When he says burnt orange, maybe think terra cotta (vs more peachy/goldy tones).

The terracotta that Lucy suggested would look very nice with the kitchen cabs (better if he gets rid of the blue) there is products now to paint tiles.

You might want to look at BM Wilmington Tan for the LR. If you do a search for it, you'll probably come up with several pictures. A few others that come to mind are SW Latte and SW Blonde. My first thought when I looked at the kitchen was a rust color just because of the color of the cabinets. I'm not sure about the blue with it, but maybe he will be inspired to change the countertops later on. Sorry I can't recommend a color, but I've seen some really pretty deep rust colors. I would just try to make sure it's not a bright rust.

maybe by burnt orange he means copper....EK's bronze might be a great compromise-- it is dark goldish/bronze (yeah, that was redundant). I know what you are saying about his kit cabinets, but to me, in the pictures at least (sometimes things looks so diff in RL) they look like good wood, clean and simple lines-- so you can work with them as they are for now.

I think the challenge here is his color preferences versus what he has that is staying. the sofa looks chocolate or dark taupe/brown. what color is the chair to the right that is staying? it looks blue on my monitor, but he doesn't like blues. what is the accent color in it?

LR- ek bronze type color for walls, with FP bricks painted cream (not set on that-- just first idea that came to me). throwing out ideas here, hoping something inspires you or at least gets you to say, "No way!" that helps me figure out my direction sometimes:-) maybe the fp could be a lighter shade of caramel/bronze in the limestone family. i am assuming you don't want to tile over the brick, because if you do, you might use the tile from the kitchen backsplash (the new/future one).

pillows on sofa and perhaps upholstery for the new chair gong to the left could be in the copper/burnt orange color, maybe with trim the color of the sofa.

color choices he picked look camel to me...camel and caramel. that works with the sofa and with "burnt orange", so that's good.

kitchen: replace the hardware on the cabinets to an oil rubbed bronze. change backsplash and counters when you can (you can paint tile? wow-- that is an idea). the kitchen is a place where the terracotta/orange could work as wall color, picking up accent in LR....but only if you can change the tiles. though i have seen orange and blue done nicely together-- it is usually a more modern look or classic french terracotta and sky blue (like in "Marie Antoinette"-- not a look you son seems to be going for!).

if you do paint the cabinets, then the countertops could be black soapstone or something like that- not a polished, sleek look...more of a homey sheen (or laminate that mimics that look). the floor could then be limestone/camel tile (more affordable and more practical to use the tiles that look like limestone but aren't), possibly with inserts of black. backsplash could be 4x4 tiles of limestone color.

are you still there? i feel like i just gave you a million chores....so easy to write and yet so time consuming to actually implement. you seem to be at the beginning stage of the project-- the concepting stage. always the most over-whelming and fun at the same time!

even though i just threw out a dozen ideas, if it were my project, i would pick out the thing that will make the most impact and do that first. it can be a long-range plan. paint color in the lr and kitchen will be a huge step forward.

he is lucky to have such a generous mom who is so talented as well! i am sure whatever you do it will be appreciated and bring the rooms together in a great way.

I was going to suggest the burnt orange for the kitchen, but since that's already suggested, I'll go drastic (and low cost) and say -- black walls, new valance and chunky stainless knobs. my beginner painting ....

His first inspiration pic, was MY first inspiration pic, so I already felt sympatico. When you said he wanted "burnt orange" that cinched it, LOL. You could maybe keep the slipcover (find a bigger chair, LOL), since that is considered a neutral.

I think I already told you, my walls are close to the color of the sofa in that first pic. My paint is Dutch Boy "Giant Sequoia" that I had darkened a little, looks better with my stained wood beams. IMO not a great brand of paint, but you get the idea. It is a very warm and friendly room.

I have all neutral colors and lots of texture: baskets, antlers, pottery, plants, brown leather chair. At my own (7 yro!)son's suggestion, I am adding more silver and some navy blue to liven things up. I'm looking for some throw pillows and maybe a small area rug, took inspiration from these at PB.

Some navy would tie in the blue in your son's kitchen tiles too, make them look more deliberate. Is there any way to lose the wood panel on the DW, change it to black? That would be an instant update, along with some new brushed silver or chrome hardware and a few navy accesories, nudge it out of the eighties. I know renovating a kitchen can get very expensive, but a few small changes could really brighten it up, like a new striped valance in orange, blue and white.

A simple panel curtain at the LR windows would soften it up a bit, a more subtle stripe this time would be perfect for tying in the olive green/brown/orange.

LMK what your thoughts are, if you want to go in another direction.

I decided not to repaint for now, we are not planning to move any time soon. But if we were, I would use a camel-tan color, like SW Lanyard. With our red DR, I think that would "neutralize" the space.

What are those cabinets in the kitchen made out of? Looks like natural cherry to me - do not paint those! They look in good condition to me and much more a man's house than fussy white.

Based on his sofa color and carpet being more brown/light taupe, I'd go with SW Nomadic Desert or Latte for the FR.

Or, do a nice green like BM Olive Branch. I'd paint the fireplace a cream color - not white as that would be stark against the wood trim.

I just spoke with my son on the phone and told him if he wants red-rust-terracotta he should put it in pillows, throws, vases and artwork and leave the walls a good warm neutral so that repainting wouldn't be necessary for resale. He agreed. But he said he wants a warm gold/tan with red undertones. I hope I can translate that.

No, haha, no Texas Longhorns here. I hate the blue tile in his kitchen. I hate his vinyl kitch/DR floor which is very beat up by the PO and bumpy as well. He hates it too. I just need to get him talked into doing the work and expense to replace that floor and the countertop and he's balking. Men! It's my fantasy that if I can start making the place look really nice with b-day and Christmas presents to him, he'll realize some of the bad stuff needs to be replaced.

I looked at BM Wilmington Tan at "my perfect color" and though it was just a wee swatch, it looks very good -- thanks! I looked for the other two and they weren't there. Then I looked at the browns/taupes thread in the gallery and I did see the Blonde, but that looks too light. I didn't find the Latte at all.

I'm thinking kind of a medium color, nothing too dark as the sky is dark here so much, but not too light either. He needs a change, something warm. Yeah, he can live with the cabs for now. It's mainly the tile and the floor that stink, IMO.

The loveseat is chocolate brown. The chair is aqua but is worn out and needs slip covered. He likes green, but that might also be a good place to give him the rust he likes.

I looked in the EK thread and Bronze was mentioned, but not pictured. Can you find a pic to share?

I like the idea of the FP being a shade or two lighter than the wall... but would like it even better if he'd build a surround (fat chance, I'll prob have to buy him one from CL).

Yes to burnt orange pillows on sofa. Yes to caramel colored paint. I should take a bag of Kraft caramels to the paint store and go just a wee bit lighter. :)

You can paint tile yes, but I've read it's a bad idea if the tile gets lots of use, or lots of water. I like terracotta in kitchens -- but other than his backsplash wall I'm not sure where to put it other than on only his oven wall, unless I change colors in the DR corner. The door pictured in his DR is on the same wall as his kitchen sink. I like your ideas for his kitchen very much. Yes, darker handles would look better.

I agree with you wholeheartedly on the thing that would make the biggest impact, and my budget is limited, which is why I'm donating labor. That's why I think paint is the place to start for him (though normally I would pick paint after other things). Thanks for your kind words.

Thanks for the photoshopping. I just don't think he would go for black on the kitch walls, and as I said there's a cutoff problem as all that space is so open. I SO wish he'd redo his counter and floor. I like that you darkened his cab hardware.

When he said he doesn't want to redo his counters, I figured I'd do his scheme in blue and gold. Then he said he's tired of blue. Augh!! I've been trying to get him to do something for a couple of years and it sure hasn't been easy.

I agree he could use a better topper at his kitch sink and on his door to his deck there in the DR. He also desperately could use LR drapes. If painting the walls gets him going I will be very pleased. I can't afford to do all I'd like; he's going to have to loosen up his purse strings.

Thanks about the cabs. I do tend to decorate feminine and keep reminding myself he's a bachelor. I don't know what the cab wood is. But it's a ton of work painting cabs anyway so if I can do a workaround that's good.

I think green would work too, because of his carpet. But he's requesting something else. He says "do what you want" and then when I make a suggestion he says no. Very frustrating!

The Wilmington Tan is a beautiful golden tan, but seems not to have any terracotta tint to it at all.

Okay, I did some paintshop mockups on it. My son and I agreed we like the first pic (#2) best, and don't like #7 at all. But the green goes best with the carpet. He wants warm color on the walls, but the carpet is cold and has too much grey and he doesn't want to replace it. What to do?

I'm going to run into the same problem in my LR because my carpet is almost identical to his and I hate it. So this problem really bothers me. Would you go with one of the warm colors and then try to find a rug to bring it all together? Help, I'm stuck.

You know, something struck me as I read through this post and others... we're all so fixated about resale that we're afraid to ever express ourselves and just put in whatever colors we really like, however strong they may be - we might as well be renting! After all, walls can be repainted in future, and accessories replaced, but when do we ever get to really just enjoy what makes us feel good, even if it seems wild and crazy? I'm NOT saying this room is an example of what I'm talking about any more than others here, it just happen to strike me at the time (as it has on many others in the past actually). Our places don't have to be showrooms - we live there - and we should allow ourselves to be ourselves sometimes.

Oceanna, in my laundry room photo album I just added a photo of my bedroom. The colors are BM, and we ended up with an accent color also on the left wall behind the bed that you can't see. The only decent shot I have of that is the agents photo The colors look like they would go with the rug and as you see, you can bring green into it too. The dresser in the 1st pic is the trim color and might work for the fireplace, although I hate the thought of painting brick. Seems easier to put a surround. I'd also paint the trim on that window.

The kitchen isn't bad. I might think to play up the grayish tile, or the off white one. Me, being the cheap skate that I am, would not put money into paint if it's possible he's going to replace the counters. Hard to tell how large the kitchen is, but new counters shouldn't be that expensive. Can you do some of the work himself?

If you think he's keeping the counters for a year or so, does he have extras you can take to the store with you? It's the easiest way to pick paint. You also might think to go to the Depot and/or Lowes and start grabbing chips. Depot IIRC has versions of our bedroom, which would be way cheaper then buying BM. Behr paint IMO is decent paint and I didn't find the BM to be much different then it to warrant the price.

I might have a green swatch that goes with the blue / gray in the kitchen. I used it in our kitchen & master bath. Our floor is a white tile with blue, gray & green in it.

Lucy, you certainly have a point. I fixed my last house up to please me, which included sanding the texture off walls and putting up a lot of wallpaper. I resold it about three years ago and it took me almost three months of daily work to get my personality out of that house and make it look new. So I do think about resale after that kind of punishment, you betcha.

I know he says he's tired of blue but I have to say that blue is still the best choice. Maybe he hasn't seen the right one. Show him one of those blue/brown combinations that are everywhere right now. It's manly, it goes with the couch, the tile and the gray carpet. A grayish blue.
I'm not a blue person either but I think it's your best bet. Change hardware in kitchen to steel and paint FP bricks a chocolate brown. Maybe you can even do an accent wall in a brown or tan. Then find coordinating pillows. Slipcover chair in navy or tan. I think he's just tired of the country blue tiles but since he's not changing them then make them work. You're a great Mom!

oh, oceanna....the dreaded taupe carpet. i feel the pain. i think we've all had this color carpet, right? but it does not take well to warmer colors...so true.

i was thinking about this last night and must ditto mlraff's chocolate and grey blue thing, unless you can mitigate the impact of the carpet (which i hope you can). carpet tiles? a big rug? the colors he likes are just so warm and also i found a thread about how there is formica soapstone now, and i was so excited for this kitchen!

if you do go brown/aqua/or grey blue, you could still do the kitchen thusly: steel grey walls, black soapstone-looking formica, new hardware (i am not a big fan of chrome on medium stained wood, but that's just me) -=- the oil rubbed bronze would actually pick up the chocolate tones, so that would be nice. and if this is the color scheme you go with, you COULD eventually zar (gel glaze/stain) the cabinets a darker, richer color.

i had that taupe carpet in a house a few years ago. i defied it at every turn; my colors were champagne and chocolate and a bit of merlot in that room. maybe because i used chocolate trim on the champagne stuff (well, no- they all have pink undertones) -- anyway, the champagne had warmer tones to it, goldish tones, but didn't clash with the carpet somehow.

or maybe i just willed it that way.:-)

Oceana, how about BM Powell Buff on the walls in the LR, and do the trim and FP in BM Palace White.

In the day, it will definitely look warm and light, and won't clash with the carpet, rather it would look complimentary, and at night, with incandescent light, it ought to look really warm and homey.

Also, in the kitchen, I wouldn't paint the cabinets, but I would paint the walls Georgian or Guilford Green, take down the tiles and replace them with something neutral and butch up the place a little (lose the lace, Oceanna!).

If you both hated #7, I think it wouldn't do to keep going in the direction of oranges or rusts. I think you're right, navy or indigo would be a good accent color with orange, but not so good with brown, unless a lot more white is used.

I was j/k (just kidding) about his Dad's chair, trying to save you time. If you got a bigger chair you wouldn't have to sew or pin the cover, LOL. Actually, my brother has a pair of similar chairs, in almost same color, and they're very comfortable. The aqua color would also go nicely with the right teal, and the brown sofa could have teal, aqua and (maybe), one gold pillows.

I like greens with your son's sofa, cabinets, and the exsisting carpet. Add punches of orange/terracotta in pillows and artwork.

It's interesting that everyone is saying that. The cabs are very cheap stuff, I dunno what it is but he's had to re-glue some areas where veneer was lifting. He doesn't like them. But I think/hope that when I get the kitchen done he'll like them more.

Okay, here's what I did. I stayed up half the night doing this mockup for him. I did a few versions and wall colors, and this is the exact one he chose. Oh, I also borrowed Laruaa's pretty new drapes for this mockup...

I told him we could use a rug something like this with it if there were any problem with the carpet:

So with his "yeah I like it (and a smiley face)" -- which most of you may know is a HUGE nod of approval off most guys -- I went to Lowe's (closest) and got Valspar Woodlawn Lewis Gold, which was the closest I could find to my mockup. Goofy name, huh?

Then I went over to his house and worked my tail off for about four hours (and came home and took a pain killer). I have the job about half done... well really only about 1/4 done because darn it, it's going to need two coats.

My response? I love it! Wow, the room is coming alive. Everything in the room is looking so much better. It's so warm, so inviting. I was disappointed it's going to need two coats (should have gotten Behr), but am hoping it won't need three coats. At the time he walked through the door home from work I was feeling really great about it.

The really good thing is I know it doesn't look great in the photo, but IRL it looks fine with his carpet, I think. That was a nice surprise. The FP will need work, but no biggie right now.

His response? He said he liked it and I could tell he does, but something wasn't quite right. I dug a little and he admitted he thought it was kind of dark. I reminded him that he was seeing it at night and it should look lighter in the day. He also didn't like how un-glossy it is. He said he didn't want flat so I got eggshell. I think semi-gloss so often looks cheesy and plastic.

Anyway, I'm a little disappointed and still with a mountain of work in front of me. I hope it will grow on him. I don't think he dislikes it. But it's a big change, so maybe it's going to take some getting used to. I told him he'd like it better as we accessorized around it. Of course, he is welcome to re-paint it a little lighter and glossier if he wants.

Then he said something that surprised me since I've been trying unsuccessfully to get him to decorate for about three years now... he said that I could go ahead and buy things for it to the tune of no more than $100 (his money) a month. Shock! I'm hoping I can get him into realizing that he'll like his home a lot better if he gets it decorated up a bit. Ya think? That hope is looking better right now than it has in a long time, at least.

I'm not sure if I can get back there tomorrow as I have PT. And Thursday is his b-day so I'll be spending the evening there. I can only take off away from my critters for a few hours, so probably can't paint Thursday. It may be Friday till I get back to it. I'm very eager to see it completed.

I did put just a wee touch of it up in his kitchen, kind of cleaning off my brush, and I can't say yet what it will do for the cabs but it looked good next to his blue tile.

You know men... these things can come in stages with the reluctant ones. Yes?

I think that he has "sticker shock" and the paint color will grow on him, especially once you add your special finishing touches......What a good mom you are! :)

I like it. I also like egg-shell and think it is glossy enough. If you are going to do trim or a door, you can gloss that up a little. I never use anything over egg-shell on the walls as it is too glossy.

I also think he'll be fine once he lives with it. Hard to get used to change.

The mockup looks great. I can't wait to see the finished room! I love lauraa's curtains and I've been thinking that I'd love to decorate one of my rooms in those colors. I just love the golds and reds. Where did you find that rug?

I know what you mean. It's hard to visualize it right now I think. I wish I could go faster on it but I can't because of other constraints, so it's just going to take a few days to get the walls done. Then it will take a while to get the rest put together. We see this on HGTV all the time, where in the middle people are scared and doubtful and when it's all done they love it. I wish I had a big crew and could get it all done in a day or two like on TV - lol.

Thank you! Oh gosh, where I found the rug? I googled "red rug" and hit "images" and scrolled through till I saw it. He's not going to part with a bunch of money to decorate and I don't have much to spend on him which is why I'm using my labor to make the gift better; I think his rug will probably come off CL. I love those curtains too!

I had mentioned earlier that there was paint for tile but I didn't know what it was. I was just watching Design Remix on tv and they painted a tile fireplace. First they sanded the tile and then they used epoxy paint.
However I don't know if this would stand up to kitchen use.

Country Curtains probably sells similar draperies. I love the pillows too, don't forget the touch of blue in them, that ties in so well with the floral chair and floor lamp.

I think the floral painting is the right scale, but too feminine. He really needs one of those paintings with the lights showing through, like one of the Champs Elysee.

And a tasteful leopard print rug. I know where you can get one for his B-day. ;0))

oceanna: How sweet you are to paint his room. I think he'll like the "beer" colored walls. It took me a few days too after I put up the Wilmington Tan to get used to it; but you know, it really complements my pictures, frames, art I put on the walls. I just need to put more up there. I agree with the camp not to paint the cabinets, but to put on different hardware. I'd do something about the tile counters, though--perhaps reglaze/paint would work best on his budget.

your mock up is gorgeous! i am so happy you went with the colors he wanted instead of catering to that rug. i guess i was trying to say that when i suggested i had willed my taupe rug into participating:-) then, this am, i had another thought-- you know, real limestone is both warm golds and cool greys-- basically, taupe. so why can't you pick up on the warmer colors in the carpet, as if it were stone?

everything does not have to match....and i think this proves that once again. spirit over rules....

you are a wonderful mom and i laughed so hard as you described his reluctance. i have a male friend whose home i help decorate and i have gotten used to hearing "um....okay, but is it going to be too much x?" i too sold him on a paint color by calling it whiskey and tabacco, alternatively. never thought to call it beer, though-- brilliant!

i love the curtains and colors in your mock up. it's everything he said he wanted. he'll get used to the paint color; it's just new and i've noticed that men have a rally tough time visualizing color and accepting change. lastly, i've noticed that men like lace curtains. very, very strange. and same man will start twitching if you mention floral prints or animal prints. where's the taste?:-)

oceanna - do you have any pics yet. I am looking for a Lowes goldish/cream color for the walls in my BR and can't wait to see the pics.

I loved the mockups and the color scheme. I think it will look great and that it is a wonderful gift that you are giving your son.

oceanna, my son (much younger, still living at home in h.s.) likes those green/brown/gold tones, too. We did gold walls (a porter color) and a sort of monochromatic bone and green ikat fabric. It is reversable and we used the green on bone for the window treatment and tailored bedskirt, and the other side, bone on green, for the blanket cover and upholstered chair. It is difficult to find a "hip," more masculine fabric without going to a plaid:

The dresser is an old English pine antique and most of his furniture is that brown color. The bath beyond is papered in a sepia-toned print.

Kswl, I dunno what made you bring this old thread back up but I really love what you did for your son here. What is that paint color, can you recall? I dunno if you saw my later thread on my son's decor, but he got a little enthusiastic about color and made his place a bit... er... loud. lol So now we need to correct that.

oceanna, I somehow came across this looking for something else and did not notice the date---sorry! I'm new to this forum and haven't quite mastered the mechanics of it.

I was mistaken, this is a glidden paint. I found the can downstairs and the painters have put a Behr top on it, but I believe the color was Yarborough Yellow. We might have darkened it just a tad. This was two years ago. I finally got the soft furnishings made over the past year.
