I would have tried whipped cream -- never thinking of cool whip -- which is probably a much better idea due to its properties!

Just wanted to say that you might want to have little bowls of sprinkles, nuts, cherries, etc., for him to put on the cake. My nieces always loved the decorating part. :O)

thanks party, sounds like fun! I'm planning on a cookie crust bottom, ice cream layer, then cake. Probably just one layer each of cake and ice cream? probably. Sprinkles and.... chocolate sauce. I'm not carried away am I? Yes, yes, I am.

Yes, I'd say cookie crust, ice cream and cake, creamy frosting and some chocolate or hot fudge, how can you go wrong?

That's ok, he takes after me and leave words out. You get what he means though.

I'd suggest crumbling the cookie part to make crumbs. A frozen cookie is going to be a bear to cut when it's time to serve the cake--you'll need a chain saw--LOL! You can always put a few small, whole cookies on top to decorate it. I'd go with real whipped cream, especially if there will be a bunch of young guests--some react so badly to food chemicals, and Cool whip is SO artificial (and tastes even worse when frozen than defrosted)

Rob, I agree with azalea that a cookie crust will be difficult to cut. It will also be difficult to eat on a serving plate. Using crumbs would work much better.

I don't like whipped cream or Cool Whip so can't add much to that part of the equation. :(

I'm copying a "bigger chain" who has the oreo crust on their ice cream cake ;) Maybe I'll just be sure not to smash it down too hard? so it can be cut. I'm still deciding on the topping. I might even use a "fluffier" frosting (Ree Drummond) that looks like it might stay stablized (with flour in it?!) well through freezing, and somewhat thawing. It won't be frozen when it's cut.

I did think whipped cream, but I can't see how it'll stand up well, even without freezing it, just adding it right before serving it? I thought about using a can of Reddi wip, cream out of a can that you spray on? It's pretty good, tastewise and it might work for much the same reasons as cool whip. Maybe.

He just likes to try to make his own cake. Part of the fun! He doesn't care what it looks like, yet. Wait'll he's been cooking as long as ann's or calillo's son. Then, he'll care. Probably.
