Sea Bass?

On yesterday's Dr Oz show, a colleague listed three of the foods that help prevent ovarian cancer. He is an oncologist, and has done extensive research on the subject. The foods are onions, Belgian endives and sea bass.

I priced sea bass today at the supermarket and they only carried it frozen and the price was - wait for it - $26/lb.!!!

I guess I'll pass on that food unless somebody has it on sale, which I very much doubt.

If you are a true Heron you should be able to catch your own. LOL !!!

Last time I had Sea Bass was in 1969, with my helper.

We were fishing on the Rock Piles at AC, NJ. and
caught 2, nice sized.

I had them scaled, cleaned and in the oven, covered with Tomatoes and Onions, in about 20 minutes.

Best Sea Bass I ever had.

It was great working down at the Shore, catching all kinds of fish at night.
The price of Fish has really skyrocketed.

The Patagonian toothfish (renamed Chilean sea bass for marketing in the U.S) has been overfished in many areas. Wikipedia: According to Seafood Watch, the Chilean sea bass is currently on the list of fish American consumers who are sustainability-minded should avoid. I suggest if it's that expensive it may have been purchased on the black market, and I would definitely avoid it. Besides, I'm a cheapskate!

It seems alot of food but it's actually not. Each course is served in a large plate and placed it in the center of the table. Each plate is normally served for 10 people (1 table seats for 10). Basically, each person will take 1 large spoon portion of the dish course. Therefore, the course portion here is 1 large spoon size, not a whole plate size like here in the US. It's similar with the way you would serve yourself at potluck parties. With so many food to chose and taste, you'd take a spoon or two of each dish. And before you know it, your plate is full of all sort of goodies. One thing I don't like about these typical Asian banquets is that they normally bring the rice toward the end of the course list. Not necessarily there's anything wrong with it, I guess it's just all depends with how we're used to eat our meals. In our normal every day meal, rice is the main accompanied dish that is served with all the other dishes. It's sort of like how bread is served here in the US, with other food. At these banquets, they do it backwards and you'd ending up eating the rice by itself toward the end of the meal. It's just really a strange way to eat fried rice for us. I feel the same way with the US restaurants when they bring out just the bread to snack on while we're waiting for our plates to arrive. I normally just take my portion of the bread and leave on the side until my plate (main course) arrives and eat altogether. With my family, when we make reservation for a banquet, we always make a special request to serve fried rice within the first courses after the appetizers. Our guests like it this way too.

Thanks Ann, he did out do himself! It was incredible. Cathy, if you (or any other CFers) come here and visit, I'll be more than happy to make a reservation at the Chef's Table. It's an experience!! eandhl, oh yeah, we were beyond stuffed! Linda, oh you gotta know there was wine. And plenty of it. Can't do a dinner like that without IMO. cotehele, talented they are. That restaurant is wonderful and we've formed a relationship with the chef and waiter so it is like visiting friends! Nancy, you're right, the presentation adds so much. And believe me, my pix are nothing compared to the "real" thing!

Morpheus Restaurant in Santa Elena, where I took Kevin for his birthday lunch after zip lining. He had some sort of shrimp special of the day, and I had chicken breast Milanese (a popular style in CR) with hearts of palm and fresh mushrooms. The meal came with a side dish of vegetables - mostly zucchini and some kind of squash - cut into about half inch cubes and them probably steamed lightly and then sauteed in butter. They were amazingly good - probably because they were so fresh, but also because no salt or pepper was used, and therefore the sweet natural flavor of the vegetables could be appreciated. I was so happy to find a country where salt is not king and where people appreciate the unadulterated flavors of locally grown vegetables and food. I also had a side dish of sauteed potatoes, and they were delicately seasoned and perfectly cooked. They were small potatoes (perhaps Yukon Gold or something similar) and had been cut into small wedges. There were quite a few Peruvian restaurants, and this might explain why we got potatoes instead of rice and beans. I had great potatoes at several restaurants. There was no salt and no pepper on the table, but none was needed. Hot sauce was also a rarity in CR. Back to the horse trail - here is a photo of the historic spot where I was thrown from the horse: You can see the tracks of the horses who left me behind! You can also get an idea of how soft the ground was, I think. I was very aware from the beginning that my horse had a mind of her own, and perhaps I did not pet her enough. The Italians petted their horses profusely as soon as they mounted them, and perhaps this is what I should have done as well. I was kind to her, however, and kept my legs spread apart as much as possible, to aid in stability and also to avoid kicking her. Lars

Yes, he recommended Mediterranean sea bass. I didn't realize there were that many different kinds of sea bass. I don't see it on the Seafood Watch list, though, under that name. Hmmm. Wonder what name it goes by. And the frozen pack that I saw in the supermarket didn't specify what kind it was.

Lou, you are correct - I should be catching my own fish...lol

Mediterranean. Is that because it eats olive oil? Get it? Where olive trees grow? Olive is good for you? HA! I kill myself. I can't imagine it'd be any fattier (the good kind) than any other seabass or have more antioxidants (kills free radicals)? But maybe.

Also called: European seabass, Dicentrarchus labrax. Further, "The fish has come under increasing pressure from commercial fishing and has recently become the focus in the United Kingdom of a conservation effort by recreational anglers." So it's sounding like another one to avoid overfishing. And why it was $26 a pound.

Robin - At least it's not got a health warning for high levels of PCBs like domestic striper. Which, by the way, Monterey Bay Aquarium lists as a "best choice." Hey, whose interest are they looking out for anyway? Fish before humans?!

I looked at label on the frozen sea bass in the supermarket and noticed it did say Chilean sea bass. Looks like I won't be buying that any time soon. BaDaBoom!

In our area, farm raised bronzini from Greece ranges from about $9.95 - $13/lb. but they're always sold as a whole fish. Wegmans grocery store had bronzini for $10.59/lb. this weekend. They're also a menu staple in most Greek restaurants and I've seen them in our Italian market only around Christmastime.

Chilean sea bass filets cost $25 - $26/lb.

Occasionally, we also have the small black bass or larger striped bass (aka rockfish) for $6 - $9/lb. for the whole fish in the seafood stalls at the farmers' markets or fish stores but I haven't seen them in the seafood departments of local grocery stores. They're usually from NJ or MD.
