Help w/ Interior Color - Tan/Khaki/Brown

We are in the process of building a home and need to choose an interior color. We are painting about 7000 square feet so I can't afford to make the wrong decision!!! I originally chose RH Cappuccino but I am having trouble with SW color matching. It keeps having alot of green undertones. I feel like I need to do something different as I am currently very frustrated with this color. I want to so something maybe 3rd down on a color chart Â I donÂt want it to look "builder beige." Please let me know if anyone has any suggestions - I would GREATLY appreciate it!!!

If you want RH Cappuccino, have it color matched in Ben Moore paint. Have it made it a quart first. In the base and sheen you will ultimately use in the house.

If the builder dictates SW, you'll never get a color match to RH Cappuccino without it showing with a green undertone in your house.

I don't know what you mean by "3rd down on a color chart". I think you might mean that you want the value of the color you choose to be that of the average color that holds the third position down on a typical paint color strip. Value is the lightness and darkness of a color. Not to be confused with intensity. Intensity deals with how pure or muted a color is -- how grayed or dulled.

If you are using value when selecting paint color, you need to understand LRV. See link below.

THE POSITION A COLOR HOLDS ON A STRIP OF COLORS MEANS NOTHING relative to any other strip or anything else for that matter. Color strips and fan decks are simply a method to organize color and that method of organization does not provide any guidance or specific direction to coordinating, conceptualizing, or developing color schemes.

Can't even count on the colors to be arranged in a literal light to dark sequence on the strips -- the colors are arranged from light to dark, yes, but it's not necessarily the SAME COLOR mixed to different values.

You can have a half dozen colors that sit in the "third one down" spot and they would have absolutely nothing in common -- they would be at all different intensities and have a variety of LRVs, etc.

Have to know how to evaluate individual colors. Understanding LRV is a good first step.

Thanks for your input funcolors! And thank you for the link - I am a newbie at all of this paint stuff. Why is it that the green tone appears with the SW paint? You got what I meant by "3rd down"! Do you have any recommendations for SW colors that would give me a deeper khaki look without the green? Thanks for all of your help!

Eliza, thanks to you and others--I painted my kitchen tobacco road. I was looking for a color to match an accent wall in my family room, which I had painted a rich brown called tyler taupe. We ended up painting the den in bm decatur buff painting over the tyler taupe, as I had a hard time finding the perfect color to match the accent wall. I'm really happy with how the two colors compliment each other! They both are gold toned, but the decatur buff is a darker gold with more brown in it. The colors transition around a corner, so visually they are not right up against each other, if that makes sense. We are going to look for a new camera today, and I promise to post back on this thread tonight if we are successful!

I would take the paint back to the store and tell them that it is a nice color but too dark. Depending on the base they started with they may be able to help you by adding a quart or ratio of same base white. It can be iffy, my daughter has done it several times with success. The downfall would probably be you would never be able to match it again.

Bleeker looks just like what I have on my walls now (in the day, -- the "good" time of day for it.) susan, that sounds really promising because peach is one of my colors and I was secretly hoping for a peachy tan. mythreesons -- thank you soooo much! I just ordered a Capistrano corbel. A million thanks for going the extra mile and contacting your cabinetmaker. Can't wait to go out and get all these paints, and after all this wonderful help, I can see I'm going to have to finally learn how to post photos in case anyone wants to see the results.

I tried to post a picture, but am having trouble with a few things. First of all, my photo skills are lacking and the true colors of the current wall color and the sample of Wheeling Neutral are just not showing up they way they appear IRL. The current wall color is much more yellow. In my picture, the two colors look quite similar, when they really aren't at all. The other problem is the size of the picture. I inserted the picture by dragging and dropping from my pictures library and the picture is huge. Do I need to resize before I insert a photo? This is my first attempt at including a photo since the change over to Houzz. Then, of course, there's that whole thing with my photos becoming 'property' of Houzz. I have been comparing my samples of Lenox Tan and Wheeling Neutral and I think I've figured out what didn't work with the Lenox Tan in our BR with the bedding I'm going to use. Altho I do like the richness of LT, the color needs to be grayer and I think I've achieved that with the WN. Could I go darker? I suppose the answer would be yes, but then the color is just about matching the grayed brown in the pillow sham and that's not necessarily my goal. The colors should just blend, right? I want a nice background color that works with the overall color scheme.

I recently had my bedroom painted with BM Aura Hush, and I like it a lot more than I expected to ! (it was kind of a rushed decision ...).

It's because of SW's colorants vs. Ben Moore's. RH colors were actually hatched from Ben Moore. The original RH color chips you could match up spot-on to Ben Moore chips. I don't know who makes RH's paint these days, just always have them matched at BenM because SW rarely can get it. They do okay with Silver Sage, but Silver Sage has kind of gotten a bit passe.

Look at the new SW Concepts of Color Collection. flatcoat's room is stunning. Love the Affinity palette for Aura. Totally worth getting a sample of that one to see what undertones, if any, pop up in the context of your space and lighting. Hush has an LRV of 59 if that helps.

I am considering SW Latte - does anyone have a thought on that color? I have seen several pics online and it looks beautiful. I would love to hear feedback.

love the Hush. I saw that in one of their brochures where they did a bedroom in Hush and one of their whites(can;t remember which. It was beautiful.

Look at the Aura Affinity color Cotswold. To me it doesn't have any undertones. I am going to use it in my foyer and have an actual paint sample of it. I too, was looking for no undertones.

When you get to the link check out the rooms called pure harmony and click on nature inspired. There is a bathroom that uses that color.

If you are looking at SW Latte, just trot down to SW and have them mix you up a $5 test quart. It gives you almost a quart of the sample color to put on foam boards (available at Walmart or any craft store) to try in your new home. I use it directly on my walls to sample color. It's only $5. Give it a go.
