What is on your bathroom floors? ... tile wise that is.

Could you please share photos of your bathroom floors?

I am trying out pattens for the half bath floor in our 1906 Arts & Crafts home. The closet turned powder room is tiny and I don't think a border would work, so I am particularly interested in overall patterns. I found a source for historical 3/4 inch square and 1 inch hex tiles (restorationtile.com) in colors that go with our art glass windows nearby. Now, I just need to work out a pattern. I would love to see examples from your homes.

The bathroom floor in my 1922 Colonial Revival is simply white hex tile, no pattern at all.

We put handmade off white 4" tiles,pretty but I wanted hardwood floor with stencil painted./Hubby didnt want that.The tile does get slippery,we have radiant heat in floor thats great..

Well I will go first. We did 7 bathrooms. One of those has 2 of everything ( 6 boys share). 5 of those baths had full tile surrounds, pebble shower floors, hex bath floors. Each shower had its own unique deco band to give each its own appropriate look. The 2 other baths are powder rooms and have no tile. All inclusive grout, tile, deco bands, etc. it was the bargain price of 11,000.00. I forgot that the price also included the extensive subway back splashes in the kitchen. Now it may seem like a lot, but for what we did it is a good price in my opinion and many others. I could have easily spent 3 times this amount but did do some stock tile like the Daltile subway, at less than 3.00 per sq. ft. it was really a bargain. Here are some pics. I also included kitchen back splashes just so you could get the scope of how much tile we bought. I must say I have 10 cases of subway left over so that makes it even less costly as I will probably sell it.

All gorgeous and very generous of you all to share to help the uncreative types here (like moi) learn what is possible. Lindy I love your current bathroom - the floor and particularly the way the shower and bath are- I have a similar layout and envisioned what you did but had not quite seen it. Lindy- how do you like living with the floor you have now? It is really attractive.I am going to see if I can find it or something like it.

I poo-pooed the idea of wood tile, too, until I saw some in a model home. It was right next to real wood, so there was no fooling anyone. But in an application that clearly required tile (a foyer in that case), it looked really good. And real wood doesn't always come in random lengths. I was considering having it laid in herringbone like is done with real wood in Europe, but is really expensive to have done with real wood. But the irregular shape of my bathroom made me decide to just have it placed in random strips. Mine is only 2' long, but you can get some up to 4 feet long. And as long as it's not placed in an even pattern, it's not obvious that it's all the same length.

As a real estate appraiser I would advise to try to keep it. It will reduce the valuation by a few percent. If I were to appraise your home, I would now have to compare and adjust it from a 3 bathroom home to a 2.5. That's anywhere from $2,500 to $5,000 adjustment downwards. Understand that I don't know where you live or your real estate market. Even though there is no bedroom on the floor, it's a very usable space. At the very least, I'd put in a shower. You just never know when someone will lose their mobility. It looks like an older home. If your laundry room is in the basement, you may want to reconfigure it to bring the laundry up to the main living area. That would be an improvement in utility and the only reason why I would consider eliminating it. Hard to see everything, but you could reconfigure the doorway/entry and take over that vestibule area.

My parents' home had the simple white hex tiles as well. You may not have enough floor space to get the desired effect from many pattern repeats. Once you get other fixtures in there the floor may all but disappear.

I can empathize and sympathize about the closet turned bathroom issue. Trust me, no one will spend very much time in there!

Thank you. Though I love the look of allover white hex, in the powder room I am trying to pull some of the colors in the art glass into other hard surfaces in the first floor.

I will try to attach photos that show the relationship between the front door which is art glass and the powder room at the end of the hall next to the stairs. I have also included a shot of the front door and the windows in the dining room.There is also a shot of the powder room as it is now with the toilet and sink just resting in place. On the floor are some paper tests for one pattern. In the shot from the hall, the two pipes delineate where the radiator will be.

I can add post some photos tomorrow of other (smaller) patterns we are trying. There actually is a fair amount of floor visible, just not around the edges. The pattern will also be visible from the foyer. Pardon the poor quality of the cel phone shots. I always like seeing visuals, so I thought this might help. I hope my first attempt importing from photobucket is successful.

Here are photos of three more test patterns printed on computer paper. There are three variations - the pattern on the left shows 8 medallions; the middle and right patterns each show 3 repetitions . It would be one of the three repeated, not all three. The spacing could be farther apart. One photo shows a bit of my dog hiding from the storm. She does not seem to have an opinion on the patterns but approves of the small size of the room. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
