Your corn looks good. Did you freeze a bunch this year? For some reason my window of opportunity for decent corn lasted just the blink of an eye. I blinked, so I didn't stock up. Sad summer in that regard.

I've never microwaved corn on the cob, but in general I tend to prefer steamed corn over boiled. Steamed nine minutes to be exact. An asparagus cooker on your smallest burner with less than an inch of water in it is perfect for one or two ears.

Looks like you've found the perfect shaped vessle for your method. Haven't seen those Planters jars in years.

For the microwave I rub corn with butter add salt and pepper and wrap in Saran wrap.Then cook about three minutes. Sometimes takes longer. It's great.

Well you can just throw it on a plate with the husk on for about 5 minutes and it's DONE. That's how I always cook mine anyway. OH 5 minutes is for two ears, so probably check after 3 for one ear. Let sit for a while and then pull off husk and silk. You can google it for more info.

That's a very good method for one ear of corn. It should get the corn cooked very evenly.

I always used to cook corn on the cob in a pot of boiling water. Then, a couple years ago, I read on the CF about a much simpler method, and it works fine: I simply wrap each ear loosely in a paper towel and heat in the microwave for 4 to 5 minutes. The corn is basically steamed inside the paper towel wrapper. After it's cooked, the ends of the paper towel are a good "handle" for removing the corn from the MW. I usually do three ears at a time, as that's all that will fit on the turntable.

Oh, and, before cooking, I rinse the corn, so the water that clings to it creates the steam when it's microwaved. Sure saves a lot of time and water, and it tastes great.

I use Sue's method when MWing the corn. If I'm doing more than one or two ears, I boil it. Clever idea, Lou, and I'll have to try the asparagus steamer method, FOAS.

I took a microwave cooking class when I got my first microwave back in the 70s. Learned a lot of good things in just a short class. One of them was cooking sweet corn. Their recommendation was just put a little butter on it (I imagine you could use water for the moisture) and wrap it in wax paper. Time of course would depend on the power of the microwave, amount of moisture, amount of corn and more variables but IIRC they suggested about 5 min for 2 ears so at that rate, 2-3 min for a single ear would be good for starters.

There's a big controversy about whether you should let plastic wrap touch food in a microwave. I don't see a benefit to it and wax paper would work as well I would think. You just roll it and twist the ends.

It's been a long time since I've had sweet corn (on the cob that is). Hard to find good stuff anymore. All I can usually find is that tasteless bi-color junk and I seldom can get to the stands that sell the local stuff before they close up after selling out.

I use the microwave as well. I rinse the ears, wrap in wax paper and nuke for 5 minutes for 2 ears. Perfectly done.

I have an ancient microwave corn cooker that has deep indentations on the bottom half to hold two ears of corn. I put one or two ears in with about a Tbs. of water in each compartment, cover with its convex lid and cook on high for about 3 minutes for one and 5 minutes for two ears.

I don't know if they still make them but it's the same type of plastic material as the microwave egg poachers.

This is not only good for cooking one ear of corn,
But it is also recycling/repurposing.
Keeping another item out of the land fill,
Better than buying another 'one-purpose' item.

Really why go to any extra trouble when all you need to do is throw the sucker in the microwave, husk and all? I did some investigating and someone(a website) also suggested to peel back the husk, remove all the silks and then pull the husk back over the corn cob. I like this idea as removing the silk isn't too fun when it's hot so you have to allow the corn to cool if you do not first remove the silks.

I don't haul out a big pot unless cooking for a crowd. When I do corn, usually 1-2 ears. I put in glass container, a few TBSP of water, cover with something (wax paper, parchment, paper plate) and nuke for about a minute and a half an ear. Then I let it sit a minute or so before slathering with butter and liberally sprinkling on S&P.

I like mine best uncooked, if it's good, fresh and local corn. It's the simplest preparation method ever, just husk and eat!

Otherwise I just stick it on a plate and microwave for 3 minutes, no liquid, no wrapping, nothing. Salt and pepper after it's cooked, because I'm trying to cut down on the good stuff like butter.

Like Arkansas_girl, I steam mine in the Microwave too. I peel off the husk outer layers, keeping some layers for steaming. Then, rinse it so the husk retain some water for steaming. Put on a plate and set for 5-6 minutes on high.

For me, the silk threads come off easier when they're steamed wet because they stick together. I agree it's hot but I let it sits for a few minutes to cool down.

This is just another way of cooking 1 corn. Nothing is wrong with the way you just showed it though.

I do the same, and I think it's much easier to peel after it's cooked too. I'm going to have to try it raw, though!

Rob, I thought there might be a big difference in taste or texture, but there is not--at least, not to me.

Annie, I love it raw, too, and I usually manage to break off and, er, dispose of a few kernels before cooking it.

Definitely try it raw, I like it in corn and bean salsa and in salads raw too, just cut off the cob!

It's gotta be good corn, though, or you'll need to cook it and cover up the stuff with butter and salt!

Rob, corn is one of the few things I actually like better microwaved than cooked in a pot of water. In fact, it might be the only thing....

I usually cook corn in milk. The sugar in the milk sweetens the corn. You could try filling the remainder of the jar with milk, lid off, and see if that works. Use a big bowl under, in case it boils over.

I suppose I'm picky but because I prefer corn that's not overcooked, I find it's easy for people to overcook corn when it's boiled in water, resulting in soft, mushy, watery corn.

Elery actually cooks corn for 15 minutes in boiling water. It's no wonder he doesn't care for corn!

We cook it with the heat off. Bring a pot of water to the boil. Turn off the heat. Put in the corn, cover the pot and set the timer for 4 minutes.
I guess if I had an electric stove I'd take the pot off the burner, too.

Lou, I've cooked corn for Elery. He really doesn't care for it, go figure. He's the only person I've ever met that doesn't really like fresh corn on the cob.

Not deep fry.

Peel of the hask and silk, in a frying pan with not a lot of butter fry until cooked. Cover the pan and rotate the ears of corn once in a while.

Give it a try.

dcarch, I've never fried it on the cob, but I've cut it off and sauteed it, and I like it that way.

I don't like grilled corn at all, and I don't care for grilled fruit either. Yeah, I know, picky, picky...

Truthfully, I can take or leave grilled food in general, which is one of the reasons I don't try harder to grill "correctly".

I like corn in things better than corn by itself. I like corn in vegetarian chili, the kernels of corn in cornbread, I like corn pudding and corn casserole and corn chowder. I like raw kernels in chopped vegetable salads. Cooper, however, likes it steamed and buttered. I take it off the cob for him, he finds it difficult to keep the whole ear from rolling around, LOL.

Our cat doesn't eat corn by itself but she loves to nibble on the cobs after we have eaten the corn. And it's nothing to do with butter, as we don't use butter on corn. She's just weird :-)
I husk the corn, rinse it and place in a microdish. Cover with plastic wrap and microwave for 4 minutes. Yum. And easy.
