I don't think tufting on the back, I like the shape now. Perhaps you can skirt it so it doesnt work against the ottoman legs if you want it in that room. I really like the fabric color you picked.

Those style chairs make a great upholstery project; not to hard, but with enough difficulty to make the end result very satisfying. I often making contrasting or complementary double cording for a simple piece like that. It just nicely outlines the shape and introducing a bit of another coordinating fabric. Then you can use the same cording fabric to make throw pillows, if you want.

I don't usually tuft those backs in the traditional sense, but I have done a few pieces that had just two or three buttons to lend some visual interest to an otherwise flat expanse, especially if you're doing a solid fabric. I don't have any pictures, but you might find some ideas searching Google images.

I love your chair-it certainly has a lot of character. I think the green fabric will be perfect in your room. Does it currently have a cording? I think you could find a green fabric just a little bit darker than your fabric to use as cording around the back and seat of the chair.I think the seat would look great tufted or the back-IMO.

I agree with equest17 about the cording. It definitely needs a substantial visual line of finishing touch.
Looking at your style, I do not think tufting the back will fit you. I myself would not like that either. But having such a long back it needs something. I would add maching narrow rectangle pillow for lower back.

Thanks for all of your responses! I switched out my leather recliner and the new chair so the legs don't fight with each other. It actually looks much better! I'm worried about trying to skirt it though since this is my first attempt at reupholstering. The chair currently doesn't have any cording but I think I might attempt that? I think it would add that finished detail like you all said! Thanks again...when I get done I'll post a pic of it!

On a first upholstery project, using double cording might actually give you a bit of wiggle room. It's great for covering up little mistakes and puckers along the stapled edge and around the show wood (finished wood arms and legs, etc.). It's quite easy to make if you buy a double cording foot. The 1/4" foot is perfect with standard 5/32 vinyl or tissue cording. Skipping the skirt is a good idea; this chair has nice clean lines and I think looks better without one; also, skirts can be tricky to lay flat and even.

I love it, but I wouldn't hide those legs. These types of chairs do well with needlepoint covers, too, if you have any pieces lying around that never made it into pillows.

Great find! I love the green fabric you chose to cover and I would definitely NOT skirt such great lines. I also don't think this sort of chair normally has cording, although I guess that's personal preference. It looks authentic now, without cording. I have seen them with partially padded and upholstered arms too, from where arms meet the back to about halfway down the arms, if you felt like trying that.

I like the idea of the low-back pillow to add interest... also very easily changed out.

Your living room looks so pretty and inviting and I'm loving what the touch of green will do for it too.

Actually, I think cording at the bottom of the seat and along the back seam would add some interest, while still in keeping with the style. It would give it a more polished look. IMO

Here's a somewhat similar chair I reupholstered for a friend a few years ago. You can see the double cording along the front deck. Because the face fabric had an all-over print, she didn't want contrasting cording, but you can get an idea of the look with cording and a smooth inside back (no tufting).

Nice CL find! It's going to look good. Keep it simple but do use some cording or gimp to give it a finished look.

Equest, you did a fine job on that chair and the paisley fabric is stunning with the antique wood.
