Has anyone had Achilles tendonitis?

I thought I had it, and the doctor confirmed it yesterday. She wants me to wear one of those big boots, but I can't, because it throws off my gait and inflames the bursitis in my opposite hip.

Just wondering whether any of you have had it, how you treated it, and how long it took to recover. I'm already icing several times a day, using NSAIDs, doing gentle stretches, and resting as much as possible.

I believe I have it... but it only bothers me when my thyroid meds aren't right. It goes away after a raise in medication.

Planters Fasciitis (as well as carpel tunnel) is more commonly seen in thyroid patients... but I'd get a full thyroid panel done (including antibodies!!) if I were you.

I already know I'm hypothyroid. Have been since 1989, when I got radioactive iodine treatment for Graves Disease. I've never had trouble with my Achilles tendon before, though I've had plantar fasciitis since before I had thyroid problems. Never heard there was any relationship.

The Achilles tendonitis is really painful, and makes it hard to walk.

Morz------thanks so much for the Zimmer information----I'm pretty sure that is what my surgeon will be using----- We didn't learn too much today---It was basically just a talk about what to expect after surgery ---- each case is different so the instructions were pretty general. Carla---I remember when you had your hip done------As I recall you didn't have any problems. Are you still OK ?? My surgery date is Sept. 17------- I've been told that most people who have hip replacement usually need the other hip done. However I have a friend who had THR a few years before I did and so far she has no pain in the other hip---- She is 81 and looks about 60------and moves great. Hopefully this will be a "piece of cake"----LOL I would just as soon never go in a hospital but thank goodness they have all these surgeries ( I had successful back surgery in Nov 2005 ) or I would be in a wheelchair ----- Take Care, Florence

Severed tendon in thumb

I severed my Flexor Tendon, and all the nerves above my IP Joint in my left thumb on 11-25-07 on my table saw. A surgeon from The Indiana Hand Center met me at the hospital that same day to repair the damage that I inflicted upon myself. With-in a month I had a 'sensation' to touch in my thumb above my IP Joint. I continued my PT (Physcal Therapy), but was informed that surgery (Arthrofibrosis) would be required to remove scar tissue and to relieve my capillaries in order to get the motion back in my IP Joint. This surgery was performed on 4-4-08. On 4-11-08 while doing my PT I felt something snap. I underwent a 3rd surgery on 4-18-08. What had happened was that my Flexor Tendon ruptured at the point that it attached to my bone in my thumb. I now have my Flexor Tendon sewed back on and 2 wires running through the Flexor Tendon and out through the bone then the thumb nail with a button to keep them from pulling back into my thumb. I have complete faith of getting at least 60% usage of my thumb back. After being without it for the past 5 1/2 months, that sounds wonderful. I've done extensive research on this on the internet, and everything tells me the same basic information. Stick to your therapy appointments, and do all your therapy as instructed if you expect a good recovery. I hope yours doesn't go the way mine has, but I still have faith in my recovery. Has anyone had knee replacement surgery?

ALLEUIA,this is the first i've been able to get on here in several days,since i posted that question about the security alert.After i posted that,i could never get back here til now.I was having severe withdrawl symptoms!!LOL Anyway,i need to have knee surgery,and have needed it for the past few years.Dr has suggested that i wait awhile as it really doesn't last for the rest of your life.So i have done that,but am seriously considering having it done this spring.I too have arthritis in my knees,and i'll be 70 in March. My ds had it maybe 5 years ago,but his knees were worse than mine due to motorcycle/dirtbike racing.He got the knees from a cadaver and is doing very well.His recovery was super fast,He had it done on a thursday and went back to work on Monday,at first in a wheel chair for a couple days,then on crutches.He never went to rehab,instead he had some contraption set up in his bedroom at home as he told his dr,i have a businees to run,and don't have time to be running to someplace for therapy,so they got him set up and he did very well.Now you would never know he had knee problems. My sons dr and my dr both told me i should start exercising my legs now to get them strong before the surgery as that will make the recovery shorter and less painful.So ds is going to bring me his stationary bike and set it up in my sewing room.Yipee!! Has anyone had rotator cuff surgery?

I spent six weeks with my sister ( age 71) who had rotator cuff surgery at Duke. She had a donor graft so that her own tendon didn’t have to be stretched as much. That helped with pain and her recovery. The ice machine helped a lot, and she had a TENS unit that she used faithfully. She also slept in a lift recliner and had physical therapy twice a week. The one thing that helped a lot was a shirt she got on Amazon that had Velcro closure at the shoulder and down the sides. Otherwise she would have had to struggle getting in and out of clothes and the ice machine. I saw them on Etsy with snaps, but hers were Velcro. You might want to google “surgery shirt” or lrotator cuff shirt” or something similar. You really need someone to help you take the ice machine on and off, load and empty the ice machine, place the TENS unit patches, and drive you back and forth to therapy. The whole thing was a hassle, but thankfully, not too painful ( didn’t need the prescription meds after a day, only Tylenol). Surgery was successful, and after five months my sister has full use of her arm and shoulder. Good luck!

I had surgery to repair my Achilles tendon about twenty years ago and haven't had a problem since

I've had it for months. My physiotherapist tells me that as there is minimal blood supply to that area it takes a looooong time for it to repair itself. I wear orthotics in my shoes which helps, as does ultrasound treatment. I also do a bunch of stretching exercises. As there is some calcification I'm probably stuck with it forever. I have good days and not so good days.

Colleenoz, I've had it for months, too. I've been icing several times a day, using heat to increase blood flow, and doing the stretching exercises. I really only went to the doctor because I was afraid I'd ruptured it. Now that I know I haven't, the pain is bearable. It's definitely less pain than the hip bursitis that will flare up again if I wear the stupid AirCast boot!

Can someone tell me more about it? Is it heel pain? I've always thought I had plantar fasciitis, but maybe it's more than that; it is getting worse and I can't seem to find any shoes that don't aggravate it. I have a HUGE deductible, so I'd rather not see the doctor about it. The chiropractor i work for says to do the stretching, ice it, etc. nothing seems to help much :(

Planters Fasciitis causes pain in the bottom of the heel, especially noticeable in the morning when you wake up. Achilles Tendonitis causes pain in the back (not the bottom) of the heel.
