Small iron grill pan

I purchased a cast iron grill pan. I can hardly lift it out of the oven, it is so heavy. Since I am the only one left to cook for, I really need a small one. Does anybody know where I can get such an item? I have tried locally, but we are a small community and I have been unable to find one. Any help? I love grilled vegetables--esecially the red peppers. They become so sweet. I also have been unable to find a mandolin (sp) to slice vegetables. Thanks in advance. Barb

Hi Barb. There are actually quite a few small cast iron grill pans available. It really depends on just how small you want. I have one that is sort of the size to hold a grilled cheese sandwich. I have a link for one that size, that they promote as a small panini grill.

When looking around I saw what they call a small grill pan that has no ridges that looks pretty interesting. It's small enough to sear just a few veggies but also big enough to do multiple items. Looks fairly light.

Barb, since there is only you, a 14 inch cast iron fry pan
should do all that you need. I recently bought a new one,
(Lodge brand),and I absolutely LOVE it. Even a 12 incher
should work for just you. Best of luck.

Oh. No, Karen, you don't want that one with induction. For induction you want single sided that's flat on the bottom, rather than anything that has a ridge on the bottom. My double sided griddle/grills will heat on my induction, which has a very generous pot detector (they don't on lesser models), but the air underneath gets very hot and can cause burns. I also worry than in actual use, it could get hot enough to break the glass. All induction makers warn not to use pans with a ridge. If you do, anything bad that happens is arguably user error. There are quite a few single sided grill pans in the price range you're look at. Check out this low sided square one. I don't know if the low sides is what you were looking for, but I thought it might be.

Grill pan or George Foreman

I have both a George Foreman grill & an old-fashioned well-seasoned Lodge cast-iron grill pan. The George Foreman grill is currently residing in the basement, while my Lodge lives on in the kitchen. For $20-$25 tops, the Lodge will grill everything from steaks to sea scallops, leaving those lovely grill marks & true "grill" taste & texture. George Foreman is more of a "steamer". And really, my Lodge pan seasoned up fairly quickly. It doesn't take much. Just some vegetable oil or shortening (like Crisco) & some heating & cooling time. You end up with a fabulous piece of non-stick cooking equipment that just requires a no-soap scrub for a fraction of what you'd pay for something more "frou frou".

I would go with cast iron as well. Cast iron is actually very easy to care for as long as you know how. - Never use soap on it except perhaps during initial cleaning and seasoning. - Scrape with a metal spatula right after use and get either steel wool or one of these abrasive scouring pads to scrub under hot water if necessary. - *Never* put a hot cast iron pan in water or pour water into/onto it. For me 90% of the time, a simple scrape and rinse is enough. Sometimes just wiping it down is sufficient. The key is to leave the oils on it because that's what keeps it from rusting. If your pan starts to look dull after washing, heat it up to dry it off completely and rub in a thin coat of oil using a paper towel. Applying heat is important to get rid of any moisture that could get trapped under the oil you are applying. After apply the oil, heat until it starts to smoke, then turn off and let cool. If you have anything crusted on, you can soak the pan for a bit but I'd avoid leaving it overnight. If you fill the pan with hot water and set it on the stove to boil for a minute or two, even the crustiest pan can be easily cleaned. Then just follow the steps above to apply a new thin coat of oil to refresh the seasoning. Good luck.

I cook exactly the same as LindaC on my cast iron grill pan, but I also use it for grilling fish, especially tuna and swordfish, although I have not bought swordfish in two years or so. Actually, I have two cast iron grill pans - the one with wide ridges I use for fish, and I use the narrow one for vegetables, and zucchini is my favorite, with mushrooms second, although I prefer mushrooms on the barbeque. Now that we are in Westchester instead of Venice, we tend to barbeque more because we are about three miles further from the beach and do not get the coastal fog quite as much, plus our access to the back yard is so much better than it was in Venice. My Aldi has a cast aluminum grill/ griddle (reversible) as a special buy for only $15. Maybe larger than you need? but it won't weigh nearly as much as cast iron.

Barb - FWIW
A few years ago I bought a cheap mandoline at Ross/TJ Maxx - I was thinking it was smaller/cheaper/more flexible than a food processor. It works well enough to be dangerous. The blades are very sharp but the part that holds the veggies is crap. Resulting in me holding the veggies in my hands gingerly and thinking to myself this is stupid. I looked into a better one the next time I was doing a kitchen splurge. Turned out the better mandoline and a cheap Target KA food processor cost the same. So I have a cheap mandoline and a cheap FP - sigh. I use the FP 90% of time, but I did use the mandoline a few nights ago to crinkle cut zucchini for chips.
