Less commitment than a sofa but making a major impact, club chairs in vivid hues can work wonders

When it comes to our home, my husband is allergic to color. While the source of his color aversion is a mystery, I think he’s (wisely) worried mostly about investing in a rug or a piece of furniture that he’ll tire of. To him color belongs on pillows, artwork and maybe a throw. Otherwise he’s happy to live in a world of gray, ivory and ecru.

I, on the other hand, revel in the cheerfulness of color. Considering that the first sofa I ever bought was Pepto Bismol pink, it’s probably a very good thing that I have him to tone me down a bit, just as I balance his tendency toward a putty-colored palette.

I think the most successful way we’ve found to integrate our tendencies can be seen in our living room, where vintage bronze wall art brings rust-colored hues into the room. While I originally used red patterned pillows to create color flow within the space, it still seemed too blah. So I was pleasantly surprised when my husband agreed to a bright pop of color in the form of a red leather club chair and ottoman. These key pieces use volume and texture to anchor the red elsewhere in the space.

Despite my love of color, I was actually shocked to see just how well it all worked. So with that in mind, I’ve chosen eight spaces with colorful club chairs to inspire you.

REFINED LLC

Without this pair of red club chairs, your eye would wonder where to focus. The tufting is a textural element that adds further interest. And the only thing needed to pull the red throughout the space? A single book. Genius.

Baxter Design Group sourced these midcentury chairs from a local vintage shop, then reupholstered them in vibrant orange. The chairs are a focal point in this open floor plan while creating color flow along with the artwork and rug.

A cozy nursing chair in rosy fuchsia welcomes a baby with cheer. It anchors the pink hue that’s woven throughout without making the room feel like the Barbie Dreamhouse.

I love the mix of decor styles in this space! A contemporary couch plays beautifully with a midpile shag rug, a midcentury-inspired arc lamp and a Danish modern coffee table. But the kicker has to be the gorgeous Italian cane chairs upholstered in a bright sea-foam green. Together with the brightly colored pillows, they create a beachy, relaxed feel in this Los Angeles home.

If you’re trying to mix color and pattern in your space, start by working with no more than three colors, and focus on stripes and geometric patterns, which can often work as neutrals.

The only one I really liked was #2, the one with the orange chairs. I think that worked because they are a soft orange. Almost everything else looked too bright. I liked the Italian cane chairs, but not in that room, which seemed to lack cohesion (IMHO).
