Battery exploded in DSIL-to-be's face today!

Its a good thing he is a quick thinker!

DSIL2B was at work, battery exploded in his face. He shut his eyes fast and managed to get to the work trailer and yelled for the boss. He said he could feel the acid running on his face. Boss got him to the sink and got his face washed off and took him to the ER.

ER was about a joke! They asked him all kinds of dumb questions, he tells them a battery blew up in his face, "oh what kind of material is that?" OMG!!! I am not a member of the medical profession but even I know battery acid is not good!! Isn't it sulferic acid?? I dunno. But they still asked more questions and then had to CALL someone to find out how to clean the burns on his face and head?! He has a cut on the side of his face and some burns on his forehead and head. His eyes are irritated and they didn't even flush them, just put drops in them and said if you have more problems go see an eye doctor!! My gosh what a stupid excuse for a supposedly wonderful hospital!!

DD is saying thanks for having a guardian angel on his shoulder this morning!

This could have been so horrible! He could have ended up blind!

Has anyone really seen Corning Ware or VISIONS cookware explode?

Yes, it happened to my wife and I today, November 27, 2012. The dish was being used for the second time only. My wife had made a lasagna in it. She took the lasagna out of the oven, and about 1 minute later, we heard the sound of pieces of glass landing on the floor in front of the stove. The shards of glass traveled about 8 feet from the dish. In the attached picture you can see the dish is on a metal tray, which was put under the glass dish in case some cheeze bubbled over. It was set on top of the stove, on the two front burners which were cold to my touch. So I'll be getting my money back for the dish, and I'll be asking for the cost of the Lasagna to, which was worth more then the dish. Elsewhere I have read that the type of silica used to make Pyrex has changed and that Pyrex is no longer, "Pyrex". Corning is just licencing the name and it is no doubt made by someone who knows about price, but little else. This particular dish had wide horizontal handles and came with a plastic lid.

Sump Pump - Battery Backup

Quote;" It is rare, that a house cant maintain 35 PSI with 8-10 GPM IMO." To your credit you did qualify that statement by stating it is your "Opinion", however you present no factual evidence to support that claim, and based upon the evidence presented in numerous posts it is evident that you are not a plumber, nor have you had any formal training in the plumbing field. Now here are a few facts to support my "professional opinion" as a Master Plumber, In order to maintain consistent water pressure municipal water suppliers first use electric pumps to pump the water up into water towers or in mountainous regions they use ground-mounted tanks installed at higher elevations. They then use gravity as the propelling force in the municipal water mains. A standing column of water produces 0.434psi per vertical foot thus the municipal water supplier erects water towers that are at least 94 from the bottom of the tank to the horizontal water line supplying the community, this will produce a minimum of 94x 0.434psi/ft = 40.79psi static head pressure from the base of the tank to the ground. The tanks on the top of tower are then 50 to 75 high, which produces another 21.7psi to 32.5psi so depending upon how full the tank may be at any given moment. The static head pressure may range from 40psi to 72.5psi approximately. Understanding that even comparatively flat terrain is not really flat, it then stands that the actual pressures at any given point in the municipal infrastructure might vary dependant upon whether the municipal main rises or drops from the mean average depth. With than in mind, the International Residential code requires that we install a boost pump if the static head pressure to a structure is less than 40psi. Under the Uniform Plumbing code a boost pump is not required unless the average static head pressure is below 15psi. Under both codes if the maximum static head pressure exceeds 85psi we are required to install a PRV (pressure reducing valve). Keep in mind that this code minimum is for static head pressure at the structure service main, which is the pressure when the water is at rest. The moment any valve or faucet is opened the water pressure to that fixture drops to "Dynamic Head Pressure", which is the initial static head pressure, less vertical static head loss and pipe friction loss and fitting loss. (pipe friction loss must be computed from the point of discharge back to the municipal main). In addition, pipe friction loss increases dramatically as the velocity of flow increases. Now when you consider that probably 60% of all residential structures in America today still have the code minimum ¾" supply line from the municipal main to the structure, and considering the losses it is almost a guarantee that they cannot maintain a 35psi dynamic head pressure into a ¾" fixture at any point in the structure. Especially when we consider that an overwhelming number of those residential service lines are 40 to 50 year old severely corroded galvanized pipe, not to mention that those structures that are under the UPC are only required a 15psi static head pressure to start with. So once again, in my professional opinion as a master plumber I doubt that 1 house in 100 could produce the necessary 35psi dynamic pressure required to operate the pump at peak operation Now let us consider the volume of water they water powered pumps consume. The overall mean average for residential water consumption is 300gal/day and the municipal water tanks must be able to provide sufficient water for a 24hour period, thus they determine how many residential structures may be supplied from the tank by dividing the total volume of the tank by 300gal. On the other hand, you yourself pointed out that the water-powered pumps can consume as much as 10gpm. Allowing 60minutes per hour, it is then consuming 10gpm x 60min/hr =600gal/hr. This means that a single water powered pump will consume a volume of water every hour equal to the daily requirements of 2 residential structures. If that pump were to run for 24 hours it would consume a volume of water equal to the amount needed to supply 48 houses in the same 24 hour period. Keep in mind that it is using water stored in the water tower, and while the power is out the municipality is unable to refill the tower. Needless to say, it would not take too many water-powered pumps to cause a serious problem with the water supply during a period of electrical power outage. It is true that most municipal water suppliers do have an emergency contingency, whether they have a backup generator, a diesel powered pump or as is done in some small rural communities, they use a fire truck to refill the tanks, however these systems are extremely small in comparison to the volume of water that can be pumped by the electric pumps that work off commercial power. In most communities these emergency systems are hard pressed to even maintain a minimal water supply when all the residents are conserving water during the emergency. It is for these reasons that many communities have outlawed water powered pumps. In my community they not only outlawed them, anyone who is caught using one will be fined $5,000.

i always keep frozen empty 2L pop bottles in my small chest freezer to move to a cooler that lasts 5 days. i also keep atleast 1 bag of ice in there too. we use a power inverter for outages less than 3 days, it's not worth the time & $$ to drag out the huge portable generator. if you do have a generator, everyone w/in 100 mi of a coastline should, use only 10 gauge extension cords to lessen the effect on large appliances which operate on a different oscillating wave pattern of electricity (constant back up generators use correct wave) and sustain damage over time on generators. always have a small window A/C on hand for generators, starting & stopping your house A/C while refilling the generator every 4 hours can take a toll on it. you can buy a battery operated air pump for freshwater fish tanks, wish i'd had one in 04' when i lost all the fish in a 75gal tank :-( salt tanks must be on generators. if you board up windows, we still have custom cut 5/8" plywood, you can piant the side facing in white w clouds and something cheerful LOL. we stayed boarded up for 20 days in 04 thou you should not do that for fire hazard reasons, we didn't have time to re-do it every 2 weeks. make sure EVERYTHING in your house had been cleaned ahead of time, once you are w/out power for more than a week & it's 120 inside you will appreciate it LOL! bathe pets ahead of time. stock up on paper plates, plastic cups & silverware who wants to do alot of dishes in 120 heat! we keep 2 tanks of propane for the grill at all times. trim trees ahead, cut grass 2 days ahead, loose clippings will be plastered on your house if you wait too late. most importantly cook & bake a bunch of food ahead...no one wants to waste time cooking in the immediate few days afterwards. it is nice to have food ready too after doing alot of repair & clean up work! + you will need it to bribe linesmen coming thru your neighborhood! it's true LOL! ~ liz

Serious eye infections in dogs w/flat faces, bulging eyes
Q
Comments (5)
Some breeds are more prone to eye diseases. Bad breeding is another cause. My dog was originally dumped in a Wal-Mart parking lot as a puppy. Most likely due to her mild hip dysplasia - breeder could not sell. Then at 5yo, she was dumped again, but at a local pet food store. I adopted her knowing she had issues, including corneal lipidosis. She developed glaucoma, then a corneal ulcer which caused a tiny divot. Hers did not get infected, but if it did, it could have ruptured. The vet sent me to the veterinary ophthalmologist, who said of the four treatments, only two were suited to our dog. Of the two, we both agreed removing the eye was the best course of action, so it could be tested and we know how to treat her remaining eye and hopefully avoid serious issues/postpone glaucoma. She said it's not if, but when. Eye pressure should be under 20, and her right eye was 63. The Dr used to treat humans, and is still a professor, and said it's like a bad headache. I felt like a horrible mama not knowing. She was already blind, so removing the eye got rid of the pressure/pain. I opted not to have a silicone ball inserted due to risk of infection and/or rejection. It's purely aesthetic. I can always let her hair grow longer over that side. She will go every 3-4 months to the ophthalmologist for the remainder of her life. She turns 9yo in October, so I wish I could say I am optimistic she will keep the vision in her left eye, but I am doubtful. My advice would be to always have annual check-ups for your pets. Catch the problem as early as possible, and if they start messing with an eye, go to the vet asap. I am going to take photos of her left eye weekly, so I can compare and see any changes. It's hard to notice a gradual change when you see them every day.

Glad that he is okay. My DS had that happen when he was in high school, was working on an old fire truck to be in a parade the school was having. The battery exploded in his face and there was a bucket of water nearby and he had the good sense to go and duck his head in the water and then was washed off and went to ER. He didn't suffer any burns, why not I do not know, guess he got the acid off quick enough.

Sounds like that ER needs to have some in-service training on some things for their employees. Sheeeesh what did they think was in the battery......orange juice?

Linda, They usually do a follow up call to see how the service was that you got. Knowing this guy I bet $100 he will say fine and leave it go. But I know what your saying, DD was furious. They actually had to run around and FIND someone to get them into the ER. Found a gal in Radiology and told her what happened and she ran and found someone.
Good gosh it makes me NOT want to be treated here! Our clinic is good but I am rethinking on the hospital now.

Connie...that battery acid is very strong...I would complain too. Things could have been much worst.

That happened to Denny before we were married, but not in his face. He had heavy coveralls on and the acid burned clear through them....the whole front of the coveralls were ate up before he got his pants off......

Lol...I won't say what got burned....but I can tell you I was worried..."S"

But in all seriousness..Have him get his eyes checked ....and encourage him to complain.

So glad he's okay, so far. He really should have his eyes checked...and he really, really should complain and encourage the hospital to train their ER and other personnel about acid burns and how quickly they need to be treated. He should complain in order to help the next acid burn victim. His complaint is valid.

Wow, glad he is okay!

I remember when I was about five I was with my mom and uncle Bob. Uncle Bob drove my mom to the store to pick up milk. While mom was in the store, uncle Bob decided to check something under the car hood when all of a sudden the battery blew up in his face. Mom had just walked out of the store when this happened. She ran over to my uncle, opened her carton of milk and immediately poured it on his face saving him from serious burns.

The image of all that happened is still very clear in my mind 50 years later and oh yeah, uncle Bob is still doing great!

Connie, I have no confidence he was thoroughly treated. Please try to convince him to go see another doctor or emergency room. He can still go blind or end up with bad burns that won't heal or may become infected. I'm not sure the hospital ER is to blame. They may not be a crisis center and doesn't sound like they are, but there are hospitals that have burn centers with personnel who know what to do.

I'm glad to hear he's okay. I hope he will report that hospital. The way he was treated is just wrong.

I saw this thread when you first posted it. I didn't reply to it then because I know someone that happened to; I just couldn't remember who it was. Well, here it is hours later and I've been racking my brain trying to remember who it was and my mind still draws a blank.

He had a 'script for either a cream or ointment, for the burns. His eyes didn't actually get any battery acid in them that I know of. He said he shut his eyes and kept them closed til he got to the sink.

I will tell DD and him, but really you guys have never seen stubborn like this! LOL He cut himself cutting up a deer this fall, DD said he needed stitches, oh no I will just do the old paper towel and black electrical tape! I am surprised the boss got him to go to the ER. DSIL2B says it was a wasted trip cause he knew more than they did in the ER.

DD is just so very glad he is ok!!

I would think any ER would at least have some kind of manual to refer to for such as this. After all it was an EMERGENCY, right? He really should have gone straight to a doctor from the ER, but its not too late even now.

If he is that stubborn (read trying to be macho, a big boy) I would seriously encourage your DD to be sure and have good medical insurance and Life Insurance on him. Not to would be folly.

Wishing him the best.

I work for a construction company, and our crews 'out in the field' are all taught to run for the nearest eye wash or shower unit or get the coworker to one to wash off acid & other chemicals immediately. The ER staff was negligent, IMO, and the ER supervisor as well as the hospital administrator need to receive a letter. Like the others, I'm thankful he seems to be OK....I sincerely hope he will follow up with (1) his eye dr (2) his primary care physican to be sure he IS healing properly. Eye sight is too precious to risk.

The best way to neutralize battery acid is a mix of water and baking soda. My father (an aircraft mechanic) taught me this as we would repair our own cars. I cannot tell you how many times I would use this mix on my hands after removing or handling the car battery. We would also use baking soda to clean the terminals before reconnecting the battery cables.

When you apply the baking soda it may fizz when it comes in contact with the acid. I am not so sure that I would put baking soda in my eyes (it is an abrasive), but then again, depending upon the circumstance.....
