what dish/food makes you think of Halloween/fall?

We're organizing a lunch at work, geared toward Halloween, or fall. Someone always asks me what to bring. I can think of pumpkin cookies, banana bread, anything with apples. I was considering bringing apples with caramel or peanutbutter dip, but I think we need "meal" suggestions. I thought about soup, but would need a vegetarian, maybe potato soup, or I could make an Italian tortellini soup without meat. Doesn't feel "fallish" to me though. I debated pumpkin soup, but have never eaten it, & since several are very picky, I'd probably do better with something more common. Any suggestions on a main course or side dish?

We're having dinner at our home, and it's going to be "pot luck" with two other couples--we did this last Halloween too and had a blast! I'll be making Creamy Shrimp Soup, using the Spicy Cheeseburger Soup recipe from wizardmom, but using shrimp and maybe even crab instead of ground beef, and I'll probably sub out the green bell pepper for a red one, and sub out the beef bouillon/granules for stock instead. I might add a bit of cream to it too. I'll also be making one of my favorite meatloaf recipes using ground turkey. This will be accompanied by steamed fresh haricot vert, and a tossed green salad with mixed greens, slivers of Maui onions, avocado, petit peas, toasted pecans and maybe hearts of palm with a light vinaigrette. One couple will be bringing appetizers and the other will be bringing dessert.

dekeoboe I'm sorry, but I'm not sure where I found that particular picture any more. It was saved in my "storage" bookmarks but we decided not to use it b/c we decided to keep our dishes in upper cabs. It is possible that it was a UK only product b/c I know I found a bunch of things they have there that we don't that I am having shipped to cousins in Scotland and then sent over here. Apples, pumpkin pie and of course soup. When the air gets that crisp feel and smell, the first things I think of are football and chili. Someone gave me a butternut squash a couple weeks ago and we liked it so much I bought one at the grocery store yesterday. So it may get added to the above list.

I think a nice dish of roasted fall veggies would be good too..
potatoes, yams, carrots, beets, squash, fennel...whatever you like.. cut to the same sizes, drizzled with EVOO, s&p and roast at 400F...till they test done.

Some good ideas! I was thinking soup, & Deanna mentioned homemade bread, I'm thinking I'll bring potato soup & homemade bread. Wish I hadn't broken my crock pot, but I have a microwave. The roasted veggies sound really good...definitely have some suggestions for others. Love the idea of hot cider too. I may have to just plan a menu & tell everyone what to bring, I've definitely got some cravings now.

Ah, yes, fall. Pork, apples, winter squashes, sauerkraut, soups, homemade bread (the dark peasant kind). Anything with pumpkin in it, turkey and dressing, pot roast, bean or split pea soup. Now I'm hungry.

I really like cream of potato soup but right now I'm hungry for split pea soup with some of Terri's honey wheat bread or those sweet potato biscuits Nancy (wizardnm) made last year when I stopped for dinner...

Corn pudding! I haven't thought about that, I love corn pudding. Sweet potatoes too. This is leading into my Thanksgiving dinner menu. I have to go back and look, somewhere yesterday I saw a recipe for pumpkin dip, I need to try that for the holidays.

Two of my favorite fall vegetarian soups---peanut soup and corn chowder. Both can be made 1 day ahead.

Peanut Soup
-----------
1T peanut oil
1 onion, halved, sliced
3 garlic cloves, minced
3T curry powder
4C chicken stock (I use veggie stock)
1/3C rice (uncooked)
3 carrots, peeled, sliced
1/2C creamy peanut butter
1 1/2t sugar
Chopped green onions and/or chopped cilantro

Heat oil in heavy saucepan over medium heat. Add onion, garlic and curry powder and sautÃ© until onion is translucent. Add 4C stock and bring to boil. Stir in rice and carrots. Reduce heat and simmer until rice is very tender, stirring occasionally, about 20 minutes.
Puree about half of soup in blender with peanut butter. Return puree to saucepan. Stir soup until heated through, thinning with more stock if desired; do not boil. Mix in sugar. Just before serving, garnish with green onions and cilantro.

Corn Chowder
------------
1/2 stick butter
1 small onion, chopped
1/2C diced red bell pepper
1/2C diced green bell pepper
1/2t ground cumin
1/4t cayenne pepper
1/4C all purpose flour
1C canned chicken/veggie broth
1C milk (don't use skim)
1 16- to 17-ounce can whole-kernel corn, drained, liquid reserved
Minced fresh cilantro (optional)

Melt butter in heavy saucepan over medium heat. Add onion and bell peppers, cumin & cayenne and sautÃ© about 8 mins. Add flour and stir 1 more minute. Gradually mix in broth, milk and reserved corn liquid. Bring mixture to boil, whisk until smooth. Mix in corn and stir until corn is just heated through. Ladle soup into bowls. Garnish with cilantro if desired and serve. (This is also good topped with sour cream and/or shredded cheddar cheese).

Mincemeat pie or Raisin Apple Walnut pie. Indian Pudding or other steamed puddings. Anything with pumpkin or squash. Thick and hardy chowders, soups and stews.
