Football Food

A number of years ago, some neighbors and us, used to get together every Sunday for yummy food and football. The neighbor and I used to trade off weeks cooking. She was a foodie. So it got to be a little bit of a challenge to "out do" each other. Our neighbors moved away so we haven't done this in quite some time. DH decided that he wanted to start up this tradition again with some friends. I think this is great but.....

I'm drawing a blank for menu(s)!

1. Lasagna, homemade bread, salad & cookies?

2. Homemade pizza?

What else? I'd great appreciate your suggestions!

We like chili & lots of bowls filled with different toppings served with cornbread. Sometimes, we have quesadillas along with the chili. Ginger cookies with a bit of cayenne pepper is a good dessert.

Big pot of vegetable soup...or minestroni. Chicken and noodles.
Put a turkey into the oven, carve it up and have the makings for hot turkey sandwiches. We used to do that for a real parking lot tail gate. just pack the whole roaster and buns and cut it up after you get there.
Same thing with a whole pork loin....have buns, slice the meat and have hot turkey sandwiches....beans and slaw on the side!
It can all be made pretty easy and informal.....and delicious and fun!

This recipe for Cowboy Caviar was made at one of our company pot luck parties, and I've made it for many other parties. Everyone asks for the recipe. The dressing has some sugar in it so it really has a nice hot/sweet taste. It also makes a big bowl! Serve with tortilla chips. COWBOY CAVIAR DRESSING: 1/2 CUP VINEGAR 1/2 CUP SUGAR 1 CUP OIL BRING THE DRESSING INGREDIENTS TO A BOIL AND LET COOL DRAIN AND RINSE ALL THE FOLLOWING CANNED INGREDIENTS FIRST AND PUT IN A BIG BOWL WITH FRESH INGREDIENTS: 1 CAN WHITE CORN (OR GREEN GIANT MEXI-CORN) I USE 2 CANS MEXI CORN 1 CAN PINTO BEANS W/JALAPENOS 1 CAN BLACK-EYED PEAS W/JALAPENOS 1 CAN BLACK BEANS (RINSE THOROUGHLY) 1 EACH GREEN, YELLOW AND RED PEPPERS - CHOPPED FINELY 1 MEDIUM RED ONION - CHOPPED FINELY CILANTRO CHOPPED (TO TASTE - I USE AT LEAST 1/2 CUP 1 FINELY MINCED JALAPENO PEPPER (MORE OR LESS TO TASTE) POUR COOLED DRESSING OVER ALL AND STIR GENTLY WITH A SPATULA REFRIGERATE OVERNIGHT FOR BEST TASTE SERVE WITH CHIPS, ALSO GREAT AS A SALAD

Sue, I could have written your list!! Also, the apple cider that Monica mentioned, root vegetables like parsnips, beets, and so on, chili, homemade soups, dried beans, tiny new potatoes.... We eat a ton of winter squash in the fall. I love to try every size and shape I can find. The old standby for a squash with seed cavity that you can stand upright is to bake it with butter, salt, and pepper in the middle, but I like to experiment with adding other things.. balsamic vinegar, red chili flakes, brown sugar, garlic.. I've also got where I usually cut the top off the squash and pre-cook it in the microwave for 15-18 minutes before moving it to the oven. They don't take all afternoon that way :-) Pumpkin bars and apple deserts are a MUST every fall. And roasted root vegetables... yummmmm.....

Much depends on the weather. Great submarine sandwiches (lots of coldcuts or meatball subs) are always good and easy to eat while watching football. Pizza is likewise. Chili is more of a cold weather food for me. Lasagna/pasta - nothing wrong with that. If you like fighting the mess of bones, wings can be good but more for snacking IMO. Ribs, slaw and potato salad can be a hit. Nothing wrong with roasted turkey or ham either. Brats, dogs, polish... make a sausagepalooza. Want to go more swanky? Steaks. Anything grilled from a roast to a bacon bomb. French dip?

For more on the snacking end, quesadillas, wings as I said, cocktail meatballs/franks. Go state fair style? Corn dogs, fries, corn on the cob - anything on a stick.

Maybe you want to look more toward a theme as a variation? Possibly some history of a team or food popular in the area? Could get real creative that way.
