Has anyone had Total Hip Replacement lately

I will be having another THR on Sept 17th.

I had the right hip done back in 2001.

the Dr. told me I will notice a big difference in the procedure now---He said instead of a 10 in. incision it will be about 2 in. and the surgery will only take about 35 min..

recovery is quicker-----they don't have to cut the tendons and muscles---.

this time it will not be necessary to donate my own blood as there is less blood loss.

Has anyone heard anything about this new method ??

Do you know anyone who has had it.

We will be going to the hospital on Wed. for a discussion and I would appreciate any information anyone has-

I'm really sick of surgeries----first the right hip ---- then back surgery---- and now another hip---

As they say getting older is not for sissies---LOL

Florence, the MIS (minimally invasive surgery) was still a gleam in someone's eye when I had my left hip replaced 5 years ago; I ended up with something in between and had a single 4" incision where one major muscle was cut.

I think you're going to be very pleased with the improvements that have been made and with how quickly you will get back to your normal routine. Better than your current 'normal' if you are in pain....Let us know what you find out on Wednesday, you'll be pleased with the newest options available to you.

I've kind of followed along and still get a newsletter from Zimmer, who made my parts :) There are probably other manufacturers of the newer components, but there is information for you here on their website:

Not since 2005 but I'm sure I will need the other hip done sometime.
Florence, that sounds great with the minimal incision and quick surgery time.

Hello Hamiltongardener, Thank you for taking the time to look up info for me! The lake is pretty clean and is always being tested. It is pretty normal for the geese to eat other than it's aquatic foods. People with grass have avery hard time here because they love to eat grass. That is why they usually hang around golf courses. I do not have grass, so I never really had them coming up on my yard before except to maybe cross my yard to get to someone elses grass. BUt I have been here for 2 gardening seasons now and they never bothered the garden, but I only had my tomatoes,peppers,pumpkins,squash and herbs. Like I said, the seem to like all the leafy veggies, because when this happened this year, they left the pumpkins alone. So I was hoping that they would not like the tomato plants, also because they have a strong oder to them. I thought I heard once that tomato plant leaves were posionous to some animals? I can always give in and get a goose repellent to make a barrier, but I really would like to avoid that so not to pollute my lake. So confused! Christy

Have you been seen by a physical therapist? That is the person who can give you the most info on exercises & Tens units. But they sometimes don't want to give info out. I asked at a hospital physical therapy unit if they had a page of placement spots for migraines for my tens unit that my dr. had ordered for me. They come with almost no info. The hospital people acted like I had lost my mind, asking for their secrets! No way, only patients here get that info. Since I didn't have insurance at the time I left. I didn't have much luck but few yrs ago I got another unit that seems to help more but Butterbur herb from Germany that they have to give kids now for their migraines- takes 3 mos of daily capsules to start working but some kids get rid of their headaches permanently after couple of years. Adults were supposed to get about 60% better. Sounded good to me. After 3 yrs on it I'm 85-90% better! Got a good part of my life back. Whole Foods has the herb. it hasn't had any side effects & no interactions with food or meds. Don't take hardly any migraine meds. Used to have daily headaches. Barometric changes still mess me up & smoke of any kind(so far no fires in mountains this year) Back to tens unit, I think it helped 2nd time around but I didn't keep up with it as I was doing so much better. This was while I had stress of 2 ill parents. I wonder if a glucosamine 1500mg-chondroitin-1200mg. Would help- it works on dogs & sure works on my joints. It has VitD3-1000mg added in 1 I get at Sam's Club but lot of them add MSM & I get sick from that so stick with 1 that works. It kind of strengthens or lubricates joints. The shots that are supposed to lubricate didn't work on friends that paid out of pocket for them.

In full disclosure, I work for URC (The Manufacturer). First of all I want to comment on the following comment made by "Doug_GB" I'm a computer scientist, not an electrician. But I can tell you that there are and have been a lot of different automation systems out there. Unfortunately, most of them never become popular, and the manufacturer either limps along or goes out of business. So after 5 years, there may be no more techs to support the thing. ---- To this point, URC is one of the largest manufacturer of Remote Controls on the planet. I can almost guarantee anyone reading this has used a URC Remote Control at some point. Your cable box, tv, etc very well may utilize a remote that we manufactured. Additionally, integrating audio and video? What happens when you need to replace the TV or receiver? What kind of integration would you have then? ---- To this point, when your system changes, you will need to have things reprogrammed but as opposed to other options, URC is much faster and easier to make changes and the cost will not be substantial. Dealers can access and reprogram the system from offsite if you allow them to. I sure as hell wouldn't tie my HVAC to the system. ---- Tying in the HVAC system is simple and doesn't affect or change the operation of the HVAC system when it is by itself. It simply communicates with the thermostat to give the control. The biggest problem with these proprietary whole house automation systems is just that - they are proprietary. ---- It is not as proprietary as you'd think. The whole concept is that while some stuff is required, it will communicate with many various systems and components such as other lighting systems, hvac systems, and more. Want to upgrade something or add a new product? Got to call the installer. Problem with your HVAC? Got to call your HVAC person who then may blame your home automation control, which then means you have to call your installer again. Want to add some new product they advertise? Well, you got to get it from your installer. ---- This is true. So is the fact that should your plumbing go bad? Gotta call a plumber, your house collapses - probably gotta call an architect. I think you get the picture. There are professionals in every field - but should you behappy with your installer, you should be happy to call them when you want to add or change the system. That being said, you are not forced to stay with that dealer and there is nothing a dealer can do to stop another URC dealer from taking over the system without starting over and reprogramming the entire thing. URC does not make their programming software available to anyone except their "authorized dealers". ---- This is true and for good reason. The system is complex and without extensive hours of training, you wouldn't do anything but harm with the software in hand. Be careful, you're basically marrying your "home entertainment guys" for life. ---- You are marrying the fact that you will need some sort of "Entertainment Guys" to make changes to your entertainment system down the road. Nothing is forcing you to stay with the same dealers should you feel wronged by them - but I would hope you stay satisfied and loyal to them into the future should they have put hard work into making you happy with your system! Has anyone had rotator cuff surgery?

I spent six weeks with my sister ( age 71) who had rotator cuff surgery at Duke. She had a donor graft so that her own tendon didn’t have to be stretched as much. That helped with pain and her recovery. The ice machine helped a lot, and she had a TENS unit that she used faithfully. She also slept in a lift recliner and had physical therapy twice a week. The one thing that helped a lot was a shirt she got on Amazon that had Velcro closure at the shoulder and down the sides. Otherwise she would have had to struggle getting in and out of clothes and the ice machine. I saw them on Etsy with snaps, but hers were Velcro. You might want to google “surgery shirt” or lrotator cuff shirt” or something similar. You really need someone to help you take the ice machine on and off, load and empty the ice machine, place the TENS unit patches, and drive you back and forth to therapy. The whole thing was a hassle, but thankfully, not too painful ( didn’t need the prescription meds after a day, only Tylenol). Surgery was successful, and after five months my sister has full use of her arm and shoulder. Good luck!

Morz------thanks so much for the Zimmer information----I'm pretty sure that is what my surgeon will be using-----
We didn't learn too much today---It was basically just a talk about what to expect after surgery ---- each case is different so the instructions were pretty general.

Carla---I remember when you had your hip done------As I recall you didn't have any problems.

Are you still OK ??

My surgery date is Sept. 17-------

I've been told that most people who have hip replacement usually need the other hip done.

However I have a friend who had THR a few years before I did and so far she has no pain in the other hip----

She is 81 and looks about 60------and moves great.

Hopefully this will be a "piece of cake"----LOL

I would just as soon never go in a hospital but thank goodness they have all these surgeries ( I had successful back surgery in Nov 2005 ) or I would be in a wheelchair

Florence - my recent neck surgeries have been done with lasers and microsopic instruments - MIS all the way! Same deal with smaller incisions, less blood loss, shorter recovery time. I was able to walk and talk almost immediately upon entering the recovery room, as opposed to a 10 week recovery in 98 when I got the plate in my neck. I hope it will be a breeze for you! We'll both be going under the laser on the same day - we can send each other warm fuzzies!

I can't give you any info on hip surgeries but I can wish you good luck! Where will your operation be done? I am sure your honey will take good care of you.

I know people who have had this surgery; they claim to feel 100% better for having had it.

Florence, best of luck. Six months down the road I hope we're hearing stories about how you're doing cartwheels while gardening.

on Sept 17

I've been told that this one will be much easier than the one I had in 2001

DH was just asking about you the other day-----

We enjoyed our visit at the beach.

After your surgery I hope you and DH will come back and visit again. The fall and winter are nice down here! It is great down here now after Labor Day. I will be thinking of you on 9/17. My mother had hip surgery at Frankford/Torresdale years ago and did rehab at St. Mary's and did well. No worries for you!

We will try to get down but it will be sometime before we will be taking any trips LOL

I am glad your getting the minimal invasive this time. I am an Xray tech at an Arthritis Doctors. I met a patient (In his 40s!) today who got the minimal invasive one and he was very pleased.

PS I have 2 zeffys now. Not many blooms. Maybe with time. 1 is new and 1 is 2years.
