Revelation-- too much furniture

Ok. So my husband is gone for a week. I am using the opportunity to go through and get rid of and reorganize his life and mine a bit. I'm overstepping some of the bounds that I rarely step over out of respect for him.

And if you read my earlier post, I got rid of two bags of garbage. I think this is simply the fact that he really has a hard time throwing things away combined with his stashing tendencies. He stashes things here and there. TOday I found all sorts of reciepts in a file folder for the ham radio club. The reciepts? For carpeting for the cat box. Go figure.

Anyways. Although I got rid of a lot, it really wasn't as much as I expected. I thought there was more junk and clutter on his side of the bed.

In looking it all over though, I have come to the conclusion that we have too much furniture. Too many big pieces. HIs and Mine and ours all competing. I amhoping an addition with very little furniture bought will help. We have decided we are going to buy some big book cases. (I think we have decided and agreed on that- but sometimes what I think isn't what WE thought.). But other than that- we are going to use what furniture we have on hand.

I hope that helps. I hope we do our addition.

In the meantime, now what? Live with it as is? Put it in the shed or garage? We have a big big shed. Maybe get rid of some of it? See if I can rearrange it? (I doubt it though).

And as an added thought- have you had an revelations like this yourselves?

I had a lot of furniture too and have been getting rid of it little by little, although I could use new bookcases. But the key is the RIGHT furniture for the house. We never had the right furniture...it was cheap stuff that we made due with until we moved, but we're always moving. Next house (we will be moving) I am buying FOR THE HOUSE, for the specific areas!

Relevations? Always...that's probably why I have furniture I don't want anymore. heehee

I can't say it was exactly the same. My h usband had a hip replacement two years ago this months. He did good aqnd they had had him going up and down stairs before he came home.

The saturday before he was to see the surgeon on Monday and throw away his cane, he walked to the mailbox. We were in the process of recovering from a NICE snowstorm. He found a icy patch and broke his thigh bone, the one with the nice new piece of metal.

when he came home from the hospital this time there was no using of the stairs or putting any weight on that leg for four months.

The computer room was our new bedroom. The puters were in the dining area and the table made a loverly landing pad. The piano was next to the table. With the fun my hands were giving me, I didn't play much.

Then our grandson and his wife and babies asked to move in. He rebuilt the upstairs. 'Nother story.

Anyway, Eight rooms of furniture had to be combined intofive, including the bedroom. My large couch went to a daughter with rambousious boys. The piano went to a great neice who wanted to learn to play. My large dining table went to my minister cousin for use either at the church or at his home, just take it. Kathy also saw the cookbooks I was trying to recycle and asked about them.
thank you Kathy. Another cousin's daughter took all the surplus song books, cause Kiera wasn't up to plahing them yet.

Then my love seat left and I had another dining table and left too. I have only chairs that rock or swivel left and our eating counter.

For large gatherings my DSIL has long folding table which work alright with table cloths.

OK It's TMI, but we had to get rid of stuff. We're doing ok, but another granson has moved in. He leaves for KY next week so it shouldn't be a problem.

gott go, Ds is coming to make me walk.

Well let me see..... In our MB we have mahaogany, walnut, cherry, and aged pine for the casegoods. The floor is 40 yr old golden oak. In my world, all woods go together. If they are loved and inherited, then they go together even more! You can keep the overall feel lighter by keeping the walls, trim, WT, rugs (or carpeting), bedding and wall art in lighter colors. We have sky blue walls, simple white WT, white bedding and most of the art is matted in white or has lighter backgrounds. Wonderful, colorful Karastans on the floor. The room is neither grim nor stuffy. Some would think old fashioned, some would envy the contents and the feeling of an established home that they lend. The sewing cab could make a great bedside table if the height is right. Wall mounted lighting is easy if a side table doesn't easily fit a lamp. One of our nightstands has a bottom shelf that makes a great stash for ready to be read books. Did I mention that not one piece in our room matches any other piece except that they are all wood? LOL! I love seeing unmatched rooms. Matched bedroom sets make me verrrrrry uncomfortable and I can't help but think that I am living in a motel/hotel room.

I need help in this area, please I will send pics! I have been handed down some furniture that is old and have a few pieces from my ex husband that just aren't my taste. I hate my black leather couches, but this is what I'm working with. I want to lighten up the room! I want to keep my coffee table dark bc it's in great shape. The tv stand is being replaced with a black wood entertainment table this afternoon. I was initially thinking, pain corner hutch a cream and distress and maybe do the tv stand and dining room table chairs the same? My walls are the lightest sage you could imagine...people don't know they're "green". I do have a fun POP of color by my front door and wondered if I could use that very subtle sage as the top of my tv stand and/or dining room table to tie that piece in? I'm a newbie. Have painted plenty of furniture, but now just have so much to imagine and I'm terrible at that! Tv stand will be the Walmart photo I posted. Used. Tried to show all my pieces and the wall color against the white ceiling. Help please!!!!

Attached is a picture of the piece that I have which will be going in the room. It will be repainted so I am open to ideas! As far as a sideboard, I again am open to ideas. I would say my "style" is more casual and comfortable than formal. Thanks!!

Help with furniture layout - is sectional too much?

Essentially we are considering very similar layout to the seller’s (sectional instead of couch and possible coffee table), but different placement of armchair/recliner, no bookshelves or mirror, and the addition of small dining bar which could go up against a wall if needed.

I have two too many DR chairs. But six of them match the table. And one of them is the tough commercial kind that's VERY sturdy and easy to sit on, and easy to clean, so DS sits on that at dinner. So I don't want to get rid of any of them.

But too many pieces of furniture is a big problem for me, too. (for one thing, it creates places to put stuff)

I'm getting rid of one bookshelf--where I'm gonna put those books, I'm not sure. I think I need to get tough and toss them, but right now they're safely boxed up. And some of them, the music books, I KNOW I want to keep. I'm thinking I'll get a shelf made to go on top of the piano. With a door, so no dusting.

But we could really do w/ much fewer pieces of furniture, too.

I'm trying to coax myself to be ruthless, but as I said, some of it, I'm just not willing to ditch.
