Trompe L'Oeuil Cake :-)

A dear friend had a 50th birthday party today, and I asked him if he would like me to make the cake and if so what kind. He replied that it would be fun to have a cake that looked like a Black Forest Cake and tasted like a lemon meringue pie. OK, we have a wierd sense of humour :-)

Putting a little thought into it and doing a test run earlier this week to see how well it would work, I pulled it off fairly well today.

The cake was a normal vanilla sponge cake, with food colouring to make it look like a chocolate cake. All the time I was working with it in the assembly phase even I expected it would taste like chocolate, because it was the same exact colour as my normal chocolate sponge.

The filling was my tangy lemon meringue pie filling, tinted to end up the same colour as morello cherry filing. There were four thin layers of cake and three of filling.

The "whipped cream" was a meringue based frosting made with hot syrup poured over whipped egg whites. I added a little brown tint to the syrup for that off white whipped cream colour instead of detergent white meringue. I piped shell edges and swirls on the top as well.

The top was garnished with long stemmed maraschino cherries, as I would a Black Forest Cake. I was really thrilled with how well it looked.

The cake was thoroughly enjoyed by the birthday boy and guests- I had dozens of compliments. What was really funny were the comments on how delicious the "cherry" filling was. Many were genuinely surprised to hear that with the exception of the chocolate writing on the top and the garnish cherries, that no cherries or chocolates were harmed in the making of that cake ;-) I guess we expect to taste what we see!
