Need Quick Help - CL Find - Do I or Don't I? - PICS

Spotted this CL sofa this am and my husband is literally driving right now from Nashville home and on his way he could stop, look at it and purchase it. This would be for my Master bedroom to sit in front of a 4 poster bed. I think it may work but not sure. What do you think? It is 11 years old and size and style wise I like it. But I'm skittish because I made such a bad decision if you guys recall with my master when I purchased furniture that I thought I loved and then turned out not to like it. I'm not too crazy about the cream color and I guess I could get the fabric redone but then that means spending a lot more money and I could probably find something else later. The owner said that the couch has faded some and that there is yellowing near the cording. Oy vey, I hate making decisions! Worth it or not?

I think it's very cute, but I don't know the rest of your room . . .what don't you like about the cream? Do you trust your DH to look at it/sit in it/inspect it?

I'd talk down the price.

Anele, the room is pretty much a blank canvas. We recently put our four poster back up after selling the furniture I did not like. Here are pics of the bed from our old house. I don't have a complete picture of the bed. Ignore the bedding as we no longer use it. Also here is the end table that I purchased off CL for my guest room but we have now moved it into the master. There is no color or anything on the walls and I'm still working on the direction I want to go in. I do know that I would like to have seating in the room and want to put something at the foot of the bed if that helps. OH yeah, I'm still looking for a dresser and have decided that I'm going to use a skirted table or mirrored chest for my side of the bed.

I guess I'm concerned about the cream getting dirty but that is my only objection.

From the looks of the pic above. I'd say our houses might be of similar vintage. Do you know when yours was built? I look the more 'formal' ones like yours, too, but old pine has had my number for a long time.... I wish that my upstairs vanity had been pine (as the seller noted on CL) but it turned out to be poplar, so didn't take stain quite like I had hoped. The pieces above are in my area, so I hope to hear back from the seller soon. I hate it when something is just posted, but you never get a reply from the seller. I saw this last month, and wrote a few times, but never heard back. I'd sell something I have now to be able to get this! Look at the grain of the wood in the bottom photo. Dad has GOT to take a more active stance. Bio-Mom doesn't get to dictate all of the terms just because she has primary custody. The problems you describe are serious, and heading down a nasty, difficult road. If Bio-Mom doesn't change her ways, this child will be one of those 'never grow up, live at home' adults who can't hold down a job or maintain an adult relationship. I know Momma loves her 'baby', but it's going too far, waaay too far. Is there any indication that the child isn't capable of doing for himself? Any signs of a developmental disability? Since he's old enough to be in school, I'd schedule a conference with his teacher. Or rather, I'd make sure your husband does it, then show up there yourself "to be a supportive wife and stepmother." It'll be walking a tightrope, but it's necessary. See what types of difficulties he's having in school, of if he's able to cope there, but just not at home. Whether or not to include Bio-Mom is a tricky issue -- Maybe talk to the teacher first on the phone so you get an idea of whether or not she has the same concerns you do? If she does, let her be the one to take the lead with Bio-Mom on ways to encourage independence and self-reliance. If the teacher isn't concerned, it could be that stepson's behavior is specific to your household -- which would be a whole 'nother can of worms. (If you have the same last name as the child, odds are good the teacher won't even know you're the step-mom until you tell her -- Which of course, you'll do at the 'appropriate' time.) There are ways to encourage a child's independence without saying "You have to do it yourself." Try showing him once, then asking him if he can do the next one. (Make sure it's something small and simple where his chances of success are near 100%.) If he's slow to comply, be 'unavailable' to help for a few minutes -- maybe "as soon as I get back from the bathroom" or "take the clothes out of the dryer" or "stir the pot for dinner." He'll probably rather do it himself than wait. Or tell him how much the 2 year old looks up to him since he's so much bigger, and ask him if he can show the little guy how to do something. (Never mind that it could be the reverse...) Letting him know what to do, then walking away and leaving him to fend for himself can be a very effective strategy. Praising small advances, looking for good behaviors to reward, and admiring 'big boy' things may also encourage the types of behaviors you want to see. Good luck - and hang in there. Above all, try to remember that the little boy's self-crippling behaviors are a result of his mother's actions, not (yet) a character trait.

I'm glad to hear that the LED lights are working for you. It sounds like you have a much bigger space than we do, with only 2 more lights. I think this was perhaps our biggest mistake -- just too many of these lights. (As I mentioned, I was worried that LEDs wouldn't put out enough light). Maybe if we had only installed 4 of them, the amount of light would be ok. To reduce the number to 4 at this point would require completely re-placing the lights and rewiring. I wonder also if the increased number of lights in our smaller space is amplifying the effect of the flickering? i.e. maybe it wouldn't be noticeable if the lights were further apart? The housing and dimmer switch we have are both on the compatible list on the Cree website. All 7 of the lights are connected to the same dimmer switch. So I'm not sure what the problem is. When they are on at full power, they don't buzz or flicker. We had friends over yesterday and at full power they thought the lights looked great. (It wasn't too bright for them). Then I dimmed them and they didn't think the buzzing was too bad. They also didn't really notice much flickering. But then I started waving my arms around and they were shocked. The strobe effect when the lights were dimmed made my kitchen seem like a disco! Cbjmidwood, when you dim your lights and wave your arms around, is there any strobing?

It is a lot of wood. If you are going to paint the cabinets, you need to paint them all. A two toned look has never been my favorite, but I just don't think it is going to make matters any better in here. A good paint job that lasts and doesn't chip is rather expensive. And are these cabinets even high enough quality to merit the money spent on a quality paint job? And will these counters look right with your paint color? I presume these pics are from a staged showing and that this is not your furniture, am I correct? I don't think the lighting, wall color, or furniture in the pics are doing this home justice. They are all so drab that the floors are contrasting even more. Before painting original wood doors, I'd get your furniture in. Get your rugs in - if you have any. Play with lighting, decor, and a pure white wall color to make this great old home come alive a bit more. Look at the spindles on the railing in your middle picture. That bright white cuts through the sea of wood. I think it is key to lifting your eyes of the floor and seeing more than wood everywhere. You need to bring the focus up.

Deb, the cream already looks to be very dirty. I'm not sure what caused the yellowing. Could be cigarette smoke, in which case it would have permeated the whole piece.

For me, it would depend on the maker of the piece and how expensive it would be to reupholster.

Yes, ditto what Parma said.

I also think since you don't know which direction you want to go in colorwise, it would just be best to wait.

I'd pass, esp. since YOU won't be able to see it unless you are in love with the lines and trust your DH's judgment re: comfort-- keeping in mind you'd reupholster.

Very pretty bed and table-- maybe you should just keep the bed!

Thanks Anele and Parma for the quick responses. I think I'm going to pass since clearly I have doubts. I spoke to my hubby after I posted the last comment and he seemed to have doubts as well. So will keep up the search.

FYI, the bed posted is the one that we kept and recently put back up in the master and moved the table posted to our master. I want to get it right this time so thanks for helping me to work it out pretty quickly :) Thanks for the compliments on the table.

I love your 4 poster! Think you made the right decision on that sofa. Have you considered a bench for the foot of the bed?

Natal, I've been looking at benches as well but so far, have not found anything on CL that will work.

I think it was a good decision to pass on that. There is something about the curve of the arms that bothers me.
