I like liquid soap at the sinks and we use bar soap in the showers.

I prefer using real soap that comes in a bar for showering and liquid detergent for handwashing.

Soap is all you need for bathing but for removing dirt from the garden and the like, liquid detergent works better. Most bath shops sell both. Just read the labels so you know what you are getting.

We use liquid for showers, mainly because I read they don't leave soap scum like bar soap. Good enough reason for me. We also use those mesh net bath things.

Liquid for washing hands and bar for showering.I have tried using many different liquids for the shower but they all leave a slick feeling on my skin.Makes me feel like I'm not completely dry and I hate that.I use "Tone" bar soap with cocoa butter,the original one.For a while I had trouble finding it.Wal-mart quit carrying it where I live but I found it at the WM here in Albuquerque.Once when I couldn't find it at home and was here I bought 4-6 bar packages and took it home.LOL I won't have to buy any for a while when I get home.

I love the bar soap I get from The Alaskan Soap Company, especially the Sitka Rose. It is made with glacial silt.

Soap will leave soap scum whether it is liquid or bar. Detergent is designed not to leave scum whether it is liquid or bar.

It is not the issue of "liquid or bar" that leaves scum in showers. It is the ingredients. Soap has always been considered better for the environment and for skin, but in recent time, detergents are now being made with safer ingredients.

Liquid! Bar, to me, seems like it would have the germs cling to it. And liquid always seems to rinse off better.

DH had extensive skin testing done. The dermatologist told us to look for the few brands of body wash that do not contain FORMALDEHYDE. (Yes, the stuff your frog was preserved in when you took Biology 101.) Most liquid *anythings* contain this, often under other names, because...well, who'd knowingly put formaldehyde on her skin? Solid soaps (bar soaps) don't need this preservative, and some liquids use other means of preserving the product.

This dermatologist had gone through the all the bath and beauty products at Walgreens and listed what's in all of them. (We ended up buying Olay's 'Ribons' body wash; all the other Olay washes had the icky stuff.)

I prefer bar soap, but we use liquid because you don't get the soap scum. (I don't know about ingredients, Dilly_Dally, but when we used bar soap, we always got soap scum, and since we switched to liquid, we never do.)

Dove liquid in the showers - no soap scum. DH found a liquid soap by Old Spice - it's the only one he isn't allergic to. For the sink, I just get whatever is cheapest at Ross.

Aveeno body wash....no bar soap.

Liquid for hands and Irish Spring bar for body. Don't do the foam ones because I refuse to pay for mostly water and air.

There was a post once somewhere (I think on the beauty forum) where people were complaining that their deodorant was no longer working. Turned out they were using liquid body wash. When they went back to bar soap the problem ended.

Foaming types don't have to be expensive. Just refill the foaming pump yourself with diluted dish soap or shampoo and it's cheap. Haven't done a cost analysis but it could even beat bar soap. Plus it's not as messy as bar soap.

Curious about the wash vs bar and deodorant. Actually I've found I need less deodorant overall since using the body wash. But each body is different and of course each cleaner is different too.

Were I to sew a pocket into my lingerie and stick a bar of soap in there ...

Oj you can make your own refill for the foamy soap. You can even make it out of your liquid dish detergent. of course you have to have one of the bottles for the foaming detergent so it will work.

Cynic - I think maybe it was because a lot of liquid soaps are pretty mild and don't have the antibacterial ingredients that the average shower bar does. If one is using a non-deodorant shower bar or a facial bar in the shower it probably doesn't make a difference.

Someone who showers daily is clean enough even if they use plain water probably.

As far as making your own foamy soap better make sure the container is washed and dried well each time. Also commercial preparations use purified water. If you use tap water you may introduce spores that can grow bacteria. Not a good idea.

We make a practice of rinsing the foam off bar soap after use and setting it on a raised soap holder so it dries. No soap gunk or breeding ground for bacteria that way.

OJ, if you put your soap there, there could be quite a combination of aromas! I won't go into detail! :)

Wildchild, yes I know about the thoughts about potential bacteria and I use several containers. When one is done it's washed out and dried, then refilled. An occasional bleach rinse in there to sanitize it. (Yeah, I'll risk the world imploding and my house flooding from using bleach! ;))

One point, the value of it, watch your bar soap too. Many suggest opening them up and let them dry out to last longer. Not sure if it's a moisture in there or what but they claim the bars will last longer if you do. Can't confirm or deny since the last bar of soap I bought was Fels Naptha to try out on laundry stains.

And there's controversy out there about antibacterial soaps. Some think we're killing off too many germs and bacteria. I used to think that was paranoia, but I'm starting to think there could be some truth to that. Looking at how Norway has essentially obliterated MRSA and how many times I see the "pristine" homes have sick people in them where someone who isn't afraid of a little dust does fine, it makes me wonder if there isn't some truth to that theory.

I guess I aim to keep my home clean enough to be healthy, and not try to be sterile, unless I'm doing surgery!
