Just about everything. I was a very picky eater when I was a kid. Also grew up in a meat and potatoes household. My mother cooked everything to death. One thing I particularly didn't like was asparagus, but had only had it out of a can and it was so mushy. When we bought this place, there was an old asparagus bed here and I found out how delicious and succulent it really is. I don't ever remember my mother cooking broccoli, and I guess I learned to like that when I grew up and started eating out at Chinese restaurants.

Lamb, and I still do.

Lasagna. My mom from Italy made wonderful lasagna but I wouldn't eat it until late teens because of the cottage cheese (ricotta)--yuck!

Carrots.....
For some reason I decided I hated carrots when I was about five.
Several years later we went to someone's house for dinner and carrots were served. My mom had taught us it was rude to not eat what we were served when not eating at home.
I ate the carrots and loved them.
I am wondering why my mom didn't teach me it was rude to not eat what she served???

Fettuccine Alfredo. My parents would make the boxed Pasta-Roni kind when I was growing up and it was clumpy and disgusting. I was forced to eat it and would often gag. I assumed I just didn't like Alfredo sauce until I was in college and had real Alfredo sauce!

I also thought I hated ricotta cheese because I didn't like lasagna or stuffed shells but I later figured out it was the Romano cheese in it that I didn't care for.

The only things I actively hated as a child that have stuck with me now is raw tomatoes and bell peppers. Everything else I've either grown to like or can tolerate but those two are things I absolutely won't eat under any circumstances.

Oh, forgot about "split pea soup". I told my mom that I was allergic to it. She asked how I knew; thinking quickly I told her "it made my hot under the arms". I have never lived that down in my family. Still don't like SPS.

Green peppers. My Mom made stuffed green peppers frequently, or at least to me it seemed to be frequent. They made the house stink. I would have liked the filling but the odor of the peppers permeated everything. I had to gag them down. Still hate green peppers. IMO, their strong odor contaminates any dish within ten feet. But I am an adult now and no green peppers are ever allowed to invade my castle! Anchovies are the only thing I can think of I didn't like as a kid and now enjoy. The rest, I still hate.

I can't really think of anything for me. But my hubby always thought he hated scalloped potatoes, brussels sprouts, green beans and asparagus until I made them.

Spaghetti, ham, and (of all things) shortbread! The former two were prepared perfectly fine, I just didn't develop a taste for them until I was an adult. The shortbread is strange... I think I tried a commercial shortbread cookie and thought it tasted strangely salty. Now, shortbread is one of my favorite cookies.

Nothing. I know what I like, and I know what I dislike. The respective lists have changed considerably as I've evolved from a very-picky-eater child to an eats-almost- everything adult, but I can't off-hand think of something I incorrectly "thought" I didn't like at a given stage of my life.

My Dad didn't like eggplant. He had not liked it as a child and would never even taste it when my mother served it at dinner. But one time, in a restaurant, he ordered a dish that, unbeknownst to him, contained eggplant. (I'm sure you can guess where this story is going.) He raved about how delicious it was ... and then he asked the waiter about the mysterious ingredient that was so tasty. When he was informed that it was eggplant, he refused to take another bite! I've always remembered that episode as an example of how we sometimes trust our food prejudices rather than our senses.

Zucchini (prepared in a stewed tomato sauce) and ham. I hated both. Today I live on grilled or steamed zucchini and I don't mind ham though find it salty, primarily deli ham or Honey Baked. Canned ham was what my mother made (rarely, thankfully) and that jelled goo with cloves & pineapple evokes nausea just to think of it!

I was also a very picky eater as a child. Later, when I was married and served some of the things I wouldn't eat at a child to my mother she would say "But you never would eat that when you were little". How do you tell your mom that now you know how good things can be when they're not overcooked?

When I was a kid, I didn't want anything green, onions, seafood, hated parsnips, saurkraut, liver. Now I eat it all and love roasted parsnips.

As a child I ate liver and onions, turnip greens and mustard greens, okra, eggplant, tomatoes. But no way, no how would I eat yellow crookneck squash. My parents had a garden and grew tons of squash. I can still remember sitting at the dining room table at my Grandfather's at Sunday lunch and refusing to eat the squash. Now, I could absolutely eat my weight in yellow squash.

Cheese! I couldn't stand the taste nor the smell of cheese. I don't remembered when I grew to love cheese and still love cheese. I guess, our taste do change.

Mushrooms....I thought they tasted like dirt. Love them now, but NOT raw, that's still yucky.

Oatmeal....the texture/consistency reminded me of unpleasant things...love it now, but I'm a snob about it....steel-cut preferred, most instant conjures up the old feelings.....

I thought I hated mayonaise because I grew up in the upper midwest where Miracle Whip ruled. Turns out I hate Miracle Whip, not mayonaise.

I hated pizza and doughnuts.I also didn't like most, if not all, red meats, especially deli roast beef. As an adult, I still don't like doughnuts or red meats. Now pizza, on the other hand... yum.

I'm with NTT on the cheese - I would not eat that or any other dairy products as a child, possibly because they upset my stomach. Now I seem to be able to tolerate them, and I do love certain cheeses, but not all of them. I still do not drink milk or eat almost anything with milk in it.

Avocados. My Uncle Jim lived in Orange County and had two trees. He would send my dad boxes of them. I did not actually try one until I was an adult and realized that I loved them.
