DD was at work and he called her over noon hour to tell her what happened. Then she was about frantic! He told her he was ok but she couldn't wait to get home! He went right back to work and hauled a load of cattle 60 miles away.
I figured he would! He drives DD nuts cause he is so stubborn! LOL

I think he should get to an eye doctor anyway. I really think he should!

Glad that he is okay. My DS had that happen when he was in high school, was working on an old fire truck to be in a parade the school was having. The battery exploded in his face and there was a bucket of water nearby and he had the good sense to go and duck his head in the water and then was washed off and went to ER. He didn't suffer any burns, why not I do not know, guess he got the acid off quick enough.

Sounds like that ER needs to have some in-service training on some things for their employees. Sheeeesh what did they think was in the battery......orange juice?

I'm glad he's ok. I think he needs to file a complaint with the hospital administration ASAP. How could they not know how to treat an acid burn?

Linda, They usually do a follow up call to see how the service was that you got. Knowing this guy I bet $100 he will say fine and leave it go. But I know what your saying, DD was furious. They actually had to run around and FIND someone to get them into the ER. Found a gal in Radiology and told her what happened and she ran and found someone.
Good gosh it makes me NOT want to be treated here! Our clinic is good but I am rethinking on the hospital now.

Connie...that battery acid is very strong...I would complain too. Things could have been much worst.

That happened to Denny before we were married, but not in his face. He had heavy coveralls on and the acid burned clear through them....the whole front of the coveralls were ate up before he got his pants off......

Lol...I won't say what got burned....but I can tell you I was worried..."S"

But in all seriousness..Have him get his eyes checked ....and encourage him to complain.

So glad he's okay, so far. He really should have his eyes checked...and he really, really should complain and encourage the hospital to train their ER and other personnel about acid burns and how quickly they need to be treated. He should complain in order to help the next acid burn victim. His complaint is valid.

Wow, glad he is okay!

I remember when I was about five I was with my mom and uncle Bob. Uncle Bob drove my mom to the store to pick up milk. While mom was in the store, uncle Bob decided to check something under the car hood when all of a sudden the battery blew up in his face. Mom had just walked out of the store when this happened. She ran over to my uncle, opened her carton of milk and immediately poured it on his face saving him from serious burns.

The image of all that happened is still very clear in my mind 50 years later and oh yeah, uncle Bob is still doing great!

I am another one who thinks he should get checked out by an eye doctor and also complain to the head of the ER and also to the hospital administrator so that the next guy with battery acid on his face gets better treatment.

Connie, I have no confidence he was thoroughly treated. Please try to convince him to go see another doctor or emergency room. He can still go blind or end up with bad burns that won't heal or may become infected. I'm not sure the hospital ER is to blame. They may not be a crisis center and doesn't sound like they are, but there are hospitals that have burn centers with personnel who know what to do.

goes to see his family doctor for a follow up. Stub born MEN!!!!!
He is very lucky and needs to be very thankful. Keep us posted with his progress.

I saw this thread when you first posted it. I didn't reply to it then because I know someone that happened to; I just couldn't remember who it was. Well, here it is hours later and I've been racking my brain trying to remember who it was and my mind still draws a blank.

Did they give any medication, antibiotics?

He had a 'script for either a cream or ointment, for the burns. His eyes didn't actually get any battery acid in them that I know of. He said he shut his eyes and kept them closed til he got to the sink.

I will tell DD and him, but really you guys have never seen stubborn like this! LOL He cut himself cutting up a deer this fall, DD said he needed stitches, oh no I will just do the old paper towel and black electrical tape! I am surprised the boss got him to go to the ER. DSIL2B says it was a wasted trip cause he knew more than they did in the ER.

DD is just so very glad he is ok!!

I would think any ER would at least have some kind of manual to refer to for such as this. After all it was an EMERGENCY, right? He really should have gone straight to a doctor from the ER, but its not too late even now.

If he is that stubborn (read trying to be macho, a big boy) I would seriously encourage your DD to be sure and have good medical insurance and Life Insurance on him. Not to would be folly.

Man, Connie, that sounds serious!! I'm glad to hear that he'll be ok, but an exploding battery in your face doesn't sound pleasant at all.

Thanks for all the good thoughts! I got home last night and he is ok. He has some red blotches on his face and neck but other than that the burns don't seem to be bad. They have already kinda crusted over. He is lucky thats all I have to say

I'm glad he's okay! I've always heard warnings that a battery could explode, but never heard of it actually happening. I will be more cautious now!

Good to hear he will be okay, but how scary!

I work for a construction company, and our crews 'out in the field' are all taught to run for the nearest eye wash or shower unit or get the coworker to one to wash off acid & other chemicals immediately. The ER staff was negligent, IMO, and the ER supervisor as well as the hospital administrator need to receive a letter. Like the others, I'm thankful he seems to be OK....I sincerely hope he will follow up with (1) his eye dr (2) his primary care physican to be sure he IS healing properly. Eye sight is too precious to risk.

The best way to neutralize battery acid is a mix of water and baking soda. My father (an aircraft mechanic) taught me this as we would repair our own cars. I cannot tell you how many times I would use this mix on my hands after removing or handling the car battery. We would also use baking soda to clean the terminals before reconnecting the battery cables.

When you apply the baking soda it may fizz when it comes in contact with the acid. I am not so sure that I would put baking soda in my eyes (it is an abrasive), but then again, depending upon the circumstance.....

So thankful his injuries were minor, as you've said, they easily could have been much worse.
