Pretty room!

Well -- if you simply placed the mirror on the vertical (for now!) it might sit a bit better in the room! I do think that a bigger mirror (maybe even a round one?) might work better -- and artworks might compete with the gorgeous armoire!

Next -- Nay is my vote on the fireplace screen. Sorry -- just seems too short and too "busy" next to the armoire. If you really need one -- perhaps a taller black one -- very very plain??

Yes -- the rug is too small .... sorry ...... perhaps a much larger one with a touch of black in it????

Great armoire.

It looks like the seating is placed about right. I understand - I have a door that throws off my sofa from my TV.

Drapes - 2 panels on each end - get an extra panel and possibly put it in the middle covering the drywall.

Mirror - too small - what about a cool sunburst mirror

Rug - seagrass trimmed in black - bigger - don't know if you have kids or not. Not the most comfy for lounging around on the floor. I have one in the kitchen - and one kid said ohhhh, it feels like a foot massage. LOL

You could possibly use your ottoman as a coffee table if you wanted with a red throw on top - with a tray for magazines and remotes.

White ceiling fan - you have such rich colors in your room - ....you know!!

Yes -- an excellent thought about the ceiling fan -- really really needs to be in darker richer tones and much larger to match the scale of the room and its decor.

You really need a large work of art/painting with a few bold colors to bring the focal point back to the fireplace. Love the big cabinet but its stealing all the attention. Ditto the idea of some drapes/curtains in a rich color. Pull a color from your new painting and add some interesting pillows on sofa. Buy yourself a nice green plant when you are done.

Your cabinet doesn't look quite right in that niche. It looks like you need to combine the niche and mantle into one unified fireplace wall built-in, with cabinetry and mantle/surround in the same finish. Then tall art (not a mirror) over the fireplace.

could the armoire go there? it is so very beautiful but i agree the niche doesn't seem right for it

I really do love the armoire -- and its place in the niche! Once the room is more settled around -- it will be a very lovely focal point! :)

The fireplace screen is gone. Teacat was right - it was too short and too busy. I will also look for a larger rug with a touch of black - anyone know of one?

The ceiling fan will be replaced and I love the example one! We just moved in last July and we haven't gotten that far yet.

I can't seem to find a piece of art that works with the armoire. I guess I would be looking for a very simple piece with the red/green/gold tones of the room. Any ideas if I decide to go the art direction?

The armoire will need to stay in the niche. There is no other spot for it in the room and I love it dearly!

I like the round mirror but what would I put on each side?

What you have is a great foundation. Beautiful really. I would suggest not going too matchey on the art. To me art needs to be personal. Look for something you love that doesn't clash. So not knowing your personal taste it would be hard to suggest art. That being said. Think outside the box, architectural elements make beautiful art. Iron pieces, painted ceiling tins etc. I also love taking a terrific personal photo (or 2) and blowing it up, making it black & white and finishing it off with a simple white matt and black frame. What you puts also depends on how formal/casual you want this to feel. You said it is your living room, do you also have a family room, or does this serve dual purpose?

I too would love to know what the wall behind the sofa is like and what is on it. I think the armoire could be better suited there. Is there a tv in the armoire? can the room be arranged so that the armoire and fireplace are directly across from each other and the furniture arranged so that they are positioned to view either? I am thinking the sofa in front of the windows and the chair(s) directly across from and facing the sofa? I would love to then see the niche built out with some shelves for a more custom look. The armoire is so tucked in there I feel you loose some of it like the side views. It is fine where it is really, just another thought.

I'd like to suggest painting the niche the reddish? color from the armoire, and adding pillows and accessories of that same color.

Hmmmnn...liking the idea of painting the niche. The wall behind the sofa is a "pony wall". In case that is not a technical term it is a wall that separates the kitchen from the living room with two rectangular cutouts (saddles) so that you can see through to the kitchen. There is a doorway to the kitchen at each end of the wall. Due to the cutouts there is no way to put the armoire there.

The round mirror would be visually "strong" enough to stand on its own accord -- depending on its size against the actual size of the space available.

Then you could simply add a tall candlestick on each side of the mantel.

Here's some artworks by Steve Thoms that might work with your cabinet ...... but my vote still goes to a round or tall mirror that would not compete with the cabinet. I would add additional small botanical artworks around the whole space (including the kitchen area .....) Maybe one of the artworks suggested might work there.

Look for possible rugs -- including the sisal (banded in black) in sites like O.....verstock.com or perhaps Macy's? (this site will often baulk at that shopping site's name .... due to business "issues")

Does the armoire hold a TV, or is it just a decorative cabinet? That will matter as to what you do, imo.

No valance needed, imo, but I think I would either hang panels over that middle spot between the windows, OR create a piece that looks like a continuation of the header for the blinds to span that spot, then paint out that strip of wall to match the blinds color. If there is a bottom sill on the windows, I would continue that as well.

Right now my first thought is to flip the chair and a half and the ottoman, and slide the whole group to the right. I think at the moment the chair is in an awkward position in front of the fireplace, making the fireplace seem like an afterthought. But again, that might depend on what the armoire holds.
