I've never seen anything quite like this. I presume it is used in the kitchen, but fot what?

Sorry, don't have a clue but curiious to learn what it's for!?! I'm thinking it is for cooking. Does that half-lid come off? Is it curved naturally or does it look like it's bent? Looks "old"!?!

I do a lot of one pot dishes, meat and potatoes, stroganof, bean soup with ham, spagetti, etc., then after working to make lovely (and very high calorie food) I grind it all up in a food processor. No matter what the food, it always appears to be something gray with butter in the end (or red if it's spagetti). So I wanted lots of counter space for prep, a huge range to cook in and on, and somewhere to keep the food processor busy while grinding and cooking. Then I package it all up in 6oz packages and freeze it. This is all for DS...I don't normally cook our family meals (DH is a fabulous cook). I never envisioned myself grinding and freezing food LOL if anyone knew I'd lose my "Amatuer chef of the year" award from the mid 80's...I wonder if I could grind up a cheesecake...heh heh DH does all of the cooking when we entertain and for our family dinners. We planned the kitchen so that he could work efficiently, with a stainless counter run between the main sink and stove. That huge stove, with appropriate hood so he can stirfry, and prep space behind him to work on vegis while meat is happening on the stainless side. On the other side of the island we have a sink, and two counters. They're sort of "my" zone when we entertain, for appetizer prep, salad prep, and landing zones for dishes between courses. Our sink and DW are lined up with the main dish/silver storage, so that some day, when DS becomes useful, he can put away dishes or set the table without being in DH's way. The fridge is between the two zones so that we can both access it easily. So far it flows very well. We made our isles bigger than they were (they were about 29" wide prior) and planned appliances that don't fill the isles when open. Dish and food storage is planned based on when it's used and how, so that they're close to the functions that make sense (ie wine glasses and decanters are close to the dining room door since we tend to use a lot of them during parties). But no matter how well we planned...we couldn't increase the size of the kitchen, so after a dinner party for six...it all looks pretty much like this LOL: I was half way through cleaning up when I took those pics LOL we really do make a mess, and having lots of counters to toss it on between courses was a big deal to us.

dcarch, I've never fried it on the cob, but I've cut it off and sauteed it, and I like it that way. I don't like grilled corn at all, and I don't care for grilled fruit either. Yeah, I know, picky, picky... Truthfully, I can take or leave grilled food in general, which is one of the reasons I don't try harder to grill "correctly". I like corn in things better than corn by itself. I like corn in vegetarian chili, the kernels of corn in cornbread, I like corn pudding and corn casserole and corn chowder. I like raw kernels in chopped vegetable salads. Cooper, however, likes it steamed and buttered. I take it off the cob for him, he finds it difficult to keep the whole ear from rolling around, LOL. " This topic of cause can lead to an endless heated discussion. Still, let me give it a try. What first gave me the reasons to try to find a way that led me to use my method: 1. A frozen 20-lb turkey will take five to six days to thaw in the frig, and there is never room in a freezer to keep a turkey. We all know how much other stuff you have to get for the Thanksgiving dinner in the refrigerator. 2. A turkey from the frig directly to oven, takes too long to cook to reach safe temperature all the way deep inside, and by that time, the meat outside, thatÂs more than half of the turkey, is very overdone, tough and dry. Or worst, the inside meat is still bloody when you are serving to your friends and family. Please understand that I am not recommending to anyone to be unsafe. The many cities I have traveled to outside of this country, including Argentina (meat capital of the world) and recently to Paris, it is not unusual for meats to be sold without refrigeration for the whole day. Pathogens can grow in the refrigerator temperature as well. Generally, it is considered unsafe for temperature to be from 41 to 140 degrees (I think, please check for accuracy). The other important factor is time. Given it enough time, anything can go bad. That why it doesnÂt take long for meats to go bad in a frig. I hate to think what is going on in an uncooked turkey for more than six days in a frig. Here is what I have been doing for more than ten years. Reserve in advance a turkey from the supermarket. Pickup the frozen turkey on Thanksgiving day. Prepare hot water to about 120 degrees. Dump frozen turkey with its plastic bag in hot water, and keep water temperature at about 120 to 130 degrees. I donÂt know if this is absolute correct, I never timed it. Depending on how big and how frozen the turkey is, about an hour later, the whole turkey is completely warmed up ready for seasoning and stuffing. Because the turkey is hot (but not cooked) at this time, it does not take long in the oven for the temperature to reach 165 deep inside without overcooking the outside. Just simple law of thermal dynamics. The entire process gives very little time and opportunity for harmful pathogens to multiply. I advice you not to use my method. It is unorthodox. "Messy cook" - what does this really mean?

I was thinking the same thing as juliekcmo said: I think, in the context of the larger world outside of GW, that "messy cook" = "I cook" (vs I reheat/thaw) It goes farther, however. I wasn't feeling well so went for high convenience, low fuss. I asked the butcher to butterfly the chicken for me (i.e., no chicken bits flying because someone got too happy with his cleaver). I did slice an onion but used pre-peeled baby carrots, peewee potatoes, and yellow cherry sized tomatoes. Put all the veg in a sheet pan with the chicken on top, and--look out for the mess!--dumped a bottle of madras sauce over the chicken. Nope. No spills or splashes, just have to rinse down the sink after rinsing the jar for the recycling (waste of water, not mess). Delicious dinner. Passably homecooked, though not from scratch. No mess. One knife and cutting board to be washed. Dished up out of the pan. Pan went in DW. Some people do that kind of mess free, low prep cooking all the time. When I make a big kettle of spaghetti sauce, it splatters. It gets on the backsplash, and the counters, and the floor. Not a lot of it. But there's some mess what with the bubbling and the stirring and the ladling and the pouring. And for sure there are little tomato drips on the soapstone (and the tile). Like they could care. People complain about cleaning grout, but I can't even get red paint to stain it. Tomato sauce is a breeze. But by the time the containers are cool enough to refrigerate and the counter is revealed, if it were marble, it would have etched freckles at the least, and they'd probably be red ones. Yes, one could put down paper, or even better, a board, to preserve the marble, but what the hay? It's a kitchen counter! It seems silly to have to cover it in order to be able to ladle out spaghetti sauce. There's enough other clean-up to do as well, without obsessively lifting each container and trying to wipe up unseen freckles well enough that they don't become permanent. I do clean as I go, and actually wash the counter (and backsplash and floor (unless the housekeeper is coming in the morning, in which case I just wipe)) after everything's packed up, but, yes, I'm too messy a cook for marble.

OMG LOL. The matching ladles threw me. It is at my local thrift shop. They must have gotten the left overs from an estate because there was a ton of old odd stuff today. I bought a nice set of 6 transferware bread plates for $3 and some other old neat junk for the garden. I just didn't know what to make of this thing with the ladles. Thanks everyone

I think it would make a nice "wall pocket" or fence pocket. You could put dried flowers in it. Or if it was outside, some sort of annual vine. Do you collect other old cooking items? It might make a nice collection for a wall depending on the style of your kitchen. My sister had an arrangement like this in her laundry/mud room in her farmhouse.

LOL....I've stayed away from this one!!
I have a friend who has a new-ish white porcelain pitcher that looks very like a male urinal....I have never said anything...but I am a bit gooned out by seeing it in the kitchen!!LOL!
And I have a lovely white ironstone thunder mug with a lid in my bathroom holding "necessary items". I bought it for maybe $10 because it was labeled "old casserole, small chip under rim"...LOL!
Nothing that once held excrement hanging on my kitchen wall please!!

Looks like a very old fracture bed pan...used to slip under a bedridden or casted person.
The others look like old ladles like we use to use when I was a kid.....at our log cabin on a mining claim. No running water or electricity so we would pump some water into a pail and use the dipper to get a drink of water.

My DH got a real chuckle out of this, pictures and all. I think the "dippers" with the bed pan make an excruciatingly funny combination.

I'm having a hard time wrapping my brain around it being a bed pan, I mean, how did it work? (Although it does look like someone sat on that half lid.) You could use it for a litter box--comes with scoops!!
