Last time I had Sea Bass was in 1969, with my helper.

We were fishing on the Rock Piles at AC, NJ. and
caught 2, nice sized.

I had them scaled, cleaned and in the oven, covered with Tomatoes and Onions, in about 20 minutes.

Best Sea Bass I ever had.

It was great working down at the Shore, catching all kinds of fish at night.
The price of Fish has really skyrocketed.

Yes, he recommended Mediterranean sea bass. I didn't realize there were that many different kinds of sea bass. I don't see it on the Seafood Watch list, though, under that name. Hmmm. Wonder what name it goes by. And the frozen pack that I saw in the supermarket didn't specify what kind it was.

Mediterranean. Is that because it eats olive oil? Get it? Where olive trees grow? Olive is good for you? HA! I kill myself. I can't imagine it'd be any fattier (the good kind) than any other seabass or have more antioxidants (kills free radicals)? But maybe.

Also called: European seabass, Dicentrarchus labrax. Further, "The fish has come under increasing pressure from commercial fishing and has recently become the focus in the United Kingdom of a conservation effort by recreational anglers." So it's sounding like another one to avoid overfishing. And why it was $26 a pound.

Robin - At least it's not got a health warning for high levels of PCBs like domestic striper. Which, by the way, Monterey Bay Aquarium lists as a "best choice." Hey, whose interest are they looking out for anyway? Fish before humans?!

I looked at label on the frozen sea bass in the supermarket and noticed it did say Chilean sea bass. Looks like I won't be buying that any time soon. BaDaBoom!

In our area, farm raised bronzini from Greece ranges from about $9.95 - $13/lb. but they're always sold as a whole fish. Wegmans grocery store had bronzini for $10.59/lb. this weekend. They're also a menu staple in most Greek restaurants and I've seen them in our Italian market only around Christmastime.

Chilean sea bass filets cost $25 - $26/lb.

Occasionally, we also have the small black bass or larger striped bass (aka rockfish) for $6 - $9/lb. for the whole fish in the seafood stalls at the farmers' markets or fish stores but I haven't seen them in the seafood departments of local grocery stores. They're usually from NJ or MD.
