TGIF 9-4-09 Happy Labor Day Weekend!

Woo Hoo! Three day weekend...what's everyone up to this weekend. It was the last big bash up at the lake when I lived up there.

I'm looking forward to the kick off of high school and college football. Tonight is one of the big rival high school games in Tulsa. I'll be watching it on TV flippin' back and forth between that and the Vikings/Cowboys preseason game.

Tomorrow night it's Sooner football all the way. I'm hosting a small group for the season opener. We are playing in Jerry's fancy new stadium down in Arlington, TX. Lots of munchies and I'm breaking out the deep fryer too. LOL

Sunday is a pool party. Smoking ribs or pork butt on the smoker...guest are bringing the sides. If I/we survive all of that we plan to go up to the lake on Monday. We will see how we all feel that morning and make the call.

I'm picking up tomatoes in the morning so I'll fit some canning in too.

Clinking with a cold one and heading out for dip in the pool and to toss a steak on the grill before the games start. I hope everyone has a great weekend with family and friends!!

Hey David, Happy Labor Day Weekend to you! It sounds like you have some fun and good times planned. My weekend includes a few garden projects like moving some grasses and hostas, some window washing and like you, maybe smoking some ribs on the grill. Tomorrow we're hunting a nice big basin rock for the middle of our pond, to run a bubbler pump through.

Hey Big Guy! Happy Labour Day from Canada! This one of the only Holiday weekends Canada and the US share!

Now that we are old retired folks we don't "get" weekends from non weekends so funnily enough we came down from the cottage today and are going back up Tuesday after those pesky cottagers are all gone!

Actually we have been at the lake damn near all summer (poor us !) and needed to get some business done here in the city.

So here we are in the city, all alone 'cause everyone we know has gone up north. We really do need to get our act together! LOL

Hi Everybody! I can't believe how this week has flown by. Tomorrow is weigh-in day again! Other than more demolition on the kitchen, I haven't been getting my exercise. Actually, I should be doing my step aerobics right now, but here I am instead. The days are getting noticeably shorter, but the temperatures here are still warm. I guess we will be getting remnants of Ivan in the form of rain, rain, rain for the weekend. But I can't complain. My heart goes out to those affected more directly by the recent string of hurricanes. Well, I wore a pair of jeans today that I had not worn for a looong time. They fit, and were not tight. I know that the changes in my diet are really working. Yellowhair--I wonder if we will see Bunny Tracks here. I really love the Skinny Cow fudge bars. My DH is now eating them, too. You know, I have never had problems with my feet. But awhile back when I was trying to take long walks, I started having a problem with my big toe. It felt like it was sprained or something. It was very odd, but it just went away. DH has lots of trouble with his feet. I am sure it is just that we are getting older. Anyway, he has heel spurs, which are bony growths that kinda jab you from the inside. he has other things going on too, and has even been through physical therapy. He says they told him that whenever he is getting pain to quit whatever activity he is doing for awhile. In other words, if it hurts when you do that, don't do that! Kathy--When I first got into gardening and landscaping someone, who was a seasoned gardener, told me that a garden wasn't really yours until you had re-invented it about a million times. Well, they didn't say it quite like that, but that was the general meaning I took from it. I was fretting because the year before I had planted a shrub that I now thought would be in much better spot if I moved it just 4 feet. I wasn't sure it was worth it to go to the trouble. The advice I got was to go for it. I did, and I am still glad I did. And that is still my approach to gardening now. I am always seeing something that needs to be improved and gardening is all about the process. So it sounds like a change will be coming to your garden soon! DeeMarie--Talking about your commute reminded me of when I was doing that. Several years ago, I drove 50 miles one way to work. It took an hour and a half on most days with traffic and all. DH says I used to come home in the worst mood. It is interesting how we get ourselves into these things. I mean the trade-off for a job that you love vs. having more time for activities at home vs a nice paycheck vs whatever. I try not to regret the decisions that I make, but it sure seems that life is all about the trade-offs sometimes. On that note, I will wrap up this longwinded post. Eat healthy!!

sharon, you definitely got a keeper with that one! Chase, have a great week and relax about that trip. Everything will happen anyway, it'll be fine. Nancy, have some fun, don't just clean. Diane, 18 grand kids? Wow, I have my hands full with two of them, LOL. I'll be keeping that Marine of yours in my prayers, that he comes back safe and sound and that DIL's pregnancy goes well and uneventfully. Here? I'm fixing fence. Again. Elery and I fixed fence on Saturday, again on Monday. Horses need to be groomed, post holes need to be dug, manure....um....fertilizer needs to be spread on the garden and tilled in. Pens need to be cleaned and my yard needs raking and, well, it's spring. 65 and sunny tomorrow, so I'll work outside all day. 50 and rain on Sunday, so I'll bake a coffee cake and start some cinnamon rolls, Administrative Professional's Day is Wednesday, I'm taking breakfast for my office staff on Tuesday morning because Wednesday Elery and I are going to visit his Dad and stepmom in Ohio. She's back in the hospital, she's never really recovered from that heart surgery last year. I feel horrible for his Dad, Elery's Mom died three years ago, his Dad married Francis and now she's so ill. Sigh. Anyway, TGIF, I have lots to do this weekend and only two weeks until we meet Chase in Grand Rapids for supper! Hooray!! Annie

Clinking with a Pabst Blue Ribbon. Friday was a total loss other then I took some garbage out to the road. First time I remembered in about a month... ewww stinky kitty litter. Chrysler bankrupting caused things to be ugly at work. Only a dozen people laid-off at our factory but our sister plants are in deep trouble... almost shut down. So far we turned a profit 4 out of 4 months this year! My audit team caught up three overdue audits and finished half of the audits due this month. Our managers forgot to allot hours for auditing so I put in about 20 volunteer hours this week. I asked them to pay me something for the time so next week's check should be interesting. Sort of like being on my own time as I work at my own pace in my own way and nobody can say diddly about how I'm doing things... and things are getting done. I was not feeling well this morning. Fell back asleep drinking my coffee then went back to bed until I had to go to work. Feeling much better tonight. A big chunk of smoked brisket to do something with. Dolly and I have been eating on it all week and it needs to become something else before it goes bad. Very probably going to make chili with it. Glad to see April done... trees, taxes, audits, and a boatload of overtime. Biggest tree order has yet to be paid for but I have the guys skidsteer as collateral. Tempted to gas it up and move some dirt this weekend... as an "interest" payment.... $50k toy! Ten tomato plants up and going indoors. Planted six Early Girls this week but no sprouts yet. Cayenne pepper in the window has new peppers on it already! Need to get off my lazy butt and do some mushroom hunting. Scratches and pats for all the puppy dogs! : ) lyra

OK, took the grands to my parent's Sat and came back Sunday night. Gonna have a picnic at my house today. Didn't get to go through my grand mother's quilts, but we did go to my great grandmother's old house and I found 4 abandoned, sad, BADLY worn and soiled quilts. Just couldn't leave them there, so I brought them home. There was probably a pound of dust and dirt in one of them. It is still hanging on the rail of the deck waiting for another beating. There is no way 3 of them can be repaired, but I will be able to use them as cutter quilts. The last one may be salvageable, we will see. We didn't make it up to the attic. Mom said there may be some more there and she will check later. I also brought home the quilt I remember using as a child. My mother made it (she thinks she was 16) using chicken feed sacks for the back. It went on picnics, car trips, and sleep overs, and is so very worn. I love every ragged thread in it. I'm taking it to Camp Cheerio so it will be included in the quilt show. But then it has to go back to mom's. I did make some progress on my Redwork while I was there. I guess it was a great quilt weekend. beverly

Happy Labor Day back at you, David. Sounds like you are going to have a super extended weekend.

This weekend we have nothing special planned. Just the normal. However, we are taking our 5th wheel to an RV park on Weds. where we'll host a family get-together on Saturday and Sunday. Since we are now the oldest surviving members of either of our families (and I don't think we're really that old), if we don't do it, no one else will. They will be having a special Heartnut Festival at the park where we will be set up so there will be a lot of entertainment for all of us. Mountain man and NA settlements, craft and food booths, RC airplane fly-in, RC car races, a big horse show at the Hoosier Horse Park which was build for the Pan Am games, lots of music, tractor pull and a scale railroad that takes people for rides. And lots of free food at our spot. That will be our big weekend.

Happy Labor Day, David. I have 1200 dog biscuits to make tomorrow for a charity dog walk on Monday. Sunday the family will all be here for a birthday party for my nephew's wife. Monday is the big dog walk for our local animal shelters. Sometime this weekend I need to can another bushel of tomatoes also.

TGIF, all! I hope everyone has good bbq weather.

I have a two day weekend, but 48 hours without getting into my car is a rare treat. Tonight we have several dozen ears of corn to freeze. Tomorrow is book sale day...short day but it's dollar a bag day, so we will be crazy. After work we may go to Pigout in the Park, a Labor Day tradition in Spokane...all the best food in one place. A band that we like is playing and we may go even though we know we'll feel older than dirt, lol. Sunday and Monday we'll be home. I'll have a few things to harvest and we have a woodshed to fill. Fall is coming....aaack!

Happy Labor Day Weekend, everyone.

David, I'll be canning some tomatoes too, I have a crockpot full ground up with onions, brown sugar, vinegar, cinnamon, cloves, allspice. It'll cook all day tomorrow until it's "Tomato Butter", the Farm Journal recipe.

We're having a yard sale, I just sold nearly 300 Beanie Babies, LOL, party to a local teacher who is going to use them as "reading rewards" and other prizes for good grades and part to David's mother, who works at a local hospital and gives them to kids in the Emergency Room. All the girls' Prom Dresses went to, I gotta get stuff out of the basement!

Makayla has already made $15 selling chocolate chip cookies and peanut butter cookies, and tomorrow is the last sale day.

Sunday is the farm and the garden, I need to pick and can more tomatoes if I have any.

That should pretty much fill up my weekend!

Claire, I need to do some garden work too but I'm putting off for later this fall. We will be smokin' together.

Sharon, I was thinking you and himself have been stuck up at the cottage for most of the summer. Nothing wrong with that at all. As much as I loved all the summer crowd up at the lake I loved to see them go after Labor Day...I noticed that too on the calendar even though y'all spell it wrong...lololol! You know I'm JK pal.

bcskye, sounds like you and your group have a lot of fun planned for next week. I went camping and on a float trip last weekend. I see you are in Hoosier country.

Linda, WOW! That is a undertaking making all those dog treats....for a good cause for sure though. I'm picking up a bushel tomorrow too....happy canning.

Annie, 300 beanies? I thought those things were collectors items and worth some bucks. High Five to Makayla and here cookie sales. I knew you would be canning this weekend and now I've got my eye on those dilly beans and the plum sauce mentioned on another thread.

My weekend has morphed into a major event in the last couple of hours. Y'al know me and my group...last minute with everything. My Vikings are up by ten and Union is up by four...hope this is good sign for my Sooners tomorrow.

I am just beginning an 11 day weekend. I have all of next week off plus the following Monday.

My niece is coming in from Manhattan. She, my son and I are all taking my mom out for dinner to celebrate her 92nd birthday. She is in great shape and enjoys life although she has a knack for occasionally making it difficult for the rest of us. Mostly it's good.

I have done a ton of laundry already. I also went shopping for new tile for my bathroom reno. So many choices, so little money.

I may hit the Bryn Mawr Farmers Market. I am also headed out to buy big baskets of mums for my mother. Mums for Mum.

Yesterday I yanked out my tomato plants. This has been an awful year for tomatoes. Too much rain.

Monday I will pack for my trip to Cape Cod. Thank goodness my son stays at my house so that is one headache I don't have to deal with -- stopping mail, newspaper, finding someone to water the plants, etc.

I am just so happy NOT to be going to work! So far the weather is heavenly although rain is predicted for the Cap next week. Guess I'll just have to take naps every day.

Tomatoes? People have tomatoes? I've got a ton of green ones and not a single ripe tomato to be found. Hoping for a couple more weeks of warm weather... dunno... been below 50 a couple nights already.

So far I've done almost nothing. Made soup, did some laundry, and went out to McDonald's for dinner. First time in years I've had a McD burger that was actually pretty good. I was late getting into town and the meat had all been put away at the market so no steaks this weekend. I bought beans, lentils, cabbage, and onions to make soups with... a pot of ham/cabbage/onion/kidney bean/cayenne pepper a going on the stove. Opened a new can a coffee and wondered how Renee is doing. Went shopping at Penzey's online. Got some hearts and tounges a local farmer didn't want so I'll pickle them when the spices get here. Poked around Amazon for a couple hours looking for stuff to buy... need an led bulb for my garage door opener but don't want to pay shipping on just one light bulb.

Need to wash my truck and mow the lawn so I'm looking for excuses to do something else. Backed the truck in last night so I can change the thermostat today. Probably need to get at that so I can drive it to the bar tonight.

Whoo Hoo!... good to have a job but not be working this weekend. A little bit better these days... running six days a week, some 12 hour days, and orders just shot up pretty good. I've got one person working under me again and reasonable hope for two more before... ahhh... December... almost said the "C" word for that holiday in December.

Claire, happy gardening! I have daylilies and hostas to move too, but I am waiting until it cools off here a little first. We are finally getting warm summery weather this weekend LOL!

Sharon, I am so jealous of your being able to spend the fall at the cottage after the summer people are gonw. That was always my favorite time of year in Ogunquit - saying goodbye to the tourists! Enjoy your time and Clive

bcskye, sounds like a blast! What sort of horse show is it? I used to ride hunters (and a few jumpers) back in the day, but I love all sorts of equestrian competitions. Have a great time with the family too.

Linda, OGM! 1200?!?!?!? There are going to be some happy pooches and you are a dear for the labor of love.

Katie - sounds like a wonderful way to spend the weekend. As David says - dance like no one is watching!

Annie, glad to hear those beanies are going to good use. And happy canning! I can't wait to start my next project, I just have to find a little time.

Dedtired - enjoy the Cape - as I mentioned before, fall is the BEST time to go anyplace touristy - the crowds have thinned.

Lyra - Good luck with the projuect. I know how that goes, seems I can always find something else to do rather than what really needs to be done. Somehow it all does get dome though - an enjoy your time off, you deserve it!

I had my second jewelry class on Friday - I just love it. Working on a multi metal (copper and brass) pendant to learn my skills. I will post photos as I complete projects. Fri night was out with friends for Happy Hour, yesterday was relaxing at home and getting totally caught up on Mad Men. I am TOTALLY addicted to that show now!

Today we are having another couple over for a BBQ - sometimes it is nice not to have a gang and just sit and enjoy a quiet evening with grown up conversation. Tomorrow we are thinking about going to the NJ shore (I am cringing at the thought, I don't care for the shore) so we'll see. Maybe I will send the men folk off and have a canning day to myself.

Sounds like everybody is keeping busy and having fun. We are not doing much here since little man and DH are both sick.

Today is Sunday and we have been busy making bread. DH was definitely in his bread mood. With my help, he made two loaves of Russian black bread. I made two loaves of sourdough yogurt sesame sandwich bread and one loaf of free form sourdough roasted garlic bread. Then I made green tea ice cream for tonight's dessert. The two boys are having sore throat so hope the ice cream will help.

I have been cooking and cleaning since this morning, now I don't want to make dinner! LOL

I'm thoroughly enjoying the three day week-end, but not in the usual way. Yesterday I finished unpacking the rest of my books and put them away in my bookcases, making my bedroom a lot more clutter free, and today we cleared out the remaining unpacked boxes in the garage, making it clutter free as well, after which we went shopping for zippers for pillows for our living room sofa (and fabric for new curtains for the living room as well). Oh, and yesterday we tried to go to the African Marketplace Faire at Rancho Cienega Park, which has been held for the past 15 years or so, but this year it had been canceled!! So we decided to go to Leimert Park instead to shop for African furniture. I had thought that I would be able to find a great African chair at AMF like I had found years before, but we were lucky enough to find a reclining lounge chair with ottoman and side table at an import shop at Leimert Park. This is why I wanted to buy African fabric for the curtains. I also bought zippers to make new pillows for our sofa and for cushions for the new lounge chair. I personally do not intend to sit in the new chair, but I do intend to make our BIL sit there, since he is narcoleptic and does not deserve to sit on the sofa directly in front of the TV when we are trying to watch a movie. I think the new chair will be a better place for him to sleep during movies.
