been going on since August, I would just bite the bullet and paint so your son has a finished room. Even white walls would would be better than paint samples.

Kids do have the ability to pick out tasteful decor. Really, what is available for teen boys to choose from? He did a great job.

You did say, kmcg85, that ds wanted red, but you thought it would be too much, so that's where my comment came from. I might agree with you, and would also share that with my kids, but, in the end, let them have the final say. (Likely this is what you did, too.) I think it's OK to let kids live outside our boxes. I draw the line at black! (OK, probably a bit before that.) I know others who wouldn't even do that.

Actually, Premier might have something about a whole different color. Maybe a gray to connect with the black and set off all the other colors?

Things like that usually come packaged in a set.

I love the bedding and think it is wonderful that you and your 16 year old son are working TOGETHER on this. You seem like you want what is best for you both and I see nothing wrong with that. It is his room BUT also still in your home. It is great to give kids choices but with boundaries. I love the idea of red on the focal wall and a beige or taupe on the others. Good luck!

Hi,

I would try to find a colour to match the gray in the bedding rather than the beige/taupe. Gray is very contemporary and reads more masculine to me. I also think it would complement the red nicely, if you choose to go that route on one wall.

Benjamin Moore has a nice selection of grays. If you have southern exposure, I would go with a cool gray and a warm gray if the room gets northern or eastern light. BM has the handy snowflake (cool) and sun (warm) symbols on their swatch cards to help you choose.

kmc, your son has good taste! Nice project for the two of you to be sharing ;) If you're still struggling with colors, I'd be happy to do some virtuals for you to see what different colors look like with the bedding.

The walls painted in a pale gray that matches the comforter may look great. You didn't mention if the room is sunny, small or large. Are there windows? Sometimes the color picked can help open or close up a room. I have some interesting information about how colors affect a room and the person who lives in it. kmc - Did you pick a color yet?

When my son and I were working on his room, I got some similar comments about me decorating his room. I don't know why some people think we're making all the decisions just because we're posting on here. My son was just as anxious as I was to see everyone's suggestions.
