Assisted living and just a microwave-Ideas?

A dear friend of mine was moved into an assisted living studio apartment this week. She can take meals in the dining room, but is not required (that I know of anyway).

She has a small fridge, and a microwave. Last night at the grocery she started to get some fresh corn on the cob. I 'reminded' her she only had a microwave, so she didn't get it...upset at not remembering she had no cookstove or pots and pans.

It got me to thinking...I guess it can indeed be microwaved...can't it? Just cook it in the husk?

She also got some sweet potatoes which were individually wrapped, labeled as microwavable and about twice the price of the other 'loose' ones. I noticed they were smaller potatoes. Are all sweet potatoes microwavable...just best if they are smaller?

She has never been one to buy a lot of preprocessed ready to heat and eat stuff....but instead preferred buying fresh and preparing things.

Any suggestions? I've never lived with 'just a microwave'.

I so want to help her in the not so easy adjustment to being limited cookingwise.

Sue
