that's your work surface? you kill me. mine would be littered with measuring spoons and spilled this, that and the other, flour dusted everywhere adn then everything else all over the place. i am forever trying to find an empty space to take a picture to post.

i see you got yourself a peel or is that a cutting board under your cookie tray?

what is the difference between you mom and martha's recipe? and i assume martha's can be rolled?

Leave it to Maureen to notice my glasses! Oh yes, I've made my share of mistakes due to not wearing my glasses. I don't have too much trouble reading the recipe, it's reading the measuring cup and spoon size that I have problems with. And with the new measuring cups and spoons they include 1/2 T and 3/4 c. and other odd measures. Dang it, why don't they put the sizes in large RED LETTERS/NUMBERS!!

I use prep bowls and it keeps my kitchen very neat. I keep telling everyone about the prep bowls but ya don't listen. ;)

I prep in my baking center, not on the island. And I used my KA mixer which is not in the picture. And when you use the KA, the flour stays in the bowl.

No peel and I do want one too. That is my MIL's cutting board, it is very old and I think she brought it from Italy when they came over in '48. I keep it on my island now and I love it! It is so convenient to have a large cutting board near the stove.

Martha's recipe is not a rolled cookie dough but if you refrigerated it, you could roll it out.

Lollipop cookies

2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour (spooned and leveled)
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, room temperature
1 cup granulated sugar
1 large egg
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
Colored sanding sugar or sprinkles (preferably black and orange)
24 wooden ice-pop sticks

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt; set aside.
In a large bowl, using an electric mixer, beat butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Add egg and vanilla; beat until combined. With mixer on low speed, add flour mixture; mix just until combined (do not overmix).
If using two colors of sanding sugar, place each in a separate shallow dish (or combine them in one). Roll dough into balls, using 1 1/2 tablespoons for each. Roll in sanding sugar, pressing lightly to coat completely. Insert a wooden stick in center of each ball; place on baking sheets, about 1 1/2 inches apart, with wooden sticks lying horizontally. Lightly press down on each ball with the bottom of a glass to flatten slightly.
Bake until edges are golden and crisp, about 20 to 25 minutes. Transfer cookies immediately to a wire rack to cool completely.

If you bake the cookies this long they will be too well done. I keep on eye on them and when the edges are brown the cookie is done. I'd guess about 10-12 minutes.

Sugar Cookies (Mom's recipe)

1/2 c. shortening or butter, softened (I use butter)
3/4 c. sugar
1 egg
1 TBL Milk or cream
1 tsp vanilla
1 1/4 c. flour
1/4 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt

I usually sift my dry ingredients for this recipe. Cream butter and sugar and add flour, salt, and bp mix well. Add vanilla and egg and mix. Chill for about 2-4 hours. Either roll out for cut cookies or use a cookie press.

Michelle, I really study the pictures of kitchens I like! (takes me back to my renovating days in the Kitchen forum). I had to compromise some of my plan because Dick wanted 'his' sink in a certain location. He washes up so what could I say?!?!

I noticed your glasses mostly because they are near one of the soapstone (?) veins. I alternate between my contacts(which then require reading glasses) and my glasses which I take on and off. I often have to think...what room did I leave them in?!?!?!

btw, the cookies look darn good too.

One final note..I really liked the dotted paper under your flickr picture of the original cookies. Tres Halloween wasn't it. ;-) Maureen

ahem...i use prep bowls, i use a kitchen aid mixer and flour flies everywhere. i really need to do all my mixing and cooking and stuff outside so i can keep my kitchen clean.

by the way, although i noticed the glasses, what i really noticed was how small the recipe print was. when i copy and print them out, i use 14 or 16 font size so i can see.

you know what i can't wait to do? bake with the g-babe when she's a little older. and these would be fun cookies to make for any occasion.

I have a 24X18 inch counter to do all my prep, that is it. I live in an apartment building that was built in the early 1920s. There are 2 outlets ... and one little counter.

BTW you can send that cutting board to me, it would give me an extra counter ... LOL !!

What great cookies. How do you ship them?

I'd like to send them to my grandson in Texas. I think I might have problems taking them on the plane, they'll probably confiscate them (and eat them) for some unknown risk to public safety!

I put the cookies in a box with lots of tissue and sometimes wax paper between layers and they have always arrived intact. If I am sending fragile cookies I pack as above and then wrap the box in bubble and then put the bubbled box in another box. The box in a box method works very well for fragile glass items too.

This recipe is a very good recipe for children and the stick stays put too. So no problems with cookies falling off the stick like the last few bites of popsicles.

When I was teaching I always made cookies with my students and they would have loved making this recipe. I can see no problem with even young children having the coordination needed to roll the ball of dough in the colored sugars.

Love the pics too. I have a great working space in my new kitchen and love it; a center island that's 28" x 98".
It's granite so I can roll doughs out on it. I can make a mess and still have space for pics that don't show the mess. LOL
