Has anyone had Achilles tendonitis?

I thought I had it, and the doctor confirmed it yesterday. She wants me to wear one of those big boots, but I can't, because it throws off my gait and inflames the bursitis in my opposite hip.

Just wondering whether any of you have had it, how you treated it, and how long it took to recover. I'm already icing several times a day, using NSAIDs, doing gentle stretches, and resting as much as possible.

I believe I have it... but it only bothers me when my thyroid meds aren't right. It goes away after a raise in medication.

Planters Fasciitis (as well as carpel tunnel) is more commonly seen in thyroid patients... but I'd get a full thyroid panel done (including antibodies!!) if I were you.

I already know I'm hypothyroid. Have been since 1989, when I got radioactive iodine treatment for Graves Disease. I've never had trouble with my Achilles tendon before, though I've had plantar fasciitis since before I had thyroid problems. Never heard there was any relationship.

The Achilles tendonitis is really painful, and makes it hard to walk.

Morz------thanks so much for the Zimmer information----I'm pretty sure that is what my surgeon will be using----- We didn't learn too much today---It was basically just a talk about what to expect after surgery ---- each case is different so the instructions were pretty general. Carla---I remember when you had your hip done------As I recall you didn't have any problems. Are you still OK ?? My surgery date is Sept. 17------- I've been told that most people who have hip replacement usually need the other hip done. However I have a friend who had THR a few years before I did and so far she has no pain in the other hip---- She is 81 and looks about 60------and moves great. Hopefully this will be a "piece of cake"----LOL I would just as soon never go in a hospital but thank goodness they have all these surgeries ( I had successful back surgery in Nov 2005 ) or I would be in a wheelchair ----- Take Care, Florence

Thanks for your reply Linda. Well it is 8 weeks since the accident so what is a couple more now. It is just part of my thumb that doesn't work (last two joints) but I have feeling and my tendons aren't dead I can assure you because trying to make the thumb works puts pain up nearly to my elbow. My Dr did say I don't know if it can be fixed...I kinda freaked and he sent an urgent fax!!! The way my wrist looked I'm lucky it is not worse. The palm of my hand was almost touching my forearm and then my fingers were poking out everywhere...very gross. I was wondering if the tendon could be pinched vs torn because it hurts so much to force movement? I did read they can do a scope of a wrist like a knee so maybe that will be done...is that a bad thing to have? I like to sew and do needlework so this thumb thing has me down. Jean

blfenton- His leg is always elevated because the throbing begins within minutes of having it lowered. Plus, the doctor told him to keep it elevated at all times to help with healing. Finding a comfortable position has been challenging. faron - surgery is surgery. I'm sure it is painful for you too. Thanks. bethpen - Our husbands must be cut from the same cloth. Same situation here, that is why I'm so concerned that he complains of pain. It MUST be bad. Pal - He was going up the stairs quickly, and his foot slip, then he heard it snap. No cool stories behind it! No cipro either. All the doctors and nurses at the hospital agreed that it usually happened when it wouldn't be expected. Yes oakley - I've been telling him to take the max pain meds for the first few days just to stay on top of it. This evening he tried to take just 1/2 a dose, but took the other half 45 minutes later. He hates taking medication but I think he sees that it is necessary for now. I do have to say that he appears to be a bit better today. Less wincing when he moves. Thanks everyone for your stories and tips. It is making me feel better about the situation.

I had it many, many years ago. Really didn't go away completely until I took time off work and off my feet. Since you have been getting therapy you probably know all my tips. I got it from running in improper shoes. So, number 1 is having the right shoes for the activity! Go to a running store, see if you need inserts for your shoes or a special shoe for your gait. Stretching, anti-inflammatory meds and food (ie, tart cherry juice 4 ounces daily). Elastic wraps and ice to control the flare-up. Good luck! Also, there is a class of antibiotics (floxins) that can cause Achilles tendon problems in a few people - avoid those unless critically needed.

I had surgery to repair my Achilles tendon about twenty years ago and haven't had a problem since

I've had it for months. My physiotherapist tells me that as there is minimal blood supply to that area it takes a looooong time for it to repair itself. I wear orthotics in my shoes which helps, as does ultrasound treatment. I also do a bunch of stretching exercises. As there is some calcification I'm probably stuck with it forever. I have good days and not so good days.

Colleenoz, I've had it for months, too. I've been icing several times a day, using heat to increase blood flow, and doing the stretching exercises. I really only went to the doctor because I was afraid I'd ruptured it. Now that I know I haven't, the pain is bearable. It's definitely less pain than the hip bursitis that will flare up again if I wear the stupid AirCast boot!

Can someone tell me more about it? Is it heel pain? I've always thought I had plantar fasciitis, but maybe it's more than that; it is getting worse and I can't seem to find any shoes that don't aggravate it. I have a HUGE deductible, so I'd rather not see the doctor about it. The chiropractor i work for says to do the stretching, ice it, etc. nothing seems to help much :(

Planters Fasciitis causes pain in the bottom of the heel, especially noticeable in the morning when you wake up. Achilles Tendonitis causes pain in the back (not the bottom) of the heel.
