Apple picking, baking, crunching through piles of leaves, sipping warm drinks by the fire — these are just a few of the many simple pleasures autumn has to offer. Traditions like these become rich with meaning when returned to year after year, and sharing them with family and friends only makes them sweeter. Check out these 15 fall traditions to consider adopting, and then we want to hear about your own fall favorites.
1. Take a Trip to the Pumpkin Patch
Pick up some pumpkins, gourds and fall flowers to decorate with. The more, the merrier. An abundance of pumpkins and gourds in different shapes, sizes and colors makes for a cheerful display that will last through the autumn months. If you have little ones, make it a tradition to take their picture sitting among the pumpkins — over the years, you can see how they grow from pumpkin size themselves to towering over the orange globes!

The fireplace gets a wreath every season Fall is my favorite it starts the season’s off.
I too love these old discussions because each year we can all add to them--and they just get better with more input. Also, I am absolutely batty and enthralled this year, 2022, because it feels like the first time the holiday seasons that take up the last three months of the year can really and truly be celebrated. (I still wear a mask in public and will continue to do so, but I am also looking forward to all the seasonal events and things that will happen this year.
So, last Saturday, the first of October, I got out my autumn decorations. The porch is decorated, the bookshelves, the coffee table are all done with gorgeous faux pumpkins, leaf garlands, wheat, autumn-colored silk ribbons, and more. It's all so glorious and wonderful and I am thrilled to be able to go to a couple of local pumpkin farms and stands.
Work is having a kind of Halloween potluck and I spent several days cruising recipe sites for ideas on what to bring. I wanted to stay away from sweets--oddly, I find the overwhelming amount of sweets in these final months to be nauseating so I was looking for savory and something that didn't require an oven. I finally found it, a Halloween Meat and Cheese Board. Sounds both fun and delicious even if the bony hand will be missing on mine.
